May Have To Eat My Words About Savage Axis...

If I could shoot a group like that without a scope on the rifle I would be GOOD. :D

You may have missed the part of my last post that said I was waiting on a scope base. The rifle doesn't come with one and the two-piece bases that fit a 110 will fit the Axis but don't give much flexibility for moving the scope back and forth to get proper eye-relief. That's why I ordered the Weaver multi-slot one-piece for it. $12.59 from opticsplanet.com

Believe me I want to shoot it! :)

My piece of junk Axis

The only change I did to my SS Axis 30-06 was to replace the trigger sear spring with one I purchased from Ace Hardware for about $.75 for a 4 lb trigger. The Piece of Junk has shot 1/2" at 200 yards or 1/4moa. It has also accounted for a nice buck. Piece of junk Axis. I might get another one in .223 Remington. Piece of junk. Love it :D

I bought my son an Axis .308 for Christmas and was pretty impressed with it for being a budget rifle, so I bought myself a .223 for an upcoming prairie dog hunt we are planning. Out of the box I was shooting 2 inch groups at 100 yards with cheap factory fmjs. Switched to some of my reloaded horn addy vmax 55 grain and had all five shots touching each other at 100 yards. I was so impressed that I have ordered a Boyd's featherweight thumb hole stock, a weaver multi slot base and an aftermarket bolt handle on eBay. I think it is well worth putting some money into it, anything that shoots that well would be. Who cares if it only cost $275 new and you put a few hundred more in it. The proof is in the pudding and savage hit a home run with this rifle. I will post pics when I get mine completed. Should get my stock in a couple more weeks, Boyd's has them back ordered right now.

A shooting buddy of mine bought a Axis in 243 and i will have to chime right in with the rest here, its a fine shooter and after reading all the reviews I guess I have just decided that the Axis ( that now comes with a accutrigger for a few dollars more) will be my next rifle, of course the stock will get upgraded to a boyds thumbhole and add a decent scope and I will be good to go.

I bought a new Leupold VX II 3-9x40 scope a couple weeks ago and I ended up moving all my scope around to 5 different rifles. Yesterday I spent 5 hours at the range sighting them in and checking some new hand loads.
Rifles I shot yesterday:
Remington 700 308 long range custom
Remington 700 270 SPS
Remington 783 308 short barrel
Savage Axis 223 w Timney and Boyd's stock
JP/BCM AR 15 223 custom
At 100 yards, every time I shot the rifle less 2 flyers, the Savage just made a muddy cluster all day long.
With the thumb-hole stock and 1 pound trigger pull, the Axis in 223 is the most pleasurable to shoot and most accurate rifle I have ever owned.
BTW, the Leupold ended up on the Savage.

I love how this thread keeps being resurrected. Every one who buys one is always pleasantly surprised at just nice of a rifle it is. And with some aftermarket support, there is no longer a reason to not buy one anymore.

Since this thread originated, I myself have added a second Axis to the safe, this time a .308. Already sitting in a Boyds Prairie Hunter Nutmeg stock. For now, I have a cheap scope on it that was laying around along with 2 piece bases for a 110, but mam saving up to drop another Vortex on a one piece rail from EGW just like the .223. I have not shot it yet as my outdoor rifle range is closed until 3/1, but if she is anything like her sister in .223, I will be very happy.

Yeah, Boyds' will let you (for $25) alter the LOP in 1/4" increments over a pretty good spread of options.

You can also choose a 1/2" pad (standard and included in price) or upgrade (either $25 or $35) to a 1" Pachmyer pad, which I did on the .308 Win.
