In search of a full-size 9mm handgun

Customer Suppport

Lots of very good posts, but so far no one has mentioned the very important issue of customer support. Make sure what you get has a company that stands behind it and that is willing to make things right if they go wrong. Why? Because a lemon gets by everyone's QC once in a while. If you get a lemon it's good to know that you won't have to shell out your cash to get fixed. ;)

Get what you want, no matter if it costs twice as much as the next best. You'll end up getting what you want anyway, except you'll be out more cash because you'll take a loss when you sell. Once in a shop I heard a guy give great advice, it went something like, "get what you want because if not when you're at the range you'll have that nagging feeling, I coulda had a V8" :D

Etron,

Kind of in the same dilemma. Looking for a high-capacity 9mm pistol.
I already have two Glock's and although they are O.K, I'm weary of polymer.
The CZ and W99 are fine pistols, with a nod to the CZ BUT, I really like the way the P226 feels in my hand. Liked it so much I bought some factory, never used high-cap's for $59.95 each.
If you in the market for a DA/SA pistol that's got many kudos than I say go for the P226!
The HK's are O.K. but again if I want polymer in a pistol than I'll buy a Glock. Of course this excludes the P7.
I might also add that the U.S. Army adopted the P228 (the younger brother of the P226) and many Federal agencies use the P228 as a backup (I believe the U.S. Army designator is the M10?).
If you go to www.sigarms.com I believe the P229 is the "new. improved" P228. Think it can also use the P226 mag's?
Also don't forget that when the U.S. Army was running it's pistol challenges for the sidearm to replace the 1911 in the early 80's it came down the the P226 and the 92F.
The only reason the 92F won was because it was offered at a slightly lower price. IMHO if the P226 would of been offered for ~$25.00 at the trials our troops would be using the P226.

I just thought I would update you guys on my ongoing search. I went to the range last night with my wife and we shot a glock19c and a sig p226. Well, I re-verified my earlier conclusion that I don't like glocks at all. The p226 was great to shoot, I really like this gun. So I've really narrowed things down to 2 guns. Either the p226 or the p228. I have yet to fire a p228, and I heard that it has a different grip than the p226 which has a "European style" grip. So I definately have to shoot each of these 2 guns before I make my final decision. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find a range anywhere near my area that has a p228 available for rent. Anyway, there are some subtle concerns I have about each gun that I want to ask you experts about :)

For the p226, there are 3 versions:

1. West German made and assembled, stamped slide.

2. West German made, US assembled, stamped slide.

3. West German made, US assembled, milled slide.

I am not sure which of these would be the best to get.

And for the p228, there are 2 versions:

1. West German made and assembled.

2. West German made, US assembled.

For this one, I've *heard* that #1 has "tighter tolerances" and is the better gun, but I'm not convinced.

Anyhow, how can I identify between these 5 different versions, and which one is definately the better gun between the 3 different versions for the p226 and the 2 different versions for the p228?

I'm sorry, this is probably entirely prejudice on my part. Or maybe it is blind infatuation as I only got the SIG Pro a few weeks ago. But it has the best off the shelf trigger I've seen in 40 years. Maybe it is dumb luck and every other one made escept mine is a piece of crap or maybe I've been shooting a series of guns with bad trigger feel all these years both of which are possible.

But I believe that if one is considering SIGs at all they should at least try out the Pro. They don't need to buy it, just try it. No you can't have mine.
