I'm done buying ammo...for a year

I can't afford to buy all the ammo I'll need for a year, at one time. That would be like buying a $1,500 gas card for my car. Probably best to buy as needed.

Three Things You Can Never Have Too Much Of...

1. Ammo

2. Fuel

3. Altitude

I usually buy 1-2 boxes per month to stock up, plus what I shoot in practice, rotating between calibres that I own.

What a story....The Never Ending StoooOOORY

I decided about 4-5 years ago, when I first started buying guns (I had my little Marlin chipmunk .22 bolt grandpa gave me when I was 12) That I never wanted to not have enough ammo for atleast a few sessions at a time.

There...

But, after that, and 5 years later, and 19 or so guns latter. I have accumulated aLot of ammo.

I wanted to have enough so that each gun has atleast 1000 rounds and some have close to half of their "service life" worth of ammo. I found that by buying a bunch in the last few years I've saved A bunch of Money.

I bought 4000 .308 Lithuanian Surplus (Great rounds, reloadable brass) They are actually a NATO round 7.62x51... I got them for $550 each crate of 1000. Thats .55 cents a round... Good luck finding that price on even Steel cased .308 NOw....

Same with 9mm... Its was $13 or $14 a box of 100 a while ago... Now it's almost $19 *From walmart of course*

I'm happy I did what I did. I have lots of shooting ahead of me... and alot of fun firearms to shoot.

Also, I'll collect all of my brass, and others brass from the range, and maybe. One day, I'll get into reloading.... and I hope it's still a practical thing to do by the time I want to start.

Lets hope all goes well... and speak out and make sure people know that Guns and Ammo are what makes America Great!

Not nearly enough

.40 I have about 350
9mm I have 100:(
.380 I have 200:(
12G Less than 50:(

I got some work cut out for me.

Do I have enough ammo?

No, am I buy at least a couple boxes of .38 Special, .357 Mag, 9mm, .45acp at every Gun Show I attend. Problem is, there is less and less at each show (and it is the same in my local gun shops). My goal is to have enough stored in protective metal cases to last a long time. You never know what will happen down the road with respect to being able to purchase ammo as we can do now............ Besides, at the very least it is good trading material, for something else I may need/want.

I am pretty well stocked, with a few thousand rounds of assorted flavors.

It really bugs me that going to the range to shoot my .45 will cost me $20 range fee, and $50 in ammo! That don't work, so I just shoot a couple mags of 9 thru my carry gun, and then shoot .22's...which costs about $10 in ammo, instead of $50.

I used to shoot once a month with my buddy, now we shoot maybe 3-4 times a year.

times are hard for most, but for shooters its even worse. i used to think $12 for a box of .45 was alot, and wouldn't pay more than $5-6 for 9mm.

I dont get it, metals prices have dropped by about 50% since aug 08', how come ammo prices don't come down?

Folks still buy ammo someone else made?
For the most part, I don't. Not any more, I haven't bought factory ammo in quite a while. Well, except for .22 lr, you can't reload it. And .30-30, but that was just stocking up due to getting the new rifle. I won't be buying any more factory ammo for it anymore, just components.

Now, it it weren't for the scarcity of reloading components...

I dont get it, metals prices have dropped by about 50% since aug 08', how come ammo prices don't come down?

Econ 101. Supply and demand. The demand has skyrocketed, and the supply has remained relatively constant. Manufacturers have deemed the current demand spike as being just that -- a spike, hence they aren't going to increase capacity. Nobody in their right mind would choose to enter the manufacturing end of the business at this time, due to the uncertainty regarding the future of the business -- you can thank the current administration for that. Oh, and add in the financial difficulties brought on by that industry's woes making it difficult to fund any manufacturing expansions or new start-ups even if anybody were to want to do such a thing.

Luckly and by fate we loaded up on Mil surplus at Knob Creek about five years ago on 8mm, 7mm, 7.62, 308 and 5.56. I think the average cost was about $.06 per round. Still have about half of that purchase left. In hindsight Lugging those pallets of cases wound up being worth the trouble. :):D:)

Have more than enough .38/.357 but getting very low 9MM, ,45ACP and .45 Colt and can't find anythink local to reload for them:mad: At the range I shoot at the only allow you to buy two boxs of any ammo. So I shoot three boxs and if have any buy two????

I probably have enough components to last about 5 years, plus 1000 rounds of .30-06 surplus ammo, and maybe 1000 rounds total assorted pistol cartridges made up.

I'll feel a lot better about it when (if?) the case of .22LR that I ordered from CMP three months ago gets here; I'm down to just a few hundred rounds of .22's.

Ammo? Not so good, except for .22LR--I may have a year's worth.

Components? I'm doing okay. I only turn components into ammo as I find the time, and as I have a need. Keeping a few hundred rounds of commonly used calibers is good enough (for me).

.40S&W - 400 Factory Rounds/Handloads- about 250 and counting
10mm - 1200 factory rounds/handloads- about 800 and counting
.38spl - 250 factory rounds/handloads- ordered a case of 500+ once fired brass, got to find a deal on bullets...
30/06 - 600 factory rounds (found a great deal on the wolf cheap stuff) / handloads- haven't started handloading for it yet, but I've got the dies for it
12ga - 10 cases of rem 3" mag nitro steel BB
22lr - just under 8k rounds, gettin kinda low...

I've got about 1500 once fired .45acp cases that I've offered locally in exchange for 10mm or .40S&W... Got ten calls in five minutes offering prices of $150-$350... Still didn't get any more 10mm brass... But that $300 (last few offers were made after deal was done) will buy me a lot of 10mm and .40S&W brass :D :D :D

Guess you .45 shooters are getting hard up for components huh???

I personally commend the OP for slowing his purchases, to calm the pricing. The insane amount of buying and hoarding is what's driving prices up. And we are all gun enthusiasts, but it sucks if person A has 20,000 rounds of 9mm in their house "in case the SHTF and the magical evil shows up" and his neighbor or friend has none. If you were on your way out for a drive, and I pulled out of the gas station with a tanker truck full of gas, and I had just drained the last 3 stations, you would want to shoot the truck and send me up in a wall of flames. I understand having a good amount, but at one point or another it turns into taking it away from your fellow enthusiast. If I ever feel the need to have 10000+ rounds of anything at ONE time, I will buy reloading equipment. That saves everyone money.

Just think, if the SHTF and someone takes over your house somehow, you would like to think your neighbor has at 1 bullet to come and help you out. Oh wait, it's all in your basement....
