Old Ghost is right!

Man, I thought you were so old that you up and died already. Hey, jest all you want, that rifle is the most effective ground killing device I have except for my Rem 700 VS in .308 and a .12 gauge. I see the green eyes fellas, I see em.

This is like a Shampoo commercial!!!!!!!, and so on, and so on.....

Aristo mi amigo............

First off, Thank you for your service to oour country, I am in your debt......

Dudeski, if you WANT it to be a Sniper Rifle.....go fer it.......(:
Call it whatever you want, I have a fair amount of knowledge in the area of the military style bolt's, especially, the USMC M40's, and I am very familiar with the M24 SWS.........
I KNOW what it takes to make one of these rigs.
I have owned four M40's........ done EXTENSIVE research into how, and what it takes to build them.
PERSONALLY know the ONLY guy in the U S builing the rifles even CLOSE to real spec.......and believe me, the PSS series is not close.
Have owned at least a dozen of them, I own several now.
They are good rifles, and I like them.
I know the difference between the rifles, and what it takes to make them fly.
It's not the stock, and it's definitely not a very poor quality SA scope.
Any Fed agency, or LE using these scopes is asking for BIG liability problems, and failures.
This is NOT to say yours will fail, but the likelihood that it will is % wise UP there.
As for you stalking me with your PSS, give me a Rem 700 ADL, and I could do the same thing......does that make IT a Sniper rifle also??.....
If so, like I done saith afore.....I'm GOIN' TA WALLY WORLD.................((:

As a famous movie line goeth, "Enough of theese cheet chat!!!!!".

Sniper .... Where?

Yep, some folks buy or have built an accurate rig, next thang ya knows, they got themselfs a jim dandy "sniper type rifle" which of course makes them "snipers" also.....:(

Next thing there challenging someone to meet them out in the woods... so they can nail them at 800 yards....:)

Now, theres a "dairy queen sniper" if i ever heard one.

Glock.

Matter of fact... G-20 10mm = :). Also Custom Rem 700 in 6mm ack imp, "VARMINT RIFLE", @ .4MOA for the first 400 rounds.... need i say more???

Only accurate rifles are interesting.

Glock????

Aristo,
was that meant for me......Shoe dude??
What, and where did Glock have to do with our debate??
Ya' lost me there big fella.............

By TShoe's definition, then...

A WW1 Warner-Swazey scoped 1903, a WWII Marine 1903A1 w/issued Unertl scope, a 1903A4, a M1C or M1D, A Lee-Enfield No4Mk1(T),an M24, and an M40 are indeed Sniper's rifles, just like they're listed in the Tech Manuals. Nicht Wahr?

That's the point I was trying to make with my 1903A4. The government never called it a varmint or target rifle in their literature and manuals, so why should I? Does owning an original make me a wannabee, too?

Humm, now this is interesting. barrel say Winchester Model 70Sporter Varmint .308 Winchester. 4x16x40MM scope and Harris Bipod

I wonder what the Prairie Poodle town thinks about 165 grains screaming at them at 2700 fps  Or could Winchester have been trying to be low key and could the rifle have another purpose? Well my other intended use is beating myself up trying to get the smallest groups possible. Hence Long Range Target Rifle and I am everyones friend, note the nice wood stock and shiny barrel

I must admit to getting into this thread a bit late...

I have not read all of the previous posts, so forgive me if I am reiterating some things already spoken of.

The PC types like the Secret Service that use snipers call them "Counter Snipers" and their role is "Target Interdiction". They use "Countersniper weapons" or even more PC, "target interdiction devices".

I no longer own or build any sniper weapons.
I now specialize in target interdiction tools. :D

I dont know, I have to agree with Tshoes the word sniper refers to a person in my mind. And I have a couple rifles, the infamous 700 PSS in .308 with action trued and so on. And a Savage 12BVSS in .308 with the action trued and throated sitting in a Choate "Ultimate Sniper" stock with a harris bipod. Both with target optics. I personally like my Savage the best out of the two guns. When someone refers to one of them as a sniper rifle i get a funny feeling. I dont know if its because most of the time the person saying it has no idea what it means to be a sniper, or if i feel like i havent erned the right to own a 'sniper' rifle. In any event, I dont consider either of my rifles 'sniper rifles' and dont even like someone calling them that. And until i become a sniper whether it LEO or military, I think I will just stick with 'precision rifle' or just 'rifle'. Personally I know how the gun shoots I dont really care what other people think, so I have no reason for calling it a sniper rifle or a precision rifle. If someone asks how it shoots, then I'll tell them.

I feel you Tshoes... O yeah, by the way.. what was the comment about the glock.. i guess i didnt understand that.

Later fellas

OK, I too am getting to this post late but I have some things to add. I call my LR rifles that are intended for crawling around in the mud and killing people "countersniper rifles". Mostly built on Win 70's and a few 700's, but all hardened far more than a stock factory rifle. I have only BS'd with a couple of Secret Service guys, but they seemed like decent folks. Better than Feebies, for the most part. The rifle I use at work is a sniper rifle, it's an honest to God USMC M40A1. Me, I don't have a big hangup on the terminology issue, the antis are going to try and take them all any way you call them. It's only a small point to give them. I'd rather not give them anything, but I don't think it will matter in the long run. We(the gun owners) are going to keep getting kicked in the nuts by the anti gun crowd until we either (A.) give up, or (B.) get pissed an oust, by either fire or maneuver, all the anti gun idiots. It's down to voting them out or killing them. Since I have no desire to have the US turn into Yugoslavia, kindly vote them away before the killing becomes neccessary. Semper Fidelis...Ken M

Ken, late to the picnic............

Why don't you tell us how you REALLY feel????.((;
If you are "Working", and using an M40A1 an Honest USMC one, means you must be Military or you got a clone of one(cause their illegal for you to own), then I reckon you must be a qualified Sniper.
Or, have they hung another tag on ya?.
Either way, I agree, I just don't feel when the house is on fire already, it makes a hell of a lot of sense to throw gasoline on it, and expect the flames to subside.
And, as the first post on this thread alludes to.....WE are collectively doing just that.
Terminology,and Semantics be damned.............fwiw

Yeah, I'm not a tactful one. As my buddy said when we were out drinking tonight(I guess this morning too)if you're not stepping on toes, you're not doing your job as an NCO. But yeah, it's genuine USMC issue. 2nd Bn, 24th Marines. Rifle #221379. 1968 vintage receiver, new barrel after Saudi, in 1991. It would be perfectly legal to own one after it's code H'd out of USMC service. None have been that I know of(in serviceable condiditon), but that might change when we get the M40A3's. The old guns are going away since the new guns are all going to be built on new receivers. I suggested that the rifles be given to the CMP for resale, but they might wind up goiing to some 3rd world S**thole under the FMS program. Last thing I want is some foreign scum with my rifle shooting at me or US troops. Our allies, aren't. Semper Fidelis...Ken M

I think this is going around in circles, and oughta get some rest in the circular file. This horse has been supine long enough for the smell to be bothersome! :D

If somebody wants to wade through all this and then POST A NEW IDEA, fine. Start Part Deux.
