Is Taurus any good?

I own three Taurus's, plus several Rossi products. Have sold or given around 20 Taurus's to friends/family. Mostly pocket size semi-autos, i.e. PT's, TCP's, Slim 9's. Have had zero complaints. A good value IMHO.

I owned one Taurus. Was bad out of the box. 1 1/2 years of sending it back and forth. Absolute refusal to let me speak to anyone at the company about it. The only good thing I have to say is after my very detailed BBB complaint I got them to give me a complete refund.

If your gun works out of the box then you're probably fine. If you need to deal with the company for repair or any other reason, good luck.

Crica81:

After my retirement form the Marine Corps I sold guns for twenty years. I solld many, many Taurus guns. I didn't have any more repiar returns than the major manufactures. Turn around time normal and quality of work excellent. A Taurus is a reliable manufacture. However, Smith & Wesson is still king of the hill.

As a retailer, that's the problem I had. If a Taurus gun is good out of the box, it'll likely serve its owner well. The problem is with the "if."

Over the last four years, it became alarmingly common to see guns with glaring defects straight out of the box. In one month, we saw:

  • a Model 85 with a broken cylinder latch screw
  • a Judge with the grip frame visibly bent to the left, to the point it was pulling the sideplate loose
  • two Model 94's with incorrectly bored charge holes that would not chamber ammo
  • a TCP .380 that shipped with no extractor

At that point, we'd already drastically cut our selection of Taurus firearms, but that whole mess was the final straw. There's simply no way we can honestly tell a customer they're getting a good gun.

That doesn't include the failures that took place after the owner's first or second outing on the range with the gun.

Taurus has repeatedly emphasized improvements in their customer service and shipping departments, but I've yet to hear a whisper about improving quality control.

I owned 2 taurus pistols, a mil. pro pt145 & a pt1911. I sold the 145, was never able to get it to feed a full mag, not once. Returned it to Taurus 4 times, each time it came back, "repaired". It never was, and I was never able to talk to anyone at Taurus about the gun. Very poor CS. On the other hand the 1911 has been flawless. No FTF, no FTE, it just keeps on running. I work with a company the teaches cch classes, the only guns that have give us problems during the live fire portion of the class are Taurus and Hi-Points. Would never trust my life to either of the makes.

I owned a model 85 for several years. It went out of time, and was traded off to a gunsmith.

I borrowed my dad's model 94 for a long time. It has one of the heaviest trigger pulls I've ever felt, and has more FTFs than my Buckmark. It's not a favorite of mine.

The two experiences soured me on the brand, personally. YMMV

taurus has one of the largest catalogs of revolvers and semi auto pistols i have ever seen. i have only purchased a small number of taurus products all brand new. i have 3 of probably taurus more popular revolvers in popular calibers and 4 of their most popular semi auto pistols in popular calibers as well. i have never had a single problem with any taurus handgun i have ever purchased. they do make a very large variety of different models so i can only vouch for the models i personally own but so far they have all been accurate, reliable, and well put together handguns. i am looking forward to my next gun purchase, it will be a 22/22mag revolver from taurus.

I have a 627 tracker, great revolver! very accurate, never had any trouble with it...
If you buy a taurus, just check it before you buy it (cylinder and barrel alignment ).
To say that Smith & wesson is much better is not necessarily truth, the 2 last S&W I had went back to the factory one of them came from the performance center (a 627 PC)with a barrel not screwed enough in the frame!
The other one a S&W bodyguard 38, the barrel was just not in the axe of the frame and shot several inches down at 7 yards...
Today's general quality is not what it used to be anymore and you can get lemons from any well know manufacturer.
If a Taurus please you, go to a gun shop and ask their gunsmith to check it.

Digging this up in case anyone was interested. Taurus never would let me speak to anyone other then the receptionist who answers the phones. I filed a complaint with the BBB and put a full refund as my wanted resolution. 30 days later Taurus sends a notice that they agree to give a full refund. No arguments or conditions like "let us try to fix it once more, we'll give you a replacement". I sent the gun in and got my check yesterday. The check is for the exact amount I paid a year and a half ago. I was pretty surprised since the BBB doesn't actually have any power. They can only do things because most places agree that they can. I'm pretty happy about it, I really thought Taurus would just say "we don't care" and I'd be sending it in every couple weeks or selling it for a big loss. Don't mistake this as me finding any respect for Taurus. I see it as they know that they sold me garbage, they know they cant fix it, and they know I would bug them constantly for years.

I remember that. The OP was in September.

Same company but a Rossi brand. It was a 461 it brokeded :D. I sent it in on my dime, at least they sent me a new gun with in about 4 weeks. I think the secret was, I sent my gun in with a bag of candy and Slim Jims* in the box.

Amigo, we generally ask two things:

  • That you take the time to write your posts in a clear manner
  • That you articulate specific reasons for your statements

Revolvers : I have never heard any complaints about the 85, 605 & 617. Everyone that has one, seems to love it. Now, some of the others... seem to be some lemons here or there.

Their semi-autos ----- no experience with them, and have heard enough problems for me to stay away from them.

amigotrooper

still it a P.O.S

This is a guy showing off his Taurus 85 2-3 days ago, and then comes on this board claiming he smashed his Taurus to bit's with a 20lbs hammer.

And let's not forget about his grammmmmar, and I thought mine was bad.

By the way, nice S&W M66. Is that a 3" model?

I own several Taurus revolvers, never an issue. I was in the market for another gun and due to everything I'd read on the internet ;) I decided to try a Smith this time.

Boy, was I surprised, once you start looking around and get away from places that reflexively attack Smith criticizers it's an eye-opening experience:
http://thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=472575 being only one example...they are easy to find on the Smith forum.

I've been frequenting Smith and Taurus forums for quite awhile now, and my impression is that for at least the past 15 years Smith's QC has been a shadow of its former self...perhaps only saved from falling in the same halo as Taurus due to better CS. Plenty of tales of Smiths with significant issues out of the box to be had.

I still bought a Smith. Next year I'll probably buy another. Quite likely, I will buy another Taurus someday. Frankly, there are few companies left in any industry that blow me out of the water on both quality and CS.

Even Ruger quit putting real metal receivers on their 10/22s.

Going on 3 years with a PT1911 in 45 ACP. Thousands and thousands of rounds down it.No complaints yet. As accurate as anything else i have shot. I would not think twice about geting anther one.
