It's just a .22!

Actually it wasn't just a blank that killed brandon lee iirc. It was the combination of a squib, and a full powder charge blank. Basically they had one scene that called for a camera angle head on to a revolver and needed the chambers to look like they had live rounds in them. They removed the powder but not the primers from some live rounds then reseated the bullets. At some point the gun was fired with one of these squibs and the bullet lodged in the barrel. Later on they were shooting a scene where they wanted the full muzzle flash of the gun so they loaded blanks with full powder charge, not realizing that the bullet from the squib was still sitting in the barrel of the gun.

IIRC, the actor who got himself a Darwin Award with a blank was named Jon Erik Hexsum (spelling may be incorrect). After delivering several bad 'takes' on a movie set he apparently was clowning around, placed a revolver's muzzle against his temple and fired. The wad drove a piece of his skull into his brain.

Just MO, but if the .22 he was firing was yours, you need to deny him unsupervised access to your weapons - period. If it was his, you probably should insist that it be secured under your control for the duration of his stay. If he balks at the idea, I'd strongly suggest that you insist he find other accomodations.

I saw a fellow get shot, accidentally, with a .22. The bullet entered his thigh at the thickest part and exited the rear. Fortunately, it missed major blood vessels, nerves, and bone, and he was all right after a brief hospital stay. But, obviously, any round that can penetrate 8 or 9 inches of solid flesh and exit is nothing to be taken lightly.

Brother in-law in town for the holidays? Two words, Holiday Inn! If I ever found out something like that there would be harsh words and a very intense slap to the face.

Went shooting w/ a friend & his son. Everything was going well as we were shooting at a cans, etc, in front of a large dirt beam maybe 30ft away. Then the boy says, "dad, think I can hit that target" - a silhouette target maybe 30 yards away. Dad says, "No way. It's only a .22".

I turned my Marlin 60 on it and emptied the mag and said, "let's go see." He seemed genuinely surprised that the 10 ring had more than a few holes*.

*(more credit goes to the Marlin than to me.)

There is no excuse for stupidity, especially from family members. Sooner or later that dude is going to hurt somebody. I hope it is somebody other than your family. Wake him up, or get rid of him, or both.

It's attitudes like "its only a 22" that add fuel to the gun control folks fire.

Lazy safety practices make us all look bad.

If something did go wrong the media would be all over it.

Admittedly, I used to do something similar myself in my basement, but only with low powered CB Caps. Never with .22lr or even .22short.

what an idiot I myself have tested the power of the .22 I once tried to see how many phone books a 22 lr would go through compared to a .177 750fps pellet gun the pellet only went through 3\4 of one phone book the .22lr went though 4 and went through a 2x4 on the other side of the books after that I was out of phone books:eek:
