KelTec .380 Accidental Discharge

There's no way a toddler could pull the trigger on a P3AT. That just doesn't sound right.

He may not be able to pull the trigger, but a 2 year old has enough strength to push on a trigger-trapped gun and cause it to discharge. I am guessing the pistol and hand were not the only things in the pocket.

I carry a revolver in my pocket, nothing else with it. that's how I like it. I don't see how that poses a problem

Double action guns are perfectly safe for pocket carry without holsters.
Never put anything else in that pocket, and use common sense.

I remember my daughter, at about 2 years, grabbing one of my wife's breasts so hard my wife screamed in pain. I strongly advise never underestimating the strength or determination of children.

Could have been another object in the pocket in front of trigger. Child's foot pushes against the gun using the child's weight.

Magish said his son "stuck his hand into his pocket looking for a snack and that the firearm had discharged," Deputy J.R

It's like saying it's perfectly safe to carry a double-action revolver IWB without a holster. The fact of the matter is guns are safer when they are in a holster with the trigger guard covered, period.

I have read that a Kel Tec 32 discharged while a gentleman was pulling his keys out, so Yes, I believe it is possible. Remember, it is double action but it is also " pre-Loaded or pre- Cocked ( which ever term you want to use ), it takes much less pressure than a unassisted double action, and after going thru several 2 yr. old stages, I know they are surprisingly strong. I carry my Kel-Tec in a pocket holster for that very reason, but the world is full of people who learn by sticking their finger into a light socket to see if it is " live ".

I'd say that's plausible. It sounds like he may have been holding the child with the gun in a front jacket pocket,
It was 88 degrees, not exactly jacket weather!

1st the guy is a moron for pocket carrying without a holster. You would think a deputy would know that. 2nd I believe a 2yr old does have the strength especially if he tried to pull the 2yr olds arm out of his pocket. My brother snatched his 2yr old up one time in a resturaunt because he was acting up. His son grabbed the tablecloth as my brother walked away and managed to clear half the table.

I'm uncomfortable with any CCW that isn't in a holster covering the trigger guard. Bumping a sharp corner, catching something...there are too many variables in the world. Covering the trigger is a simple, effective way to make the gun much safer with very little effort or trouble.

How much safer are D/A guns unholstered in pockets than holstered?
How much safer are D/A guns holstered in pockets than unholstered in one?

There, fixed it for you, and the answer is......................A lot!
The trigger is covered preventing it from being actuated by inadvertant pressure from an object outside the pocket. The gun is secured in the proper position for an easy draw. Foreign objects in the pocket are kept out of the workings of the gun much better. In addition to safety,"printing" is much less, and totally nonexistent in many cases. The gun is somewhat padded, and easier on your clothing.
Carrying any gun, regardless of style, or action type unholstered in a pocket makes about as much sense as just tucking it in a wasteband unholstered.

Pocket and waistband carry have been accepted methods of carry for a long time. "Pocket holsters" are a relatively new invention.
Listen guys- guns are dangerous in themselves. If you wear paper-thin pants and have kids or big dogs crawling over your lap I would say a pocket holster might be in order. I'm sure I could grab my P32 through a pair of sweat pants and pull the trigger, but I don't carry it in sweat pants. Even if I did, a discharge would be EXTREMELY unlikely.
Keltec sells a belt clip for unholstered waistband carry.

Now, the Department of Children and Families is investigating, and a woman who was hit by the bullet fragments is sharing her story.

I don't understand why DCF needs to investigate.

Trigger Pull: 5 lbs / 23N
I'd say that's plausible.
What sounds plausible?

I guess if the trigger pull were really five pounds it might be plausible that a 2-year old could make the gun discharge. What strikes me as totally implausible is that a KelTec has a 5-pound trigger pull.

People also used to use mercury to treat VD. Doesn't mean it was a good idea. Same is true for driving cars without seat belts and riding motorcycles without helmets.
