Yes, I was referring the the FCP, and the Vortex glass...
While I like the Rem 700, you've gotta take their $10 plastic stocks and throw them in the trash (or sell it Ebay ) and upgrade outta the box if you're serious about a precision rifle. A quality, bedded stock ( or one with integral bedding blocks) or Accustock is critical. While some like the stock Rem trigger, we didn't care for it and upgraded to a Timney. Again, IMO, getting both a "keeper" quality stock and trigger in the Savage is a big plus.
We have a 700 in a Bell & Carlson stock, and a new Savage with Accutrigger- but it didn't come with the Accustock, so we upgraded to the Choate as well.
The Remington 700 action still dominates the non-custom precision rifle market. They are deserving of the reputation, and because of it's popularity, the availability of custom accessories (stocks, etc.) and gunsmiths that can work on and accurize them has made them a good choice.
But Savage is quickly advancing in this market, and the availability of accessories has improved along with their market share. The 10FCP has quite a following in both the tactical, and precision shooting crowd. Far as Vortex, I purchased a Viper a few months ago and believe they have some of the best glass available for the money.
If you can stretch your budget, my next rifle is going to be a Savage 12 LRP in .260 (also available in other calibers). Comes with a Target Accutrigger, and an HS Precision stock- at a street price of around $900..."Stock" Savage 12's are beating the hell out of custom sticks in National competitions...
Good luck!
