Marlin Model 60

This is the exact reason I gave up Marlins and switched to the 10/22

The guy at the gun store was right, should've got the 10/22

I went out and got a Ruger 10/22, never looked back...

+1 on selling and getting a 10/22

And the Winner is....................... you guessed it, you should of got a 10/22.
Of the Marlin 60's I've had the misfortune of being around all ran good outta the box but developed issues after time. After that they're a bear to get back right. On the other hand of all the 10/22's I've been around none have ever failed and the nice thing about them is even if they do a monkey could diagnose and fix the problem.

I purchased this Glenfield Mod 60 new in 1968. Have never experienced an issue or had to replace a part on it. It will probably outlive me. ;)

I wish one of you could have told my 10/22 that. I kept that think spotlessly clean, and well lubricated and it was a stove-piping nightmare with every mag I owned and every brand of ammo I tried.

Traded up for a Model 60 and never looked back. A few thousand rounds later, with regular cleaning, and I cant even remember the last time my '60 jammed. Far more accurate than the 10/22 as well, with a much better trigger.

I own two 1973 10/22s and a 1998 model 60 and I've got 4 times the ammo through the model 60 with no issues as long as I keep it clean. I can't say the same for the 10/22s. Also, the model 60 is much more accurate out of the box and has a better trigger to boot.

Over 95% of FTE's with (New Model 60) Marlins is a problem with the ejector wire being positioned wrong.

This is how it looks when properly positioned.

A lot of folks unknowingly/inadvertantly bend the wire the wrong way when cleaning...so it's pretty common for problems to be wire related.

In fact, it's one of the ways I get Marlins so cheap...idiots sell them to pawn shops, the pawn shop guys test 'em and think they're malfunctioning, and they sell 'em for $50-60...and all I have to do is pull the bolt back & take a look to tell if the wire's set wrong :D

----

Also, avoid Remington Golden Bullet & Thunderbolt ammo.
1. It's the dirtyest-firing ammo I know of.
2. Constant problems with short powder loads & no powder loads.
3. Quite often they forget to put primer in the rim.
4. Inconsistant bullet size. (Mic a 550 box, it's fun...not)
5. Inconsistant bullet seating (sometimes you can pull them out by hand)

That's all the problems I've run across so far.

Remington Golden Bullet AKA "Golden Bullsquish"
Remington Thunderbolts AKA "Thunderduds"

Ammo doesn't earn nasty nicknames across the USA unless it really sucks.

----

Now for Old Model 60's with the two-piece feed throat...there's a kit that Marlin sells which puts a new 1-piece feed throat and a few more parts which totally solves those feed issues. Call Marlin for the kit. It'll cost ya a few bucks, as your old Marlins are out of warranty, but it solves the problem.

The old models have a solid ejector, not a wire, which can occasionally get bent to one side or the other...it should be just INSIDE the feed throat, just like the wire.

----

Great thing about the Marlins...you don't have to dismantle to clean.

You take out the two screws holding the action to the stock...

Then you remove the two clips holding the action guts to the action housing & separate them.

You can clean everything easily without having to break it down any further than that.

Hope this helps some folks!

I wish you had told me that before you traded. I would of bought a Marlin for you and traded in a heartbeat!! :D

For everyones future reference: I will trade any used Marlin 60 I can get my hands for just about any 10/22 you can come up with. So if you have one of those ill shooting, jamomatic Rugers give me a shout and I'll dig up M60 for ya! LOL

Traded my K10/22 for a 1982 Yamaha XS400 Special II, I think I got the better of that deal ;)
fullsize

The seat was included, I just took it off for battery replacement ;)

i bought a Revelation model 120 (model 60 made by marlin for western auto stores) at an auction for $25. i shot about 1000 rounds through it before it really started jamming. i took it apart and it was filthy. i cleaned it and took it to the range today it shot dimes at 25, nickles at 50. awsome guns but when they get dirty they get finicky. the micro groove barrel is awsome for accuracy. my papoose is a sweet lil tack driver as well.

The Marlin 795 (stick mag version of the 60) is the most accurate bone stock .22 rifle I have shot, and I'll bet a good deal of money that there's no more accurate $105 (new) gun available anywhere.

At 50yd, my regular targets are clothespins, the bottoms of 20ga shot cups, and 40rd ammo boxes. The boxes aren't even that fun because you shoot the centers out too fast and they stop swinging.

LukeA i will take you up on that..

i bought a mossberg plinkster at wal-mart couple years ago for less than 100 dollars and that puppy is one of the most accurate .22's ive ever seen. im not sayin your rifle isnt, but i cant imagine one being more accurate than the plinkster. on the downside, its one of the cheapest built rifles i have ever seen. complete garbage, but man, that little dude is a hell of a shooter. i guess there is a reason it was 100 bucks.

I have a 1973 Marlin/Glenfield Mod. 60 and as well as being fun to shoot, it's very dependable. I clean it every now and again and I have no problems with it.

Marlin 60

I have two, both made in 1970...my 4 grandsons love them. They will shoot everything but CCI Stingers!

Marlin 60 jamming

I have owned several Marlin and other 22 semi autos. Jamming usually is caused by ammo. I always use CCI mini mags or Winchester Wildcat 22. Never have jamming issues with these. Also imperative to keep the action cleaned.

thanks for the hint on the extractor spring, just noticed my marlin 60 spring was knocked off to the side on the 1987 marlin 60 that a buddy gave me for free cause it was "worse than a single shot" as he said. Hopefully it works, ill be heading to the range before work to test it out.

i dont have many problems with thunder bolts but "golden bullet" hollow points I get a stovepipe about every 100 rounds or it trys to double feed. this is in a dirty gun when its clean i can run about 300 rounds of anything just fine.

Mine is fairly new (this spring) and it eats Winchester super X hollow points since I havent been able to get my hands on one blessed box of CCI Mini Mags in three years.

My last .22 was a Remington 597 :barf:. Had it for five or six years, never worked right, and then the receiver broke. I have had two or three jams with the M60 but it's basically trouble free and it's a shooter. I went to rimfire central and did the home trigger job they have listed on there to it and it made all the difference in the world.

From my experience with 10/22s they're not that much more reliable than the M60 if at all and they wont shoot as well unless you give them a couple of hundred dollars worth of volquartsen goodies and a big old aftermarket barrel.

just poped off 100rds of rem hp not a single FTF or stovepipe just one dud. I dont know why but every time i pick this damn thing up i have to shoot at least a 100 rounds:D
