Magic Bullets

Good point Rob, and let me put it another way. There's get-a-way guns and there's going-in-guns. The 'get-a-way' gun is something a citizen might use [in public, at home is another issue] to deter an attack or use to keep their heads down while you get-a-way, a .22 will do for this, though personally, I wouldn't go below a .380 (OK, I like my Tomcat, too, for real discrete situations). (Please don't jump n me for being under-gunned, I'm saying this thinking which would I rather be explaing to a judge after an incident - why I was at the mall with my 226 and 4-15 rnd. mags, or just my PPK.) In deference to olpaw & others, I admit I'm playing the percentages/likely scenario, but as a candy-assed suburbanite, I don't go into war zones the way cops do.

OTOH, A LEO neds a 'going-in' gun because some times he/she must act offensively, which to me means at least a 9mm/.40.357/.357 SIG and preferably a .45. And sometimes they get into a protracted situation.

But bottom line, my defensive ammo box at home has a selection of Hydra-shoks, STHPs & SXTs, Gold Dots, Golden Sabres, Cor-bon and Fiocchi. Intellectually, like the design of the HydraShoks, but I'm confident any of them will do the job if I do mine. Regards, M2

Wow, really cool thread. I bet this one wins! To address some issues...
Shot placement. Oh god, yes. LEO vs citizen...agreement on equal eqp, as well as different bullets. Fit your environment. I tend to carry lighter, faster bullets GENERALLY. For survival use- deer and "target rich environment" situations- I bought 500 rounds of Mullins-loaded 155-XTP going *really* fast two years ago. I still have about 300 left. Kodiac, you beat me to mentioning the Mullins tungsten rounds. Since this is, after all, the Magic Bullet thread, Jeff (Mullins) assures me that they HAVE developed the magic bullet. I will update the group when it is available, but Jeff tells me that a .380 should drop a boar...which, by extropolation, means to me that a .45 ACP would be as effective as current .50 AE, with the new bullet. This bullet will be light and fast, and intended to have terminal effects unlike anything previously seen. Stay tuned.

As for "goin' in guns", I believe the Kel-tec Sub-9 is worth a look. Yes, it is a PCC, but it is considerably handier (my opinion) than an AR. It also folds in half for easy storage in the squad car, ready bag, or briefcase.

Oh, yes- Kodiac, you forgot to mention the Mullins tungsten rounds will defeat glass and weigh the same as ordinary defensive ammo...At the risk of making you cry, I walked away from some for-well, it was so low that I won't even tell you-at a gun show. (I was concentrating on tactical priorities: battle rifle and .308.)

Rich, you favor the 10?

Spectre-
The only complaints I have against the 10mm are the lack of platform choices, the fact that I didn't invent it and the development of the 40S&W.

I would *love* to test that theory out on the mullins .380 taking out a boar. It would be great end of coversation when people scoff at the .380.

I'll be in boar rich environment in about 10 days, after the Glocks do their job, if I had some of those "magic" rounds, I could go for it (with a guide on back-up, just to be humane...).

Yah, it's an old thread, but it came up on my search

Anyone used this? ::
It's brand new.
7.92x24 mm cartridge
For 9x19 (G-17, -19, -36) and .45 ACP use. Comes in AP, and
also pre-fragmented, deep-penetrating (12~14" in gelatin).
Armor piercing (Yes, in a hand-gun) for MIL / LEO only

I’m curious if you had opportunity to test the .380 on a wild oinker yet. :-)

I’m a little late to the discussion but here is my 2 cents worth anyway. First I see no problem with studying the issue and forming theories as to what the perfect round might be. The problem I do see is that we sometimes tend to over think it and make changes based on very little real information. I prefer to go with the notion that shot placement trumps all and that any established full power combat handgun and round combination is better then no hand gun at all. Arming ourselves though, begins with a resolve not to be a victim. Not so much with energy transfer charts; interesting as that can be. Training and mindset determines the outcome far more then anything else. Worrying about, big enough, deep enough, not too deep and proper mushroom expansions are simply hair splitters. For me 230g .45 ACP ball is good enough. That’s right ball. That’s what I train with; it always feeds, allows rapid accurate follow up shoots and has a near 100 year track record of ending fights. I just can’t bring myself to worry if it will do the job or not in a civilian self defense scenario. That said I would worry if a .380 is enough. That’s why I’m curious if Rob could bring a piggy down with it.
