Looking for a new Hunting Rifle

I currently have a Remington 710. I'm looking for a high quality rifle in the $900 range. I was thinking Weatherby or Savage. I'm open to other suggestions other than Remington as their quality seems to have gone down. Thank you.

Weatherby and Savage are certainly good choices. I would give a nod to the Savage just for the availability of aftermarket accessories if nothing else. If your total budget is $900, I will say I'd rather have a $600 scope on a $300 rifle than a $300 scope on a $900 rifle.

I've recently picked up a T3 Tactical and have been impressed with the accuracy and the butter smooth action.

Although I also own Savages and Winchesters, I believed I'd be looking for a T3 Hunter for my next hunting rifle if I were in the market.

If buying a new production rifle Winchester is at the top of my list with Ruger Hawkeye a close #2. $900 will just barely get you into Winchester. It will buy you a Ruger and a scope. If you can afford a bit over $1,000 Kimber is another good option.

Tikka makes a very accurate, but non-traditional rifle, priced at around $600. If you like the modern non-traditional look and features it is a very accurate rifle. Also the lightest rifle you will buy for under $1,000 if that is something you like.

Weatherby makes a good rifle. They are the heaviest rifles made though, almost 2 lbs heavier than the Tikka and about a pound heavier than most of the competition. If you want a heavy recoiling caliber the weight can be a good thing to manage recoil. I wouldn't be interested in one in a standard caliber.

Savage also makes a very accurate gun. They have some features I'm not crazy about but that is more personal preference. If you like them you will get an accurate rifle.

There is nothing Remington makes that I'm the least bit interested in. Quality concerns are probably over stated. There have been some issues, but most are just fine. I just don't like the guns design and feel there are much better options.

Since you want something other than a Remington, you won't go wrong with almost any rifle nowadays. Savage, Winchester, Ruger, Weatherby, Tikka, and T/C make very good rifles in that price range, so choose the one that fits you the best.

As stated above most rifles in your price range are good. The Winchester's I've handled and looked at have really impressed me, although they are priced right at or a little more than what you're looking to spend. I don't think you'll be disappointed with a Weatherby or Savage, their reputations are well deserved in my opinion.

If you can find it, the T/C Icon Classic is it in that price range. But the Winchester 70 after that. Then a Rem 700 probably, tied with Browning A-Bolt, for 3rd place.

The Tikkas are very good, but your budget is allowing something even better.

I'd get a Tikka before a Vanguard 2, but the Vanguards are good... just not quite as nice.

The Venture is a great rifle. I personally would stay away from the Dimension. If I wanted a switch barrel rifle I'd just get a Savage.

i would buy a winchester first the featherwieght and the sporter model can be had at around 800. the ultimate shadow for 650. at your budget you can get a feather weight grade 3. and for like $1050 you can get a winchester super grade.

browning xbolt, and ruger hawkeye would be my number 2 choices

savages are not the best looking rifles but they always shoot. actually the model 14/114 rifles are quite fine and the blue finish is very good.

what caliber are you considering?

Savage Freak

Well Colonel, if I were looking for a 7 mm rem mag in that price range and wanted superior quality, I'd spend my money on a Savage Weather Warrior 116, or try to get a great deal on the Savage Long Range Hunter....

Hands down none of the rifles mentioned before will outshoot those devils ....

When boot hits pavement, those For the money are the best buys.

I just bought a new CZ 557, nice even bluing, well done American style stock with cheek piece,[ walnut, oil rubbed] free floated hammer forged 20.5" barrel - [this is the new CZ bolt action carbine] detachable box magazine with steel floor plate, windage adjustable rear sight and fiber optic front sight adjustable for elevation--comes with sling swivels and a great recoil pad along with a very impressive test target--paid full retail due to Bud's didn't have them yet---I paid just a tad over $800 for it out the door ----not one member even mentioned a CZ---
Ever shot one? They are right up there with the Savages and the Weatherbys for accuracy----

For hunting the Browing A bolt is a great choice. One big reason is the magizine in the floor plate. It's a very good design for a hunting rifle. Walking to and from a stand with the mag in my pocket, after climbing and pulling up the rifle with a string I can snap in the mag and stroke the bolt, ready to hunt!

If you are not averse to buying used, there are good quality Remingtons out there.

I've long maintained that the best value in hunting rifles are used rifles. Hunting calibers very rarely get shot much..... and often only get out of storage once or twice a year. The only thing I'd avoid are guns that might have been used for varmit shooting or competition ..... calibers like .270, 7-08, 30-06, various Savage chamberings ..... probably shot less than a box a year, if that. If they are not rusted out by poor storage practices ..... they are likely in fine shape, as shooters.

With the pressure of modern marketing, folks trade in their pefectly serviceable guns on the Next Big Thing ......
