KelTec .380 Accidental Discharge

A deputy the next county over was in a fast food restaurant waiting in line holding his two year old yesterday. He was pocket carrying a Kel Tec .380.
The two year old stuck his hand in his dads pocket "looking for a snack".
The gun discharged ,the bullet hit the floor and fragments slightly injured some folks and the baby.
Can a two year old have enough strength to pull the double action trigger?
Been a long time since my kids were two and I never owned a Kel Tec.

I hope the baby and everyone injured has a speedy recovery.

I own a few KT`s one is the KelTec P3AT .380, I find it hard to believe that a 2 year old pulled the trigger, the deputies story sounds a little fishy, however, if the deputy reached in his pocket and the KelTec .380 hit the floor, they will discharge from being dropped, a co worker of mine dropped his and it landed muzzle down and blew the gun up.

KelTec replaced it free of charge.

I have heard some people say that a KelTec is just as safe as a Glock, this is not true at all.

It didn't drop, there was a bullet hole in his pocket.http://m.firstcoastnews.com/localnews/article?a=15317435&f=1351

As per one of the above posts, I don't believe I could ever be comfortable pocket carrying without a pocket holster

Still I can't fathom how a two year old could manage the double action pull.
Even the deputy reaching for change or something would be enough to pull it seems difficult. Well maybe not ?

Ugh, at least all involved suffered scrapes from bullit fragments at worst and no one needed medical attention.

No holster and something else in that pocket would be my guess. Kid reaches into pocket, that something else is near trigger, pressure on back of pistol, bang.

I pocket carry my P3 in a holster and nothing else goes in that pocket.

I tried to show my son how guns work at 6 yrs old, he cant even dry-fire the sccy or the Taurus revolver. I assume the sccy is similar to the kel-tec and it's a tough pull. at two years old, that kids must be a giant.

In general 2 year olds are dangerous -much more physically able ,smarter, and fearless than parents believe.
One of the S&W people was designing a "safe" handgun and thought he was successful until his little kid grabbed it !!!Anyone know the details ??
One of my own experiences -visited friends who had a 2 year old ."he's asleep but look in anyway" He had climbed out of the crib ,across the room . Got his favorite rocking chair and put in the crib, climbed back into the crib and went to sleep ....All while one of his legs was in a FULL LENGTH CAST !!!

A 2 foot tall toddler reached up 3 feet and stuck his hand down into the pocket of his 6 foot tall father and pulled the trigger. Umm...yeah , right.

At least that's what the father said.

I assumed he was holding the child.
Its hard to glean what actually happened with reporting being what it is.

So a two year old has arms long enough to reach all the way into the front pocket of a person holding him? And, at what ever angle that would be have the strength to fire a DAO hammer fired pistol with the trigger pull weight of a Kel-Tec without the person holding them knowing he was doing it?
I guess anythq is possible, but the story as told sounds a bit improbable.

:(

Standing or being held --- It is hard to believe.

Wouldn't your radar go off in a split second if your child reached in your pocket your pistol was in?

Murphy is everywhere though.

My major doubt is that a two year old has the strength to pull the trigger.

I am definitely questioning how this happened, I would tend to believe the child is being blamed to save face. That being said, there should never be a pistol in your pocket without a holster. They are designed to cover the trigger for a reason. As far as the kid being able to pull the trigger? I believe she/he could. My youngest is 2 years old and I am amazed what she can do and the strength she has. My oldest was no where near as devious, curious, or as strong. I often wonder how she got in to something or how she had the strength to move or lift something. Never underestimate what a toddler can accomplish. I never let my kids go into my pockets or their Mom's purse even when there is no gun present for this exact reason. Also, if the pistol was in his pocket without a holster, maybe there was something else in there too like car keys. It is possible that the trigger was already close to being fully depressed and the kid just gave it the extra pull that it needed. Whatever really happened, I'm sure we'll never know.

Trigger Pull: 5 lbs / 23N

I'd say that's plausible. It sounds like he may have been holding the child with the gun in a front jacket pocket, rather than it being in his jeans. A jacket pocket would be fairly accessible to a toddler being held.

Gun obviously should've been in a proper holster, or at least not 'hot' with the safety off. That's just asking for trouble.

He had been carrying his personal .380-caliber Kel-Tec semiautomatic pistol inside the right front pocket of his pants, when it went off.

Surprised it wasn't worse for the deputy

There seems to be a huge misconception out there regarding pocket pistols not requiring holsters.
It depends.

Does it seem likely that a two-year-old reached in the pocket and had enough strength to pull the trigger all the way to the rear? No. I think skizzums called it right--Dad's trying to place the blame on a target that won't be castigated.

That said, a pocket holster protects the gun and adds a margin of safety. A Desantis is twenty bucks, folks.
