May Have To Eat My Words About Savage Axis...

Also a rifle that could be easily rebarreled later if wanted.

Steve, I hate to rain on your parade, but I believe the barrel on the Axis is "Pinned" and is not interchangeable. You need to check on that first.

Jim

Savage Axis rifles should not have a pinned barrel, that is what the barrel nut is for. Any small thread Savage 10/110 barrel should work.

What's the recoil pad like on that Boyd's stock?

Not very good. It is a hard rubber one, and honestly the stock pad on the axis is better. But I knew that going in as this was not my first stock from Boyds'. They do offer an upgrade in the "custom options" to a Pachmayer pad for $30, and if I were ordering it for a harder hitting caliber than .223, I would have added it.

Correct, it should not be pinned, but I do not know as I have not tried to re-barrel an Axis. What I do know, is the stock you choose and/or the barrel will need some modification due to the recoil lug used in the Axis.

The Axis lug is integrated into the stock and is not the standard recoil lug on most Savages. It would not be a deal-breaker and would not be terribly difficult, but it is something you would have to address.

Thanks for all the kind word gentlemen, I also love the Pepper Laminate on a stainless action (also Boyds' Nutmeg on stainless). The real proof will be in the groups that I shoot this weekend, I am expecting good things.

It's a Savage-We are expecting good groups as well for you:D.

Good to see I am not the only Savage fan-boy running around here.

Really, for a $300 gun, it was already shooting good groups. I am just hoping they tighten up even more with a stock that does not bend.

I have 9 Savages now- Soon 10. Will not buy anything else. Went that road years ago. 5 years ago-sold them or traded them all in on Savages. best move I ever made. Savage # 1 Fan Boy right here

I decided to just hang onto mine. I was going to have my gunsmith glass bed the thing anyways I figure i'll just have him fix the inlet problems where needed. Do hope boyds gets the kinks worked out though. Wonder if the sharpshootersupply stock is any better... for the price it ought to be.

Polinese--Please read customer reviews on them, before you order. They Have a F+ rateing by the BBB. I was lied to over and over for 6 months to get mine. Only after I threatened to take them to court did they ship and when I got the $450.00 Dog Tracker Stock it is totally useless. Sits downstairs against the wall now. A firm rememberance to never buy from them again.

I thought you meant boyds haha. I don't plan on buying the sharpshooter one was just wondering if it was any better. I've never even been able to get them to answer the darn phone for anything let alone order from them.

I've got a Boyd's stock on my customized Savage. It's very nice. In interior detail is poor, wood slivers and what-not, recoil pad might as well not exist, but the fit and exterior finish is excellent. Absolute steal at $100. The other one to consider is the EabCo version that comes pillar bedded but it's $65 more IIRC.

I don't know the differences between the typical Savage and the Axis, I wonder if the $85 Jard trigger would work? I have one on my Ruger M77 and it's fantastic.

I'm pretty sure the axis takes its own trigger. I just put the timney in mine and finally see what the hype is about on the timney's. Of course the stock axis trigger isn't great.

They take the same barrels as all the other Savage bolt actions. You may be thinking of the Remington 770, which has the barrel pressed into the action. I don't know of any rifle with a pinned barrel, but they may be out there.

Is this an option you are given when you go to "checkout" on their site, or is it a separate item?

On the page for the model you want, there are the color options that are considered stock, then there is an extra checkbox at the bottom of the color list called "custom options." As soon as you check it, a whole list of options will load whereby you can choose any of the colors Boyds's offers along with checkering, pads, tips, engraving, etc. After making your selections, add it to your cart and the extra charges are included for you to check out.

No problem. Let us know how it turns out if you decide to go down the Axis road and order the stock.

I will report back after I hit the range tomorrow as to how it performs on the new stock.

Well I ordered an Axis stainless in .223 today, should be here in about a week. I will definitely be ordering a Boyd's stock as soon as I get the rifle

I was looking through all the custom options on the Boyd's site and I'm really liking the "applejack" color. It's a red and black two tone and I think it would look great with stainless. Still considering the pepper laminate too

I bought an Axis in 223 to help me slow down on my semi-auto 223 consumption. I found that it is the most accurate out of box rifle I've ever owned. It was to be a cheap plinking rifle but I was so impressed that I put a Timney in it about 3 weeks ago and I put a Boyd's Featherweight Thumbhole on it yesterday. I had to back the trigger down some. It will adjust to a breath which means you won't have a chance to sight in before a round gets off with little permission. In the morning I have to make a tiny bit of room in the new stock for the Timney. I'll let you know how the stock performs by weekends end.
The only thing I can tell you right now with absolute certainty is that there are no photos on the internet that does this beauty any justice.

Jay24bal, it seems everybody is having trouble with the bolt release inletting. All of us on the planet will give you $1 each if you take the action out and point to what is hanging up. I haven't nailed it yet and it's going to be 75 degrees this weekend. I DO NOT want to send this stock back.
Did you say you had a Timney? I do and I have to alow for that. I'm an industrial mechanic and am not afraid to get in there with a drimmel.

3 hours later

It took considerable thought and effort to fit the Timney trigger equipped Savage Axis to the Boyd's Featherweight Thumbhole rifle stock but it is now secure and fully functional. But it took 3 hours to get it right so today I'll finish chores and won't go out into the desert until tomorrow morning. I will take plenty pictures and have a report of sorts.
