Jury duty?

"If they insist, however, I will make sure they don't consider me fit for duty."

If you show up in court and make it clear that you're trying to get out of jury duty based on attitude alone, the judge will almost certainly make you very unhappy. If you have a valid excuse, state it; otherwise, suck it up and get the job done.

In the area where I was a reporter they had a lot of problems getting people to serve on juries, so the changed the selection criteria.

People, a LOT of people, simply wouldn't register to vote because it meant that they might be called for jury duty.

The new selection criteria used driver's license information.

The amount of pissing, moaning, whining, and outright indignation was just incredible, and extremely disheartening.

One lady actually got up in court and told the judge that she coudn't serve on a jury because she had been watching some soap opera for something like 25 years and couldn't miss an episode or she'd never catch up.

I really thought the judge's head was going to explode.

I was called for jury duty in Washington, DC, on a (surprise) drug case.

When they found out that I was an NRA employee and was a former police beat reporter they the defense immediately dropped a pre-emptory on me.

DasBoot, I think that you wouldn't have to worry about serving on any juries in Somolia right now. Probably can have any gun you want as well - no pesky government to tell you what to do. Maybe you'd like it better there, hmmm?

DasBoot: 1) it is the law. 2) it is your duty as a citizen. Our rule of law is one of the bedrocks of our nation. I am truly disheartened by those who try to shirk this duty.

... and especially through the use of a KKK costume. Seriously, what sad sort of people think this way, even in jest?

Being polite company and all, I'll move on.

1) Another way out of jury duty is if the case involves a child molestation/rape/abuse/abduction/murder/etc. It's ok if you don't have the stomach for graphic images of that kind of stuff, you will be excused with no hard feelings. If that's the kind of case it is you'll be asked up front if you can handle that kind of stuff. If you can, then do cuz most folks can't. The jurors in the Leslie MaHafee/Kristin French case in Ontario Canada had to endure vid's of the girls being tortured, raped, killed. I'm tough as Rambo but there's no way I could've served on that jury having 2 teenage daughters of my own. Truth be told, I don't know how anyone could handle that kind of stuff, but I guess there's at least 12 people out there who are tougher than me.
2) Just for the record (and so I don't get yelled at by the moderators (again)), I neither support nor condemn the idea of "going in with an attitude" just to get off the jury. I know someone who got away with it (he actually had the 'nads to use his bigotry to pull it off) and just thought I'd pass the info along for anyone else. Personally, I don't care what you do, it's none of my business. I'm just passing information along. Never been called myself, would probably go if I was. Then again, I didn't get drafted during the VietNam war either (came close, tho), would've gone if I had been.
Don't be too hard on DasBoot, it's part of the beauty of living in a free country.

bdarin, Personally I would not take any offence to your post, it did set me back a bit at the start but in reading it, it was different than I thought. It would be a hard thing to watch a Video of such things taking place, which is a world of difference between that, and a photograph, which are a lot easier to stomach, don't know how I would deal with it myself, but like you, I have never been called to serve but if called I will do my duty just as I did in1959 when I joined the Navy, and server untill 1967. It's just the right thing to do.

I feel much better now!
So which one of you sterling citizens wants to take my place?
Just PM me and we'll try to set it up.
Listen, it has nothing to do with feeling better or more important than anyone else.
Most of you bitchin' at me for shirking my civic responsibilies probaby would'nt last one week with the work load I'm under so save the "responsibility" crap for someone else!
My "duty" is to provide for and protect my family.
And working 7 days a wk leaves liitle time for other things.
If it's ABSOLUTELY mandatory that I serve, I will.
I should NOT, however, have to suffer any finacial loss.
That's really my only beef.
If it's important enough for me to serve, it should be reflected intheir reimbursing me for my lost days of work.
It's heartening to see how utterly indespensible you all see my input into the justice system.

different States have differerent requirments for jury duty, but its done by law in all cases. When living in Miami, I was called three times, dismissed once, and had to sit through selection twice. I was not selected though.
I take a very dim view of folks that shirk, or try to circumvent their duty to serve though. So many here are very quick to squawk about their "Rights", and just as quick to squawk about any "duties" that are attendant upon those rights.

oh, das boot, in Florida, you are compensated. Depending on the size of the company you work for, your employeer has to pay you. If you are unemployed, the State pays you. Incidential expenses are your own to shoulder. geez.

I've got a lot better things to do than sit in a jury box for several days listening to some lawyer try to get his dirtbag mugger/rapist/junkie/lowlife client back out on the streets!

Really?!? Well if you've got better things to do and don't want to serve, keep your mouth shut and don't gripe about the results.

just don't like the idea of being FORCED to partake in ANYTHING.
Especially if it's gonna cost me money.
They should compensate each person for whatever their full days wages are.
I'm the sole breadwinner at our house.
I work 3 jobs, 7 days a wk so mom can stay home with the baby.

So which one of you sterling citizens wants to take my place?
Just PM me and we'll try to set it up.

I'll fill in for ya, if you take my nephew's place in Bagdad. That way he can come home and get his wife and three kids back up over the poverty level and maybe keep his house.

It's disgusting to me reading the entries by those who are unwilling to serve on a jury. The right to judged by a jury of your peers serves to prevent the government from having all the say in your guilt or innocence. Yes it is a duty and an obligation. I was called for jury duty in my county last year. I was stunned at all the whiney, belly aching, "anyone but me types" that showed up begging to get out of the duty. Let me ask you, are you willing to forfeit YOUR right to trial by jury so you don't "inconvience" others?

1) Go to a national cemetery.

2) Look around.

3) Just keep telling yourself that serving on a jury is *such* a hardship.

"When they found out that I was an NRA employee and was a former police beat reporter they the defense immediately dropped a pre-emptory on me."

They must have my info at the courthouse. I've filled out the forms for 30+ years and I have NEVER had to actually report downtown. Neighbors have had to go every 2 or 3 years for decades, but not me.

Waaah. I'm just another whiner. ;)

I'd like to thank the guys who shirk out from the bottom of my heart, it really gives me the warm fuzzies to know that if I'm ever in front of a jury, it'll be populated by people who weren't smart enough to get out of it. :barf:

Well,Heist, if you're ever in front of a jury, it should be some consolation to know that you weren't smart enough to keep from being caught! :D :p
