It's my birthday and I'm considering a 9mm carbine,,,

Thanks for your input Gentlemen,,,

What I was really wondering was if I had simply missed some candidates,,,
In the price range between the Hi Point and the Beretta.

It looks like the Kel Tec is really the only viable option.

I did look up the Sterling but it's not my style of rifle at all,,,
The side mounted magazine was the deal killer.

So in my price range it's really between the Hi Point and the Kel Tec.

Thanks again for your helpful input,,,
If I decide to get a 9mm carbine for my gift,,,
I'll let you guys know what I got and post some pics of it.

Save up enough to get the Colt 6450 or the Rock River Arms LAR-9.

Think about this - do you want a rifle that you will be happy with for a week or do you want a rifle that you will be happy with & enjoy for 5-10 yrs or more, and will hold resale if you decide to part with it?

Hello Chadio,,,

I want a moderately priced range toy,,,
I have my high quality target and hunting rifles.

In my collection of handguns,,,
I have some of the finest (read expensive) shooters available,,,
But that doesn't make my $239.00 NEOS any less of a fun tin can plinker.

I appreciate where you are coming from,,,
That Colt would be a fine thing to own,,,
But way too expensive for a range toy.

One doesn't need the highest quality simply to have fun. ;)

I owned a Marlin Camp Carbine for maybe 10 or so years. Picked it up at a gun show for around 200.00 just "because". It shot well and functioned well. Put a red dot on it & it proved to be quite accurate with run of the mill FMJ reloads. Got a few S&W 15 rd mags for it and had fun with it plinking, etc. about a month ago, a contractor working at my house bought it for 400.00 cash on the spot. If you can find one on Gunbroker's or other auction site for less than 600.00, buy it.

:)

I was thinking of the Hi-Point as a new toy as well...
The owners of the local range and LGS give them decent marks...

I picked up a good deal on a used CX4 Storm in 9mm. I love this little pop-gun; it is a riot to shoot and way more accurate than I would ever have thought. My only complaints are that it can't fold and it does not have a threaded barrel. It would be nice to have a better trigger (I hear there are nw kits available) but its not too bad.

I've got a 45acp hi-point that I admit I'm a little ashamed to own. Its very ugly, heavy, has a terrible trigger and the safety is in a terrible spot for me. However, it was a low risk venture, and digests all the strange ammo I've fed it. Here is my son shooting a very potent 255gr.SWC that would easily clean a deer or hogs clock.

Its essentially his gun. (I'm a leveraction fan), but for his and my range enjoyment, we've really got a kick out of it. I've been very suprised. I don't think i'd use it for anything besides what i've indicated, but how can you go wrong? Send it back till its right if you're having a problem. We've got 750 rounds plus down range in a couple of months.

My son can hit steel gongs at up to 150 yards with this thing and the very accurate factory sights.

Again, whats the risk?

happy b'day to ya...

well as i was cruising by and reading your thread, i noticed nowhere did anybody ask you your intentions for a use for your b'day gift.

Zombie control? Boar hunting? tweaking it to shoot 100+ yards? or are you like i am when it comes to b'day gifts for yourself...just cuz i want it and can get it?

I was in the same boat of needing a zombie control carbine and after a couple of weeks searching high and low for either the hi-point or kel tec sub 2k...my small local hole in the wall gun shop had the trick'd out hi-point w/lazar, flashlite, and front grip for 425$ + so i became a proud owner of that firearm.

Unfortunately, on the same day i drove 50 miles and i stopped at an out of the way very small gun shop in smallville NC, i happened to ask if they might have the kel tec sub 2k so i could hold it and get a feel of it. the good olde boy behind the counter moved a box on the counter and said...'you're in luck, this one just came in 45 minutes ago!!'

bottom line...i'm the proud owner of both firearms....review:
a. both fired nice groups right out of the box (abet not center mass but consistant 5 rds in 2.5x2.5 in group) used rifle's iron sights not scope.
b. both have had almost 300 rounds of rem 9mm through them in the last two weeks and neither have been troublesome.
c. both are dreams to shoot and the kel tec's seam is neg impact...
d. kel tec is nice cuz i can get extra clips as i went w/the glock (shudder) version.
e. sighting kel tec was difficult per se...

now in my humble whatever, i truly enjoy the kel tec sub 2k over the hi-pt but am going to have to put on a front grip. mainly because it folds in half and is easy to shoot and is accurate as hell.

if you decide w/the hi-pt skip the lazar and flashlite as they are much to do about nothing.

bottom line, glad i own both for about 750$ + and they shoot the same caliber.

(now if i could find some pennys on the ground i would contribute my 2 cents)

Pistol caliber carbines, that's one addiction that is hard to kick.
I have owned Uzi’s, AR’s. Shot several hundred rounds though a hipoint and Ket-Tec.
The attached photos are the only ones that I still own.
For fun and home defense the Beretta is the best of the best. For accuracy as TOU said “way more accurate than I would ever have thought.” It’s one of the few guns in my safe that there is no way I would let it go at any reasonable price.
The HK clone is one of the most fun guns I have every owned and I get the most comments when it’s at the range. Barrel heavy with the fake suppressor that will not come off. The only way it’s become reliable is to replace many of the parts with real HK internals.
I liked the Kel-Tec it has real advantages in way it folds. Shot well but didn’t fit me. The following is a very good review of one.

The Hipoint, no comment, I’ll just be called a Hipoint basher. But 3 Hipoints are not worth one Kel Tek IMO.

TOU the following is a good place to look at improving the trigger of your Beretta.

Happy birthday, Aarond! I generally prefer a good single malt on my birthday but a 9mm would be fun.
I once sold an HK 94 in the price range you specify but wish you luck finding it for that price today. And yes, I threw in the HK scope mount. :(
Please excuse me while I go kick myself.:o

all three guns have caused us grief. not to the point of throwing them away, but at the same time....Im done with a manufacturer when my and everyone elses hi point wont shoot.

I know some hipoints will outshoot a kimber probably...but why chance it. Shipping it back is a HUGE hastle and you cant always trust reproductions.

So, I'm going to presume your answer is "No", then, and the excuse of shipping being a big hassle (albiet Hi-Point coughs up shipping both ways, IIRC) justifies bashing a company's product.

Got it. Carry one.

Happy belated, Aaron. Let us know what you buy and how she shoots.

I noticed it could be configured for several different magazines,,,
It's a crying shame that mags for the CZ-75B won't fit.

Not true! If you can locate any of the older Kel-Tech SUB2000's that take Sig P226 mags...they take CZ mags perfectly!

I was surprised, but both Sig 226 (15/20rd) and CZ-75/85 (16/19/26rd) mags all fit and function perfectly.

Happy Birthday

I have a Hi Point 995TS, and have had no problems at all, I can put mag after mag in 6" at 50 yards with the open sights, for me that's good enough for a 9mm

This is what is next to my bed !

One I did not see mentioned here is Thureon Defense 9mm carbine, it's an AR style, but I haven't tried one yet.

Hello again gentlemen,,,

The purpose for this gun would be a range toy,,,
Or maybe zombie defense if that threat ever happens. ;)

I called Buds and they still have a few of the 9mm models with the older stock,,,
It's somewhat science fiction looking but I like it much better than the new skeleton stock.

...are you like i am when it comes to b'day gifts for yourself...
just cuz i want it and can get it?

Yeppers, That's pretty much the scenario,,, :D
I have a very nice CZ-75B and simply want a carbine to pair it to.

But that would also mean I need a tactical .22 rifle,,,
Something to pair to my CZ-75B Kadet.

Dang!,,,
Having obsessive compulsive tendencies can get expensive. :(

Happy Birthday to Me,,,

It was definitely between the Kel Tec and the Hi-Point,,,
So, I printed out a picture of each of them and stared at them for an hour.

I just couldn't warm up to the Kel Tec,,,
So I bit the bullet and ordered the Hi-Point,,,
With any luck I will have it in hand by next weekend.

I'll do a full range report as soon as I'm able.

Thanks for all the input gentlemen.

I've owned both the Cx4 Storm and the Sub2000 in 9mm. I also owned an Hk USC in .45. The Keltec was a surprise to me because it was super reliable. The downfall, like others have mentioned, was the cheek weld on a metal tube, it was short, and no easy sight options. Sure, I could rig it, but I felt it was best to keep it for what it is. A folding cheap rifle for plinking fun. For defense, nope, not in my house.
The Hk USC was a fantastic rifle, but expensive. To modify it, expensive. I felt that I could get a highly upgraded Cx4 for just over half the price of the USC so that's what I did. Low mag capacity was a negative.
I actually like the Cx4 better than the USC. It has a higher capacity than the USC ten rounders, is a perfect fit for me in the ergos department, is reliable, and accurate. I upgraded it completely for $500 less than a stock USC.
I shot a Hi-Point last week. Although they look ok on the net or in pictures, the thing was, is, looked, felt, shot, and exhuded cheap. Malfunction after malfunction, I won't ever buy one as they are currently. The Cx4 absolutely blows it away in nearly every department except cost. For a plinker, ok, buy a Hi-Point, but for a viable home defense/CQB weapon I would not recommend it. The Cx4 fits the bill, for me.
