Legality of Openly carrying around a NON handgun (shotgun/rifle)

Some of you guys just dont get it.

NORMAL human beings dont walk down Main street with an uncased rifle or shotgun. Im not talking about the little town of Mayberry but a city where ya might not know who the gun bearer is. I see someone walking downtown Anchorage at 3 am with a rifle...?????

Different when someone is riding on a scooter or bike with a cased rifle, I get those at the shop all the time

A gun is a gun, not a flag to wave saying "lookatmememememememememememe"

We finally found something to agree about. Some of you just don't get it. It doesn't matter if you know the guy or not. If he's not breaking the law, why does the law need to be called? Being a scary person isn't against the law in any state that I'm aware. What are you doing out at 3am? You know there is nothing but no good going on after midnight;)
I agree it's not a flag to wave saying look at me. If people would stop portraying guns as evil and more people could/would carry open maybe that evil scary man stigma would disappear.

Doug please don't mix us yankees in with the pro-criminal Californians or worse the NYC pro-criminals. I live in FL but was born as raised in MI

I apologize DonR101395,
When I use the word Yankee, I don't mean everyone north of the Mason-Dixon line. Many many of y'all are good fine upstanding Americans. Even a lot of midwesterners and upper NY and Penn. folks in the late 1700s and early 1800s refered to Yankees. They were refering to that annoying hypocritical perversion of the old Puritans from New England that spawned around that time that sought to make over the world in their image via force or government control (at the expense of the Constitution). America was to me made as they saw fit. Not traditional Western values or old Christian values as their own forefathers cherished but strange weird religions and fanatical political persuasions that usually involved stamping out the grapes of wrath of traditional America. They see a problem, real or imagined, and it is their job to stamp it out even if it causes more problems than it solves. Here are some modern examples: Ted Kennedy, Geo. W. Bush (he's from Conn. not TX) and Hellary (aka Hillary) Klinton (Clinton).
These are the same kind of people that are typically for gun control (your "Republican" Neo-Conservative might talk a little bit about being pro gun...but that's all it is when it comes right down to it.) Why? Because they are cowards. They see someone else with any kind of independence apart from them or doing something they don't understand then they have to put a stop to it. Their goal is to create their conception of a perfect world such as the world has never seen. (yuppieville) The right of citizens to keep and bear arms is disgusting to the liberal/neo-con because it makes challanges to their edicts easier. They want a culture that breeds soccer moms, yuppies that feminizes the culture. Essentially turning civilization into sheep with the Yankee as the shepherd.

Anyway...I'm doing too much preaching here. But I hope you understand better where I am coming from when I use "yankee" and realize I mean't no offense to you or your kith and kin up in MI:)

BTW, I will be the first to say we have had our troublemaking Scalawags down here in Texas (Lyndon B. Johnson, William Wayne Justice, and Ann "Rubber Face" Richards to name three)

The operative word there is "uncased" which is mostly being conveniently ignored.

I've carried long guns in public, but I always case them rather than doing the "Rifleman Walk" from my car to the house or hotel, or where-ever.

I don't see this as a legality issue, but more of an abnormal behavior issue. And if you need to ask why I think that it's worthwhile to notify the police of abnormal (though perhaps legal) activities involving guns, then I don't see that it would be productive to reply.

why carry a long gun in Texas when you can carry a concealed pistol in the car? If I put it on the seat and throw a towel over it its concealed. A pistol would require less time to put into action than a long gun in a car. Sometimes the "just cause I can" solution is not the best one.

works for me also.

The rationale for carrying a long arm was that some more intensive trouble may come along rather than the typical single mugger wants your dough.

Zombies, rampage Tower shooters, terrorists, bad animals of size, etc.

Is that likely - your call.

About the towel deal - no offense, but if one does that, it is not a good thing. The Miami-FBI shootout demonstrated that a fight might start with some exciting car escapades that lead to said gun flying off to parts unknown.

I know folks who do that - never trained, sigh!

Too true. And to add my own opinion, I see it as an issue of etiquette and courteousness. Just because its legal, doesn't mean you should do it under all circumstances.

Why would one want to make the family uncomfortable two motel rooms down just because one is legally allowed to let everyone see that big bad shotgun? I’m sure that will be translated into a PC attitude or some how coddling the Brady Campaign - but save that BS charge.

It's like flag burning: Yeah - it may be legal - and I’m glad I live in a Free Society that allows such behavior, but you sure look like an ass doing it.

Use a case.
