Long range rifle or AR

Get 0ne AR lower then three uppers one for each use. A .243 upper for hunting. a long barrel .223 for long distance targets, and a short barrel .22lr for having fun.

AR-10 Uppers aren't compatible with AR-15 lowers i thought? The only one that i know of is the new Colt they released at SHOT.

Get a Daniel Defense, Larue, Noveske, or BCM.

Stag Arms, Armalite, CMMG, and a few others make some nice AR's.

Get one with a 1:7 twist chrome lined barrel (or a stainless one).

Get some Battle sights, or a very basic 4X-6X scope.

Last but not least, attend an Appleseed Shoot....

Maybe i'm misreading it, but it seems your suggesting one lower and several uppers, would the .243 not be considered in the AR-10 class uppers?

Lots of good advice above, I'll add my $.02...

For your budget, I'd stick with a bolt. Remington or newer Savage.
I believe your choice of caliber- .308- is correct for many reasons you cited.

Yes, I'm sure there are AR's - in 6mm uppers- that will meet the criteria for range (1,000) and accuracy, but I doubt you're going to find one in your price range.

As mentioned above, don't skimp on the glass once you get the stick.

So after doing more research I found the savage 10 series. These are extremely accurate rifles correct? The fp-sr series look almost perfect and the barrel is even threaded, so if I want a suppressor/brake/flash suppressor I can always put it on. The one downfall is I would really rather have a detachable mag. I found the precision carbine series has a detachable mag, but shorter barrel and not threaded. Are these good rifles? Is there something like the fp-sr but with a detachable mag.

My Savage 10FCP I bought has a detachable magazine. It also came with the Choate Tactical stock you see here. It wears a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x44mm scope using Leupold Rings and Weaver 1-piece base, and a Harris Bi-Pod. With everything including buying the rifle new, I have just over $1,000 in the whole set up. That includes tax.

You can always have the barrel threaded later to add a brake, flash suppressor or noise suppressor...

that looks like a good option!
I noticed that most come with an accustock and I can find them online for <700 or so. The cheapest one with your stock is a little under 900. Is there a functional difference between the stocks other than looks. I like how your's looks better but not sure if I want to pay 250 dollars just for the look. Is one better than the other?

I have both the AR10 in .308 and the Remington 700 Buckmaster SPS model in 7mm Remington magnum. They are both great shooters with the 2.5-10x42mm Nikon Monarch scope mounted. I bought them both used but they were very lightly used. I really liked the realtree camo job that comes standard on the Rem 700. I like the bull barrel on the DPMS AR10 .308. Which I took on a hunting trip would depend on how much hiking I had to do and whether uphill. The 700 is lighter so I'd probably carry it.

Both are pretty accurate, more so than my ability I'm sure. Ammo is easy to find and not priced like the bullets are gold plated like some of the stuff I see.

If I had to chose only one I'd take the Remington 700 probably in .308 caliber.

Barring finding a smoking deal on a used setup (which is def possible), Precision Shooter's would be exactly my choice for the $$.

Jim, yes the .243, .260, 6.5CM, 7mm-08, and .308 all can be switched out on a single lower for most brands. Some differ such as RRA's LAR they use their own magazines so they have their own lower. The .243, .260, 6.5CM, 7mm-08, and .308 all use the same BCG and bolt face. The only manufacturer to date that i know of with a AR-10 lower that is compatible with a 5.56 upper is Colt, they released it at SHOT this year and it requires Shims to do so. But it would be a useful lower for sure.

If i was looking along the lines of an AR-10 it would be in the direction of KAC, LWRC, POF, and LMT. Most of those are expensive but they're all reputable and very accurate. The one i plan on getting in the future will be KAC, just because i love the M110 package. But the LWRC REPR is also very nice and has a side charging handle.

Whats "precision shooters" ? I couldn't find that brand of rifle. Unless you just meant that type of rifles(accurate rifles)

I think I have decided I am gonna go with the savage 10 series. Now I just have to decide which one. Seems like none of the models "has it all", and its more a pick and choose which advantage/disadvantage you want. I want the features of the FCP-K but it doesn't come with an options for a McMillan stock like the regular FCP

I think he was talking about my name in reference to my post with the pic of my Savage 10FCP a few posts above....

Good thread, very intresting. If you get any of the above mentioned guns you will have to have a good trigger to do the kind of shooting that you desire.

The older Savages don't have the Accutrigger, and they can't be put on older rifles. Some older bolt guns can be adjusted or an after market trigger installed. You will have to figure that in the total cost. Even the AR's have a lousy trigger unless you get a highdollar one, or has one already replaced by the previous owner.

Best of luck, Eagle
