Inexpensive 22 Plinker?

I've picked up a couple of used Ruger Single-Sixs recently for $250.00. They were asking more, but I made an offer and they took it. Never hurts to ask.

New, the Smith & Wesson 22a, and any of the Ruger MK's semi-auto are all good choices, new or used. Several Harrington & Richardson models come to mind. Too many model numbers to remember but they're, generally speaking, good plinkers.

I would definately look for used first.

I looked at the Ruger & the S&W 22A. To me they both had an odd look & feel. IMHO, the ruger is a ugly gun. But looks doesn't make it shoot!;) For me, the P22 fit my hand great. I new before hand that it required high velocity ammo! 100 rds of CCI Mini Mags will run you $7. Thats still a lot cheaper then my .38 ammo! ~ "JJ"

Ruger, Browning, Beretta,,,

I personally own a 4" Ruger 22/45 that is just too much fun for words,,,
I also own a 6" Beretta U22 NEOS that is a blast to shoot.

The thing about .22 LR semi's is the grip,,,
I found every one of the dang things to have a very different grip feel.

I loved the Browning Buckmark but it's grip is too beg for me.
I say the same thing about the S&W 22A.

Fortunately the grips that fit my hand (22/45 and the NEOS),,,
were attached to quality pistols that shoot well.

Handle the guns and pick the one that fits your hands and that you like,,,
You really can't go wrong with any of the major brands,,,
They will all shoot just fine.

Look around....

and you can find the used Ruger MK I or MK II's for that price - I just picked up a MK I (or "Standard") for $165! Lots of the MK II's will be priced $225 - $299 but they will come down with negotiating.

Invest on a good gun for the "Cheap" ammo, it will pay off in the long run.

Yeah, I've tried that line on my wife too, Elvishead, but she caught on to it pretty quick. It was good for just one purchase, so if anyone else wants to try it, make it a good purchase...

I'm going to suggest a ruger or browning semiauto pistol.

Accuracy in revolvers is so sketchy at that price range, and an inaccurate 22 pistol isn't a plinker, it's a noise maker. Unless you want to shoot at paint cans at 25 feet.

Ruger comes in over a dozen different configurations, check out the two basic grip styles, and go from there. You won't be disappointed.

I looked at a P22 pretty hard. But a friend had one and it wasn't particularly reliable no matter what I we stuffed in it. It also had a problem with the thing on the muzzle end falling off. Cant remember what it's called. He even locktited it but it still came off every so often.

I also really like the Browning Buckmark and Smith J frame with the Hi Viz sights. But I ended up with a 22/45. It's hard to beat a Ruger 22 for value. And parts are everywhere.

Really? Nobody mentioned the Heritage Rough Rider?

For under $200 brand new, you can buy a rough ryder single action revolver. It will come with a .22lr cylinder, AND a .22 magnum cylinder. Best deal in the universe.

I was going to mention the Rough Rider. I recently picked one up for $199 and have loved shooting it. It is a fixed sight model and shoots to the left but I am dealing with that. The finish is horrible and is vanishing after two cleanings and no I am not using a solvent on the frame, but damn I still love that revolver. There is just something about it that appeals to me. If I were to buy another one it would be a SS adjustable sight model but I would buy another one.

I still say the 10/22. Replace the factory stock with a folding stock and you have yourself a nice , but large pistol. tehe,,,,, 25-100 rounds of fun.

As I indicated in Post #3, there are plenty of "no name" West German companies that used to make a .22LR/.22 Magnum SAA clone. Even though these guns are not going to set the world on fire, they are still better made (and less expensive) than a Rough Rider.

I should take a photo of my Jana Bison. It looks beautiful, even after 43 years of hard use and abuse. By abuse, I am including my father leaving it in a leather holster for several years.

FWIW, this gun is the reason why I will NEVER own another gateloading revolver. It's not worth the dang effort for .22LR.

Ruger MKII, MKI, MKIII in that order. My favorite "plinker" is an old HS Victor but that'll bust your budget.
Sorry, reloading a SA .44 is OK but a .22 is too much of a PIA for me.

Te Anau said "A Beretta Neos is your best bet in a new gun in this price range.A Walther P22 or Sig Mosquito are two guns to avoid. They are way overpriced for the materials they are made of and generally dislike inexpensive bulk ammo. The Neos thrives on the cheap stuff."

Exactly what I would have said but he beet me to it.

Also check the sticky's on this web site for ones that have had recalls.

I have 3 Neos, two 6" and one 7 1/2 and love them. Shoot a bazillion rounds through one of the 6" and never had a problem. Takes all kinds of ammo from cheep to high velocity. Not as accurate as my Trailside was or a model 41, but a lot cheeper than those 2, and I'd put it up against the Ruger any day. Easy to break down, doesn't even need a tool and cleaning is a breeze.

How about a sub $250 plinker that will fit in your pocket.
Phoenix 22A deluxe range kit. Comes with 3inch short & 5 inch interchangeable target barrel plus 2/10 round mags.

Doesn't get much cheaper to shoot 22.
