Keep the Rossi or give it the tossy ?

All of this for a gun I paid ZIP for not a dime.

but it can’t be beat for plinking around with and it fits great in my 9 year old boys hand so he loves it and that in itself makes it priceless to me.

And there you have it folks, perspective. cost, and use. So what if its a yugo? It fills a priceless niche. If it were me, I'd give it to my boy and let him shoot it to death while keeping it in the back of my mind to upgrade it in the future for him. Giving it to the offspring does two things (I did this with several guns), first, it will stop you from trading or selling it off in those impulse moments that we occassionally get, and secondly, it gives the youngster a status symbol of sorts which will make him (Whoa!) with his friends. Not to mention possibly encourage his friends to come shooting with him and further the future RKBA and responsibility / safety issue for all involved. Voila'! Good call Dad. :)

Which begs the question...Are we as gun owners conditioned to shun and look down on cheaper guns, thereby failing our posterity in some way? Sure, Cadillacs are nice but Yugos will get you there very efficiently. Maybe you shouldn't let a youngster drive your caddy as his first, value and to be expected damage from the learning process. But who remembers to have a yugo on hand for this very purpose?

Don't forget the pics dad, they'll be priceless later on. Have fun.

My sediments exactly
I made sure it was safe and then let him shoot it he loves it.
But then again anything I have let him shoot he loved. He also likes my friend’s Ruger .357 pistol and rifle, my 9mm His .22 rifle and my .22 pistol. And yeah you hit the nail on the head his friends love to go shooting with us. The only draw back I have seen is that the moment he moved up to a .22 from a bb gun was the moment the bb gun was useless. But his sister still loves to shoot that even though she shoots the .22’s. :)
Kids are easy to please he could care less how much it costs as long as it is safe he loves to shoot it. ;) Just a short update we have shot countless boxes of shells through the Rossi and have not had one problem with it.
Yes I take lots of pics this is him shooting the Neos.

Sorry, all I have for digital is a phone camera low quality. :(

It looks like your boy just got himself his first gun!!!
There's no way you can get rid of it now!!
FWIW, Taurus bought Rossi a few years back.
Taurus USA is the new importer and handles all service.
Despite what several people have said, Taurus CS ain't all that bad!!
They've done alright by me, the couple of times I've had to use it!!

FYI, Taurus now owns Rossi. So if you have any problems, they may fall under Taurus's rather robust warranty program.

Thanx ;) that is very interesting information just in case something ever happens. So will Taurus cover a warranty an a gun they did not manufacture. If so that is service worth squawking about. :)

How many Rossi's have you owned Edward?

If we're playing THAT game, Bullrock, then I should inform you that I've owned FOUR Rossi's in my lifetime--one .357MAG 4", two .38SPL 3", and a .38SPL 2"--all pre-Taurus. Of those four, I've only had one that had ANY problem (the 2"), and that was because I bought it used knowing it needed some work. The previous owner abused it, and I sold it only because I didn't have time to play junior gunsmith. The person I sold it to disassembled it, cleaned out the gunk the first owner built up inside it, and now uses it as his desk gun at home. The other three shot better than I could and never had any mechanical problems. I wish I still had them today(I was younger & dumber & traded them for "something better" that really wasn't... ) .

In fact, now that Taurus is handling QC & warranty, I may start looking around for another one--to KEEP this time. I like the six-shot .357 snub they have, but I do miss the 3" .38's too.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy a Rossi today. They are great values.... :D

I would keep it. It was free and it works keep it! It would make a good evidence room gun. I'll explain- I had a Glock 17 brand new and one of the first back in 1990 or so. I stopped an ATM robbery with it. It went into custody(the gun not me) and when she was released she was all scratched and banged up. During it's stay it was throughly tested and was never the same again. I now carry budget guns while out- not Kimbers,Etc. So next time this happens it will happen to a $200 38 Revolver not my $700 Springfield 45. Guns like yours make good truck, tackle, tool box,Etc. guns. KEEP IT!!!!!!!

I asked the question because many times people post on what they hear, not on personal experience with a particular weapon. :) So I don't know what you mean by THAT game. It was just a question, not even directed to you...

I don't play games, I don't have time. I also don't reply to posts I have no knowledge or experience about... ;) But that's just me...No clones, please

And WHAT do you have against clones?....

;)

Just qualifying my remarks about Rossi to you--since you wanted someone with actual experience. Sorry you got a lemon. However, with Rossi's, I've had nothing but cherries..... :D

Very impressive cloning... I didn't get a lemon, or ask you for actual experience. If you like Rossi's, that's fine!!! I just don't like cheap guns. I always get pretty much what I pay for... :)

Shouldn't be much more to blab about here seeing Rossi only makes 5 handgun models...Or is it 6???

So will Taurus cover a warranty an a gun they did not manufacture.

Only on the guns they import. Not the Interarms guns.

I own a Rossi M720 and in the 'blind taste test' it shoots just as good as my M24.

It went into custody(the gun not me) and when she was released she was all scratched and banged up. During it's stay it was throughly tested and was never the same again.

They took my gun with absolutely no nexus to a crime, just one of those things they do sometimes and kept it three years. Early on, almost immediately in fact, after they took it into custody, I filed a "order to preserve property" with the court. It legally obligates them to return it in the same condition it was in when received if the case is disposed in your favor.

3 yrs later when I called the evidence room, they had no knowledge of the gun ever being there, no record (supposedly). I told the nice lady that I had an order to preserve signed by a judge and they had better locate it and it better not be all rusty. That they had a reasonable expectation to keep the property in same condition when received. She called back the next day to tell me that suddenly they found it (them). Oddly enough, it was in good shape. :)

Never let an officer take your gun into custody without giving you a receipt for it, even if you're arrested. Have them list the weapon receipt with your property list / wallet contents when they book you in. Then immediately file the order to preserve when you're released. If you're convicted of a crime then of course you wont get it back, but if you're not then you have recourse (or your weapon back).

Evidence room

Thanks- if there is a next time I will follow that advice. The sad news is they only had the Glock for two months . Also off topic my old home town a police LT's wife shot and wounded her hairdresser and then killed herself with an evidence room gun. No explanation was ever given and the matter was dropped on how the gun got out.

I think they give em to the guys (or gals if the guys don't want them!)

Here's how I think it went.. :D

Ring
Hello
Officer Smith?
Yes
Remember that 45 you got awhile back?
Uh, yeah.
Well the subject was adjudicated, has his papers in order and is making a fuss about its return. You better bring it back in, sorry.
Ok I'll bring it back in the morning. Dang, actually had his papers in order huh? That don't happen often.

:D

I owned a Rossi 971 .357 Mag. years ago...traded it away....sorry I ever did. It was a fine performer. I just might go lookig to replace it soon....thats how much I liked it !

-Regards

Rossi 971

:) I own a Rossi 971 short barrel with a comp sticking out the front of it. One of the best shooters I have!

As a factory certified S&W armorer, I've had plenty of opportunity
to bench S&W revolvers of all types, and I can tell you, the revolvers
manufactured by Rossi ( on the S&W "pattern") stand up to the fit
and quality of the best revolvers made anywhere. In fact, the ones I've
worked on seem to have come from the factory finished better than many
S&W and Colt revolvers I've worked on. There is, I assure you, not one
thing "cheap" about them. I can't vouch for the post-Taurus period, but if
you have an older Rossi, assuming it's in proper order, you have a fine
and dependable handgun.
