Long range rifle or AR

I would be getting a new one so it would have the accutrigger. Looking at rifles, it doesn't seem to make sense to get an old one. Used ones sell for barely any less than brand new ones.

Timelinex...
Yes, I was referring the the FCP, and the Vortex glass...
While I like the Rem 700, you've gotta take their $10 plastic stocks and throw them in the trash (or sell it Ebay ) and upgrade outta the box if you're serious about a precision rifle. A quality, bedded stock ( or one with integral bedding blocks) or Accustock is critical. While some like the stock Rem trigger, we didn't care for it and upgraded to a Timney. Again, IMO, getting both a "keeper" quality stock and trigger in the Savage is a big plus.

We have a 700 in a Bell & Carlson stock, and a new Savage with Accutrigger- but it didn't come with the Accustock, so we upgraded to the Choate as well.

The Remington 700 action still dominates the non-custom precision rifle market. They are deserving of the reputation, and because of it's popularity, the availability of custom accessories (stocks, etc.) and gunsmiths that can work on and accurize them has made them a good choice.

But Savage is quickly advancing in this market, and the availability of accessories has improved along with their market share. The 10FCP has quite a following in both the tactical, and precision shooting crowd. Far as Vortex, I purchased a Viper a few months ago and believe they have some of the best glass available for the money.

If you can stretch your budget, my next rifle is going to be a Savage 12 LRP in .260 (also available in other calibers). Comes with a Target Accutrigger, and an HS Precision stock- at a street price of around $900..."Stock" Savage 12's are beating the hell out of custom sticks in National competitions...

Good luck!

If your going to get a new Savage with the accutrigger you will likely have an accurate rifle.

There is one concern that I would check out before laying out hard earned cash.

I was reading on Savage Shooters. com a few days ago, and it was pointed out that Savage is using a lot of freebore. They were talking about the 25:06. I think that they may be getting a lot of complaints due to too hot loads. The freebore will keep pressures down, but it's not good for accuracy. Some on that form were taking their gun to a gunsmith and having the barrel set back and re-chambered. That will cost extra.

I think that other companys do the same. The T/C Venture and the Weatherby Vanguard will gurantee 3 shots under MOA at 100 yards with factory ammo. Good handloads will beat that all to hell. Probably 1/2 MAO. Savage does not guarantee any accuracy like that. Those guns that I mentioned are mid $400.

correct me if im wrong but i was under the impression that the 10 series was more accurate than the 12

There is really not much difference in the 10 and 12 series. The 10 series is more along the lines of tactical and hunting and available in most hunting calibers... where as the 12 series is geared more towards the target shooting crowd and is available is the more popular calibers for target/competition shooting.

They are essentially the same gun, but you can get the target accutrigger on the 12's which is adjustable down to around a 6 ounce pull. The 10 has the standard accutrigger which is adjustable down to around 2.5lbs...

Ok, thanks for the info. So I was gonna go with the savage 10-fcp mcmillin but when I looked at the prices they are around 1100. I could have sworn I looked the other day and they were only 100-200 more expensive and at like 850. I guess I was looking at the wrong thing or something. So that makes the FCP-K and easy decision. Looks like the best deal I see online for one is $700 out the door. Is that the best prices they have been, or do deals come around every once in a while. Since I'm not in a hurry, where should I be looking out for a deal?

You will be hard pressed to find a "good" deal on a new Savage. They are popular enough that they don't go on sale much if at all. I think I paid around $689 for my Savage at Cabelas. It came with the Choate Tactical Stock that you see in the pic from the factory.
