Let's chew on the ATV's a bit.

Lighten up dipper; I don't think it's me you have a problem with

grymster2007---sorry, you're right, I don't have a problem with you.

I have been disturbed a few times while hunting by ATVs---riding through the woods wherever they wanted at all times of the day.
On a few occasions, when I had a chance to speak with them, that's what they said---" it's my right"---well, it really isn't....a right that is, it's a privilege IF it is legal in whatever area your in.
If it is not legal they shouldn't be there period.
When it is legal, at least in the 3 states I have lived in, 95% of the time it is on marked trails only and many can't seem to keep their ATVs on these trails either.
Most of the time the people I see are let's say not in shape, and would not be in the areas I hunt IF they weren't on a ATV.
It might surprise you that I was amongst the majority of hunters in my area on my feelings about ATVs.
While I don't condone it, some hunters didn't just complain, they caused damage to ATVs and trucks and trailers---which I felt was wrong.
I have owned them and they have a place---just not riding by me at 8:00AM when I am on stand or still hunting IMO.

L_Killkenny, I know the feeling man!!:)

To all

I didnt get the feeling that dipper was targeting anyone he was giving his opinion. I fit the fat but not lazy type. I love the stalk style of hunt gonna try out archery next year bad shoulder and all. I have no problem with ppl on atvs just wish they would get to there spot early like i did not race in 3mins till sunup trying to find a spot after you walked in for an hour not to disrupt someone elses day.

dipper,

I ride responsibly and would never ruin a hunter's day merely to exercise my right to public lands. I've seen inconsiderate people with rifles, bows, ATVs, pickup trucks, motorcycles, bicycles, dogs, baby strollers and backpacks. My point is that the land belongs to all of us. Now; if we could just make morons more considerate!:)

ATV's are drastically overused out west here. Lotsa people blasting from one meadow to the next, as if this were a real means of hunting. It is just recently that the USFS has started putting in ATV trails here. As an access method, I applaud it. As a trail to hunt off of your ATV, I hate it.
Mixed feelings for me. I bought a ATV 3yrs ago and have loved it for a variety of reasons. Only a couple of those being able to retrieve my game when snow or other conditions made the LEGAL road impassible to my 4wd.

Had an interesting situation a few years ago. I was on my fave mtn road and got stuck in the snow. While shoveling out, 4 guys came by on their extremely loud snow machines. They were from Co and had come onto the Wyo side due to the snow storm. They very gratiously helped me out. Should have seen their eyes when I made them aware that it was opening day of elk season and they had probably had a few scopes trained on them on the peak road. I think they went down the hill and loaded their machines.

At any rate, they have their place, my father cannot walk due to lung issues and the ATV he finally bought has reopened some territory to him. He also carries a card via the State of Wyo, allowing him to retrieve his game off road w/ it. I also like using mine on roads that although open to my 4wd, I am impacting the enviro less w/ my ATV. Go ahead, call me a tree hugger, I call it treading lightly. I also have a daughter who is a nat'l speech and debate qualifier who drives a Jeep, and I might add is H()&*(& on wheels w/ my ATV. She also won a 1K check for a personal oratory piece she did concerning responsible ATV/4wd usage. This contest was put on by the BLM office where I hunt and staged at one of her State speech meets last yr.
My point: I like to think that there are some people out there who do think about the example we set, think about how we impact the enviro, and still make use of the technologies available to us.
Hopefully solid discourse such as this helps those less responsible to think about their actions.

An ATV has made my brother a better shot. He comes here every year during deer shotgun season. He picked a nice spot towards the back property line where my line and 81yr old neighbors line meets. Every years brother shoots and here comes neighbor just as fast as he can go on quad. Old guy can`t get around so he uses quad. He`s a lonely old guy and if brother shoots deer they`ll usually talk for 2-3 hrs. before brother comes back to house with deer. Although I can understand the frustration ATV`s cause hunters this has become a comical situation and brother knows if he pulls that trigger he better drop deer in its tracks. First thing brother says when he gets here the night before season opens is "wonder if I`ll see my buddy tommorrow?"
