Is barrel break in a myth

I think some miss the point that McMillan was making and never seem to qoute what he said about a dull throater leaving a burr in the leade. I'm sure it would be difficult to improve on his barrel when they left the shop.

But, that is not what you are doing. McMillan said that when the chamber was reamed it could leave a burr on the downwind side of the lands and it could take a couple hundred rounds for the barrel to settle down and shoot it's best.

So, you can do this quickly when you first buy the rilfe, or wait on it.

I go by the amount of copper the barrel is picking up. If there is a lot of copper at the muzzle when I run a copper solvent through I will shoot and clean several times until it's reduced. If the barrel is not picking up copper, I don't.

There is no way to test for accuracy improvment and it doesn't amount to much unless you are trying to win a match by the width of a gnat's ass.

But, it's nice to get the barrel to where a couple of patches after shooting and you are done.
