Looking for a new Hunting Rifle

I much prefer Ruger bolt-action rifles. Rugged, accurate and reliable-not to mention nice looking if a "classic" appearance is desired.

Theres a guy selling a Winchester model 70 xtr with a synthetic stock and a leupold rifleman 4-12x40 for $500. You guys know anything about this gun. Thanks.

I currently have a Remington 710. I'm looking for a high quality rifle in the $900 range. I was thinking Weatherby or Savage. I'm open to other suggestions other than Remington as their quality seems to have gone down. Thank you.

If you are in Ohio let me know. I have a Remington 700 LSS in 30-06 I'd let you have for $600

Its almost impossible to buy a "bad" rifle these days out of the choices mentioned. I am a Winchester guy and am willing to pay a bit more for a pretty gun. That said, the Savage are not as pretty but are real good shooters. I own them all. If money is no object, then Kimber is the way to go IMO. Buy what gun that speaks to you and feels the best in your hands. It won't hurt if you also like the looks either.

Much as I love my Savage rifles I have to admit that my two Tikka T3s are awesome for hunting. Both have excellent triggers, feed like greased lightning, and have the smoothest barrels I've ever seen. The stainless .308 Winchester I picked up last year doesn't seem to collect jacket fouling at all! The first time I brought it back from the range I thought my bore cleaner wasn't working (Pro-Shot) so I switched to Hoppes #9 - nothing! Only factory barrel I've ever seen that did that. At first I was a little put off by the plastic magazine, but it works great and doesn't scratch the brass.

One thing I'll add, the Tikka T3 Lite does benefit from a Limb Saver Pad!

Nothing wrong with the Savage 16, I liked mine.

If I had to pick a hunting rifle in this price range, it would be a tough choice between a T3 Lite stainless, Savage 16, or a Winchester EW. I probably would go with the Savage now-a-days because I could change it into anything I wanted later on and I own enough hunting rifles.

@FiveInADime,

That's exactly what I did with my Savage 16FLHSS! Would you believe this is the same rifle?

Nice rifle. The bolt is on the wrong side though?

I think my son might be left handed but it's hard to tell. It'll be too bad if he can't use all of my rifles :(

Oh yeah, forgot about the CZ 550.

In that price range ($900), here's the order I'd go in:

--T/C Icon Classic or used Sako 85 (tied)
--new Winchester 70 (preferably the featherweight)
--new Remington 700 or Remington Seven, or Browning A-bolt II or CZ 550 or Ruger 77 (all tied)

--new High-end Savage, like the "Lightweight Hunter" for example, or Tikka T3 (tied)
--new High-end Vanguard or Howa or T/C Venture (tied)
--new Low-end Savage or low-end Howa, or new Vanguard II

You really have no reason to go below the bolded ones, with that budget, even if you step in a bad deal.

I'm leaving out a few, like Steyr, Sauer, & Weatherby Mk V in a used format, but they're probably over $900 anyway, as are the Mauser M12 and M3. Also left off Browning X-bolt and other silliness as all detach-mag turnbolts are in my view.

Wait, scratch the "Used Sako 85" - that's still gonna be over $900; sorry.

Dang, Ridgerunner, that's a beaut of a rig - I sure hope the pre-nup says that you get back all gun gifts, in the event things go south.
