I'll never need a gun - Part 5

No matter how innocent, no matter if one is just watching TV at home, a gun should be at your ready

Well if yer place is secure and you have alarms that alert you to danger, I see no need to have it at hand. Close by yes, the alerts give me enough time to get it. Not much crime where I live, since the floods none at all, they cant cross the river and come on over as they once did from a bad crime area.

I feel for those that live in a high danger area, its just too bad our society has deteriated to this. Punk criminals get off, or let out early from the "educational centers" and then go and commit worse crimes.

Close by is enough. I guess I am not paranoid so that I live in fear 24/7.

How many of you have had to repel a home invasion?
With several thousand members surely several have been required to do so if we are in such mortal danger at all times.

Having a gun that is reasonably available and loaded is prudent, but to carry one around in the house - well I consider that just unhealthy fear. But to each his own.
No doubt where you live is germane. But don't tell me that I have the same risk as the areas of drug and gang activity. Metal storm doors are a good idea anywhere. That prevents someone from kicking in the door.

So far it has worked for me and everyone I know. some who do not own a gun.

My point is that the sky is not falling.

In some areas it would be wise, but I have never thought it necessary where I live. If I lived in a dangerous city or neighborhood I would move. I refuse to live in a state of fear that requires me to be armed at home at all times.

I carry at home, and I don't live in an area that's all that bod...well, other than it's proximity to the Mexican border.

I also don't live in a "state of fear". I simply carry as a matter of course; it's become routine, and carrying a firearm is as natural as carrying a cell phone and pocket knife. It's there if I need it, and if not, then it gets little thought.

Well, I've had folks accuse me of being paranoid, but I wear a gun on me pretty much from the time I wake up, 'till I go to sleep that night. When I sleep, it's never far from me.

All well and good, but the greatest danger from criminal attack occurs when we LEAVE our homes. Sometimes we tend to forget that.

According to a report by the United States Department of Justice, 38% of assaults and 60% of rapes occur in the home during a home invasion. Across the US there are 8,000 reported home invasions per day. Pretty good reasons to carry in your home.

I guess that's my cue.

I have had to repel a home invasion, occurred at about 1:00 AM on a weeknight in the fall of 1996.

Someone kicked in the kitchen door while my wife and I were at home. She was asleep in the bedroom at the far end of the house, I was watching TV about 20 feet away from the door that was being kicked in.

I did have guns that were loaded and "reasonably available", but only if I were at the other end of the house where the bedrooms were located.

I had to run to that end of the house to grab my loaded 12-ga pump shotgun. By the time I got it and headed back to the kitchen (probably less than 15 seconds) the door had given way, the burglars had grabbed my wife's purse off the kitchen table, and were gone.

So lucky for us, it was only a quick smash-and-grab of a purse. Usually someone breaking into an obviously occupied home at night has other motives.

I still don't carry a gun with me at all times while at home, but it's not necessarily a bad idea. You don't know how much time you'll have or how far you have to run.

My solution is to make the run shorter by having firearms where I can get to them quickly in different parts of the house. For someone who only owns one or two, carrying it might be the only option.

This is not the USA we grew up in. It has become something much more dangerous and innocent, avoidant behavior cannot save anyone from the danger.

I'm trying to decide if the OP is making a joke here...

Why do I ask? Because the violent crime rate in the US right now is equal to what it was in the late 60s. Violent crime in the US, despite a rapidly growing population, has fallen every year since 1993 and is at an all time low.

I'm not giving up my guns but facts are facts.

I can guarantee that if anybody kicks my front door in, and steps into my house, the undertakers will be picking them up. Any time my door is kicked in, I'm in fear for my life, and I have retreated as far as I can go.

There's almost 6K members on this board. Probably less than half post and read on a regular basis, but the mods would know better than I. A few post before this one, someone acknowledged that they were a home invasion statistic. Not going to bore you with my research, but the number is around 1 in 2,000 for home invasions.

Yeah and statistically speaking you are more likely to be crushed by a vending machine than killed by a terrorist. Yet, look what people submit themselves too at airports to feel safe. Tell me, who is more paranoid?

Facts are always interesting. It's also true that many areas of our country have seen a tremendous spike in drug related crimes---especially when Meth shows up in communities.

Home invasion robberies haven't decreased, but seem to be increasing in many areas, (including my community)and burglaries are still as prevalent as ever.

Crime in some US border cities has soared. Despite your "facts are facts" assertion, I can see what's happening in my own community. Yes, certain types of crimes are down. Some aren't. For example, certain types of crimes have decreased since CCW.

Of course, where stats are concerned, what's new about a bureaucrat telling us that we're all safer? Shine a light on the subject from different angles and the view changes.

I hope I never need a gun, I have pepper/tear gas spray and a stun gun in addition the my .38 and 22 BUG. But if they pull a knife, bat, or other weapon's that's a threat on my life, I bypass the spray, and 100,000 volt gun, and go for gunpowder and lead.:D
