Looking for a .270

Ruger rifles?

Personally if it wasnt for bad luck there would be none for me in this brand (Ruger)owned 3 at various times, a mini-14,.270 and 25-06. the mini was 20 yrs ago.,gone, threw rds worse than an AK at 100 unacceptable for 223. the .270 gone tried several brands of ammo and the best i could do was 2.5 at 100 yds. could i kill a deer at 100 sure but at say 350 yds not so sure. My last one i still have in 25-06 a new Hawkeye really not any better so far than the .270,much better trigger by far over my 270 of a few yrs ago with the 7 or 8 lb sledge they called a trigger. Im truly not an avid fan of Ruger rifles anymore to say the least. I have had very ,very good rifles in the Weatherby Vanguards,a very fine shooting Howa in 30-06. Savage makes real good shooters for the money and their sleeper is their so-called cheap Stevens 200, butt ugly though. To me a rifle in this day in age should at least do 1.5in or less with factory ammo and they are out there. Ruger builds a very pretty wooden stocked rifle, can they shoot? I dont see many people shooting them at long ranges much, i guess if you get a good one its great?has not been in my stars though. CZ550 American very good also along with Tikkas. The CZ being right at 8lbs though, excellent stand rifle, Tikka better for all day carry, a butt kicker to bear in the larger cals on the shoulder at 6.5 lbs. All rifles are trade offs depends on what you want it to do and what type of game you are after. My next one will be a Tikka, Just to see if they are as good as people say they are? thinking of trading the Hawkeye in on one.

Ruger

Dont believe me on ruger rifles? read a few posts down, the one marked M77/22 hornet Might just be a Ruger barrel, they heat up way to fast in my opinion. Luck of the draw in this brand.

Old mini 14's had a reputation for poor accuracy. Minute of pie plate seems to be the common reports on the old mini although reports on the new ones are much better. The hornet in the other post is not the problem. That guy has something else going wrong. My first thought on his post is a parallax issue with the scope. He has an issue but it is not in the rifle.
As for the accuracy of a rifle, I have been nothing but pleased with my rugers. Too many people read internet forums and then expect every rifle to shoot 0.5 moa with whatever they feed it. Sorry but it doesn't work that way. I have somewhere around a dozen m77 mark ii's & one lonely hawkeye. Are all of them sub-moa guns? No. About half will shoot inside an inch. The rest will shoot right at an inch.
Everybody knows ruger's mkii triggers were pretty bad but the LC6 trigger in the hawkeye rifles is much improved. We live in a lawyer-driven world and they are to blame for the triggers.
Too many people forget that accuracy is in the shooter first & foremost. I have a neighbor w/ a beautiful remington 700 bdl 25-06 that he claimed shot terribly. He asked me to give it a try for a second opinion I guess. Well, that rifle put 3 rounds into the exact same hole at 100 yards with me pressing the bang button. If instead of asking me to shoot it he had posted his experience on here, we'd have another thread about a piece of junk rifle that couldn't hit the broadside of a barn when in fact the shooter was the problem all along.
I always hear of these terrible shooting ruger rifles. Between myself, my dad, my father in law, my brother in law, and a few close friends I have tinkered with and shot over forty ruger m77's. If that many ruger rifles were lemons, I can't help but think I'd have stumbled across one by now.
In the end, buy the rifle you like & learn to shoot the rifle you buy. Take the time to find a load the rifle likes and shoot shoot shoot. Regardless of the brand you snug your cheek up against, spending the time to shoot your rifle will do more good than anything else.

BTW kst8 fan, there's a powercat on my degree hanging in my living room. GO STATE!!!

Sako

Own one in 300 WinMag sweet for sure! Sakos are the real deal, wish the spare mags would come down though in price, cant have everything i guess

Depending on the budget, here is my list in order. It's in order of preference, not price.
#1 Custom Mauser, will all the goodies.
Then
#2 Winchester M-70
#3 CZ fitted with #39 Weaver bases and low Weaver rings. (CZs factory rings are too high)
#4 Ruger
#5 Savage with detatchable magazine
#6 Howa
#7 Mossburg
#8 Marlin X7c
#9 Remington

Thanks for all the replies everyone. Looks like I will be going with a savage. Nothing against the ruger, I just like the look of the savage. If for some reason the savage 114 american doesn't work for me, I have a lot of buddies that would gladly take it off my hands. Does anyone have any expierence with savages customer service? Just wondering how they treat their customers in the case of a problem with the rifle. Now what scope does everyone like the best? Thinking of putting on a Nikon Prostaff 3-9 on the rifle. Any other suggestions?

I have also given up on Remington after being a hardcore fan for most of my life (38 years)....they are circling the drain and its downright disgusting that they are taking Marlin with them.

I just bought a Winchester model 70 in 30-06, the first "new" bolt action I have EVER bought that wasn't a Remington (and I have bought plenty). I have not been home yet to see it for myself (truck driver)...but my buddy checked it out thoroughly right down to running a bore scope through it.

Its well built with no flaws anywhere...

Scopes...I looked through a Nikon ProStaff that is on my buddy's M70 Featherweight 270 WSM...its a 4-12x40...very clear optics. That will likely be the scope that my rifle wears...but I'm also checking out the Vortex and Minox scopes before making any decisions.

Was really close to buying a Remington 700 ADL (wood) in .270, once.

In the end, I simply can't imagine an .270 other than a Winchester Model 70.

Call me an unimaginative person, if you like ---- that's simply where I'm at.

I have a couple of Remington 721's in .270, and have seen several more (as well as an example of the original production .270, a Winchester Model 54!) on the consignment racks of various gun stores (Green Mountain Guns in Denver always seems to have excellent old bolt guns on their consignment racks) for less than 500 bucks..... , and sometimes even have decent glass atop them.....

These guns are nearly always in great shape- they may be 50+ years old, but in hunting calibers, they seldom had more than a box of ammo through them in year, when their owners were actually using them, which many have not for years and years...... they don't let guys take guns to the nursing home, as I understand it......

I love my Ruger #1. It's .270, single shot, falling block action. A very strong receiver, unfailingly accurate, very mild felt recoil, and a pleasure to shoot.

I just returned from the range where I was shooting my Remington 700 SPS Buckmasters .270. I was shooting really nice groups and the range "ace" asked to try it. This guy can shoot better then anyone I've ever seen. He was shooting ONE HOLE (five shot) GROUPS with my new Remington. Over and over. He shot the 1/4" square orange bull out of the corner of one of the targets. The whole group wasn't bigger diameter then a quarter. If anyone says Remington doesn't make good stuff and that their 700's don't shoot anymore I'll strongly beg to differ!! :)

Oh yeah. I put a new Nikon ProStaff 3-9 X 40 on it with the BDC reticle on it. NICE scope for the money. Unbelieveably nice in fact.

I hope you meant of the rifle and not the targets 'cause I didn't have a camera today (or my cell phone). Yes, it was at 100 yards and the ammo was Hornady Custom 130 gr. and Remington 130 gr. CoreLok. The guy also had some of his own .270 handloads he fired but I don't know the loads. The rifle fired super nice groups with all three bullets. After he was done I fired some (CoreLoks) at 200 yards and kept them in a 3" circle at 200 yards (good for me). The 9 power was hard to zero in on the small target bulls I had. Needed a more powerful scope or bigger bull to do better at 200.
