Is the M&P an elite pistol?

Hey folks thanks for the replies.

DaleA, what I mean by "elite" is..... Are they the best for their intended use.

I have carried a glock 22 in 40 cal for the past 11 yrs for duty and it's been great as far reliability goes. I don't shoot the glock as well as I do some of my other guns but that's not the guns fault of course. I've been told my department is changing for two reasons, (1) it's time for most of us to get new weapons and (2) the powers that be seem to think all of us will be more accurate with them cutting down on possible liability. I don't know for sure, I just do as I'm told.

bs,

I've been told my department is changing for two reasons, (1) it's time for most of us to get new weapons and (2) the powers that be seem to think all of us will be more accurate with them cutting down on possible liability.

If your department is switching from .40 S&W to 9 Luger there may be an element of truth to what you've heard regarding point #2. In May of last year the FBI announced they were moving from .40 to 9 and gave extensive rationale. I think the biggest factors were modern JHP design gives 9 Luger adequate terminal ballistics performance (sufficient penetration while expanding considerably and reliably), less recoil resulting in greater accuracy and quicker followup shots, and greater magazine capacity. I don't know that the improved accuracy translates into a significant lessening of liability, or if the M&P design makes it inherently safer than a Glock.

"-best for intended use"

Well, okay I guess using that definition the Glocks might be considered 'elite'. I'm luke warm about them and haven't owned one but I've shot them and with all the law enforcement agencies that use them...well they're a better judge of what works than I am and I bow to their wisdom.

I certainly agree with you that for self defense the most important thing is reliability.

I've said that some day when the right circumstances arise (that is, I find one cheap) I'd really like to have a Glock 20 (the 10mm one). I've never had a 10mm gun and I think it's a cartridge that's really hard on a handgun but with a Glock I wouldn't mind so much. :D
