More Walmart policy changes?

I had some groceries to get a few days ago, along with needing to restock some 9mm ammo, so I went to Walmart. I have bought lots of ammo at 2 or 3 area Walmarts, and never had any issue. They always treated it like any other product; I could pay for it in sporting goods, or put it in a cart. Not any more. The counter guy said he had to take it up front and I could claim the ammo and pay for it when I got to the check-out. I asked what the deal was because this had never happened before. The guy said "I dunno. I only started 4 days ago."

I was, uh, perturbed, but I had to get a few things, so when I got to the checkout, I again asked what the deal was. I had a manager come over. She said she didn't know about a change in policy, but would check. When she came back she said that all stores should have been taking ammo to the front all along, and now the policy was actually being followed. I told her they could keep their ammo.

I call horse hockey. Anyone else have this experience?

I dont have this problem in IL, and everyone is more strict around here.

Put it in your cart, pay, leave.

It's been a couple months since I have bought any ammo at Wal-Mart, but that will be lame if I have to have them take it up front for me to buy it.

I usually don't purchase my ammunition at Walmart, which is not to say I never do. I picked up ammunition in 2 different calibers this fall and had the same experience both times. I paid for it at the sporting goods counter and placed the tagged bag in my cart. I then completed my shopping and checked out. I can not remember having ammunition walked to the front of any Walmart ever. I have seen them do it with firearms, but never ammo. I think if they started doing that, I would call Walmart headquarters and ask for clarification.

I have had that happen twice, both times over two years ago. It happens when you get a new employee who has temporary custody of the keys to the ammo case but who has NOT yet received training on ammo sales.

I don't think there;s any recent change in policy.

At my local Wal-Mart I always pay for ammo at the Sporting Goods counter and the clerk puts it in a bag and staples the receipt to it. I then shop at my leisure, which usually involves leisurely getting the heck out of there.

I always make the sporting goods counter my last stop. I pay for ammo and everything else there. I avoid any back-up there might be at the regular registers.

Their lawyers are terrified that someone will buy ammunition, then pull out a weapon
-- load it -- and either kill themselves or others in the store.

That today's society will blame the store (and victims sue it) is the problem

That the managers can't figure out that someone who would do such a thing would most
likely just enter the store loaded already is lost on them.

That the managers can't figure out that the perp could/would simply load the gun at
the cash register upon buying the ammunition (then shoot up the place) is also lost on them.

(But then the lawyers probably tell them it's no longer WalMart's ammunition.)

I just bought some ammo at Walmart last week and had no problem.

"Would you like to pay for that here or do you have more shopping to do?"

"Come to think of it, I do have more shopping to do."

"OK, here you go."

"Thanks."

I am convinced that some managers will say anything to get the conversation over with. I would not be surprised if they handle it differently on your next visit. If there is one.

Indeed, thats how it works in Austin.

The walmart I work in requires you to pay for ammo at sporting goods but no escort to the front of the store though...

A few years ago I went to the walmart in Fairfax for some 9mm as it was across from the NRA range. The guy working the counter was...foreign, to be polite.

I got three value packs and his eyes got wide.

"what you need with so much bullets?"

I told him about the range across the street. He then promptly escorted me to the front registers and watched me like a hawk as I was checked out. Eyes were on me as I exited the building too.

If I wasn't in such a hurry to get on the line, a chat with the manager would have been in order.

The couple of Walmarts around here wont let you leave the sporting goods counter without paying.

I usually go there, or one of the other out of the way counters to check out anyway, as you almost always get out quicker, so its not really a big deal.

I know a lot of people complain about Walmart, but they really are hard to beat on most things price wise, and that includes some ammo. I was buying Winchester white box 9mm value packs by the box, for case lot prices without shipping.

I've bought at a Wal-Mart in Missouri a couple times, recently. As usual, paid at the sporting goods counter. No issue.
