It's just a .22!

I love hearing this from naive fools.

I found out my brother in law "who is a grown man obviously" was shooting his .22 in my garage at a pile of wood while I was at work. I got really angry and told him what a stupid thing that was to do, and if he wants to shoot he needs to go to the range.

His excuse was "It's just a .22!"

Apparently even grown men think this bullet is a joke and something to be disrespected and played with like a toy.

How much life insurance do you have on him ? I mean, better chances than winning the lottery. That's a mistake many make, and some times... it's their last.

I think folks tend to think of .22s as just a hair more powerful then a BB gun. A lot of this comes from movies, TV and alas even us fellow gunnies (especially when the inevitable SHTF, SD, TEOTWAWKI scenarios come in to play).

The fact is .22 is damn deadly and has probably killed more folks and animals then any other round. It might not do it immediately short of a very good shot but it sure as heck will do it. I behooves us on the forums to constantly drive home the responsibility required and possibility of danger of any projectile weapon. SAFETY, RESPONSIBILITY AND EDUCATION!!! It is important we drive this home to all comers new and old. Hell I have .22 air rifles that will kill a possum dead at 70 yards and these are just "toys" to many people.

Quite right. I've done quite a bit of small game hunting with a 5mm Sheridan Blue Steak in my youth. That is about a .20 caliber, IIRC. It'll take a tree rat out of the top of a big ol' pecan tree just about as well as a .22 will.

Folks, If I can take a tree rat from the top of a big ol' pecan tree with a pellet gun like that, or with a .22, that should tell you something. Those are seriously deadly weapons. Either of them can kill you dead. They are NOT toys.

For real?

Yea. "For real."

I don't know about Dave, but there was a murder/suicide in my family. Not to go into a lot of detail, but the gun involved was a 22 revolver. Two people dead.

This is why I hate the comment, "If you shoot somebody with a .22/.25, you'll just make them mad."

Me too Bill. To me it just shows someone's ignorance. I know a couple other people who have stopped 22 bullets. Not one of them ever said they got mad, or laughed about it. They all said it HURT! It hurt a LOT!

JUST A 22.

Wow I would not want to be shot with one .Remember a few years back when an actor was killed with a blank gun .If i rember it was BRANDON LEE with a 44mag WAX BLANK . But a 22 will end a life in a heart beat be carefull.

It is always a good idea to use hearing protection while shooting, but the need for hearing protection does not equate with lethality. Many of us, probably most of us, have shot thousands and thousands of rounds of .22 from rifles withOUT hearing protection. I know that I did constantly between the ages of 8 years and 22 years of age. A handgun with .22 is a different story because it is louder.

But think about it: If hearing protection is so important, why do they not have it for our soldiers in Iraq?

ummm, because they do?

Many guys (like myself for example) don't like wearing the combat ear plugs. I find that they don't reduce gun fire and explosions enough to be effective and at the same time reduce your regular hearing too much. In vehicles just about everyone has a headset now that greatly reduces noise in the vehicle. Ear plugs are required issue. You might lose them but if you want more ear plugs, all you have to do is ask. And the mini-PX seems to always have them in stock, even though I could never find men's shampoo.

The other issue is that you don't have the time or (really the desire) to put your ear plugs in when the IED goes off or the shooting starts. Maybe a couple of minutes into it, when your adrenalin drops a bit and your ears start to hurt you might think about it. Or if you know something really loud is about to happen (like a 500 pound bomb) you might.

But on to the thread topic.

The .22 is absolutely deadly, so are high powered air rifles, even BB guns. It all goes to how the weapon is applied and under what circumstances.

The BB guns ive seen today don't even measure up to the Daisy RedRider i grew up with, even still i killed several birds with head shots as a kid.

Ive grown to respect the .22 and .25 alot lately.Bill can testify to some of the (.25 is worthless) comments ive received here.

l have been playing around with some hyper velocity 1500-1700 fps .22 rounds and in no way would i want hit with even a 1200fps .22 round.

I will add that in todays gun market it makes alot more sense to carry a .380 and above and i doubt many would argue with that. But the .22 and .25 has its place in the world and will kill you as fast as any other round will.

Where was the Wife during this?

With my mother, Xmas shopping I think. She wasn't home.

He got the message, if he does it again there is going to be serious problems, holiday season or not. But I refrained from going so far as to boot him from the house.

There must be a lot of people out there who think a .22 is no big deal.

Anything that can shoot a projectile over a mile is lethal.
