Kelly's Heros

walangkatapat,

For me the difference in quality wasn't why most of my purchased movies are on DVD now. The quality is better with DVD, but a good VCR comes close. The reason that I love the DVD format is the extra things that are thrown in with the movie. There is usually the theatrical trailer(s), a blooper sequence, deleted scenes, sometimes a commentary track that you can play over the movie (usually with the director and an actor or two telling funny stories about the filming of the scenes), documentaries on how the special effects were made, and other things.

Plus you don't have to remember to rewind them (that alone is worth a couple of bucks to me).

Saw this film for the first time on a doublebill with the original "MASH" movie. Despite the wanking of the critics over "MASH", I think "Kelly's Heros" was a better satire of war movies. I've always thought of it as a less pretentious "Catch-22".

One of my favorite scenes is at the very beginning, when Kelly is trying to interest his superior officer to check into the rumor of a gold cache - take a good look at the officer, he has tousled hair and a Yankee accent and is busy stealing a boat to ship back home to sail in Boston Harbor. I've always thought it was a dig at Joe Kennedy.

Carrol O'Connor was obviously a satire of Patton, and so on. But let's face it, Don Rickles stole every scene he was in, especially the bit about making a deal with the tank commander.

A great cast, a great script and jokes that hold up even 25 years later. One of Clint's many gems.

re: the DVD question, the quality is certainly better than VHS (particularly the SOUND) and it really isn't that much more expensive. I got my DVD player on sale from Circuit City for $200. DVD movies are about twice the price of VHS tapes, but they last almost forever, whereas tapes degrade with every playing.

Fed168, I just wanted to get the following answered: So how much better is the movie on DVD rather than VHS? Is DVD worth getting and if so what's a good DVD under $300?

RikWriter and Greg L, thanks for the info.

The movie is great for what I have seen so far. The added bonuses are the extras, like the trailer, interviews and so forth. With the DVD you can slo mo it, skip scenes, and the sound and visual quality is better than a tape IMO. Plus, it is like a CD, awfully hard to wear it out when you keep playing it. As to players, could not provide any info, I have a player on my computer.

Just picked this up on DVD today. Will most likely watch it tomorrow night. I saw it at the 'movin pictures' back when it first came out, but had forgotten how funny it was!

Thanks, folks. :)

As for DVD - the potential picture and sound quality are FAR superior to what VHS can offer. Without going too far OT, here are some baselines -

Bare bones - good under $300 player: Toshiba without onboard DD decoder. Spend a few bucks to get a good quality S-Video cable (assuming your TV / monitor supports S-Video). That little cable alone unlocks much of the superior picture quality (separate chroma and luminence).

Fully fleshed - Calibrated high quality TV, robust AVR supporting Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS and at least 7 speakers.

The beauty of DVD is that as you upgrade your system, the movies just look and sound better and better.

Strayhorn, you have a great point there about Rickles and his:::

"Make a deeeal."
"What kind of deal?"
"A deeal deal; who knows, maybe he's a Republican!"

Great show.

"I've been havin' mother beautiful thoughts about that bridge ever since we got here".

"Easy, Eeaassy... Some of these people have sensitive feelings you know".

"We also have our own ammo, it's full of paint. It makes pretty pictures, scares the hell out of the Germans".

Yup, it's my favorite movie, right up there with the Pink Panther flicks.

Tatters--(is that like a bit raggedy, or like, swate taters and Frensh Frad taters?)

Thanks for the two links about Burning Bridges and the Mike Curb Congregation. I haven't spent a LOT of time on those links, but noted something about Mike Curb being LT Governor of California. Straight business or some kind of in-joke that I don't unnersplain?

Obliged,
