If You Think Bush Is Evil Now, Wait Until He Nukes Iran
by Paul Craig Roberts

The war in Iraq is lost. This fact is widely recognized by American military officers and has been recently expressed forcefully by Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez, the commander of US forces in Iraq during the first year of the attempted occupation. Winning is no longer an option. Our best hope, Gen. Sanchez says, is "to stave off defeat," and that requires more intelligence and leadership than Gen. Sanchez sees in the entirety of our national political leadership: "I am absolutely convinced that America has a crisis in leadership at this time."

More evidence that the war is lost arrived June 4 with headlines reporting: "U.S.-led soldiers control only about a third of Baghdad, the military said on Monday." After five years of war the US controls one-third of one city and nothing else.

A host of US commanding generals have said that the Iraq war is destroying the US military. A year ago Colin Powell said that the US Army is "about broken." Lt. Gen. Clyde Vaughn says Bush has "piecemealed our force to death." Gen. Barry McCafrey testified to the US Senate that "the Army will unravel."

Col. Andy Bacevich, America’s foremost writer on military affairs, documents in the current issue of The American Conservative that Bush’s insane war has depleted and exhausted the US Army and Marine Corps:

"Only a third of the regular Army’s brigades qualify as combat-ready. In the reserve components, none meet that standard. When the last of the units reaches Baghdad as part of the president’s strategy of escalation, the US will be left without a ready-to-deploy land force reserve."

"The stress of repeated combat tours is sapping the Army’s lifeblood. Especially worrying is the accelerating exodus of experienced leaders. The service is currently short 3,000 commissioned officers. By next year, the number is projected to grow to 3,500. The Guard and reserves are in even worse shape. There the shortage amounts to 7,500 officers. Young West Pointers are bailing out of the Army at a rate not seen in three decades. In an effort to staunch the losses, that service has begun offering a $20,000 bonus to newly promoted captains who agree to stay on for an additional three years. Meanwhile, as more and more officers want out, fewer and fewer want in: ROTC scholarships go unfilled for a lack of qualified applicants."

Bush has taken every desperate measure. Enlistment ages have been pushed up from 35 to 42. The percentage of high school dropouts and the number of recruits scoring at the bottom end of tests have spiked. The US military is forced to recruit among drug users and convicted criminals. Bacevich reports that wavers "issued to convicted felons jumped by 30 percent." Combat tours have been extended from 12 to 15 months, and the same troops are being deployed again and again.

There is no equipment for training. Bacevich reports that "some $212 billion worth has been destroyed, damaged, or just plain worn out." What remains is in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Under these circumstances, "staying the course" means total defeat. Even the neoconservative warmongers, who deceived Americans with the promise of a "cakewalk war" that would be over in six weeks, believe that the war is lost. But they have not given up. They have a last desperate plan: Bomb Iran. Vice President Dick Cheney is spear-heading the neocon plan, and Norman Podhoretz is the plan’s leading propagandist with his numerous pleas published in the Wall Street Journal and Commentary to bomb Iran. Podhoretz, like every neoconservative, is a total Islamophobe. Podhoretz has written that Islam must be deracinated and the religion destroyed, a genocide for the Muslim people.

The neocons think that by bombing Iran the US will provoke Iran to arm the Shiite militias in Iraq with armor-piercing rocket-propelled grenades and with surface-to-air missiles and unleash the militias against US troops. These weapons would neutralize US tanks and helicopter gunships and destroy the US military edge, leaving divided and isolated US forces subject to being cut off from supplies and retreat routes. With America on the verge of losing most of its troops in Iraq, the cry would go up to "save the troops" by nuking Iran.

Five years of unsuccessful war in Iraq and Afghanistan and Israel’s recent military defeat in Lebanon have convinced the neocons that America and Israel cannot establish hegemony over the Middle East with conventional forces alone. The neocons have changed US war doctrine, which now permits the US to preemptively strike with nuclear weapons a non-nuclear power. Neocons are forever heard saying, "what’s the use of having nuclear weapons if you can’t use them."

Neocons have convinced themselves that nuking Iran will show the Muslim world that Muslims have no alternative to submitting to the will of the US government. Insurgency and terrorism cannot prevail against nuclear weapons.

Many US military officers are horrified at what they think would be the worst war crime ever orchestrated. There are reports of threatened resignations. But Dick Cheney is resolute. He tells Bush that the plan will save him from the ignominy of losing the war and restore his popularity as the president who saved Americans from Iranian nuclear weapons. With the captive American media providing propaganda cover, the neoconservatives believe that their plan can pull their chestnuts out of the fire and rescue them from the failure that their delusion has wrought.

The American electorate decided last November that they must do something about the failed war and gave the Democrats control of both houses of Congress. However, the Democrats have decided that it is easier to be complicit in war crimes than to represent the wishes of the electorate and hold a rogue president accountable. If Cheney again prevails, America will supplant the Third Reich as the most reviled country in recorded history.

Has your doctor suggested any medications? You know, the drugs they have now have a lot fewer side effects than in the bad, old days.

edit: nevermind, mods can you please tell the troll lightningjoe to not clutter up threads with personal attacks anymore please

Dude, nobody's going to drop a nuke on Iran. Saudi Arabia might do so 5-10 years from now when Iran tries to invade them, but not the US.

PCR writes a lot of great columns, and this is no exception. His grasp of the true meaning of current events is superb.

Bush and Cheney aren't the only problem, though. Most of the candidates for the GOP nomination -- pretty much everyone except Ron Paul -- said they wouldn't take nuking Iran off the table. (It's funny how the neocons never made any military threats against North Korea. Maybe that has something to do with the fact that NK isn't perceived as a threat to Israel, America's pampered pet.)

I wonder how many people have been stricken by the irony and grotesque hypocrisy of the US using WMDs against a country in order to prevent it from (supposedly) acquiring the same WMDs that the US, Israel, Pakistan, India, and a few other nations have. Especially when Iran has never threatened the US or even Israel, in spite of the widespread misquoting of the Iranian president.

The neocons, with their single-minded desire to use US military power to increase Israeli hegemony in the Middle East, are turning America into the next Nazi Germany. Our government has an attitude that anything it does is okay, that it alone can decide the fate of other nations, and that the taking of human life on a massive scale is perfectly fine as long as we're the ones who are doing it. It promotes American exceptionalism rather than a universal moral standard. That should bother anyone who loves this country and what it was meant to be.

We won't have to nuke them. Israel will do it all on their own but the net result will be the same. Pretty much every nation in the middle-east would see an Israeli nuclear attack on Iran as a US/Israeli attack and things will go from bad to much, much worse. The Iranian nuclear facilities are so hardened that a thermonuclear "bunker-buster" is the only practical military tool for the job.

Israel is not going to stand by and watch Iran stockpile nukes. They will take action and they have the tools.

I hope I'm wrong. Goddamn I hope I'm wrong.

If Israel does it, then I still won't like it, as a lot of innocent people will be killed, and it will be a hypocritical act of aggression. But at least in that case the US won't be complicit in a horrible war crime. I say let the Israelis do their own dirty work instead of constantly trying to get the US to spend our blood, money, and moral standing for them (like we've already done and continue to do in Iraq).

Of course the US will still refer to such an attack as "self-defense." It's okay for Israel to have nukes, but not for anyone else in the Middle East. Why? Ask AIPAC, ZOA, JINSA, WZO, or any of the other organizations that exist solely to subvert the US government so that it puts Israeli interests ahead of America's. Israel could bomb every orphanage and nursing home in Palestine or Lebanon, and the US government would repeat its refrain that "Israel has the right to defend itself" (even through widespread, brutal collective punishment, presumably). Our government is so controlled by the Israel-first lobby that even the USS Liberty massacre continues to be covered up to this day, as the following veteran-run site explains:

http://home.cfl.rr.com/gidusko/liberty/

This is why neoconservatism is such a scam. It's not real conservatism at all -- it's nothing more than advocating US involvement in Mideast wars, with the ulterior motive of benefitting Israel. It's horrifying that so many American have fallen for it. And I hasten to add that most Jews (including myself) are not neocons, and that many neocons are not Jewish (a large number are so-called "Christian Zionists").

Only person I think might nuke Iran is Hitlery, who is more of an AIPAC hawk than any of the current administration could ever hope to be.

I honestly think we need to cut Israel off. They cause WAY too much trouble to keep supporting and I bet most hatred of the US in the ME would stop existing instantly if we did. I think they would do fine without aid from us.

The problem is they have the US government and the media on lockdown, anyone critical of Israel or it's policies is automatically an anti-semite somehow. It's political suicide for any public figure to suggest we should treat Israel and it's enemies fairly. It's ridiculous and it needs to stop, US is not Israel.

Only person I think might nuke Iran is Hitlery, who is more of an AIPAC hawk than any of the current administration could ever hope to be.
Yes this is one of the worst thing about her, watch her answers to questions about Iran, really scary.

The Liberty was a spy-ship of the highest order acting oddly just outside of Israeli waters during one of the most militarily tenuous periods in Israeli history. Because of these facts the real story will never be known, but I think it smells more like a screwup than a nefarious act.

I don't think that incident really says much about the US/Israeli system of mutual support and if you think Israel is not pulling their weight it's only because Mossad still believes in keeping their mouths shut. Israeli operations only make the news when things go badly.

I like the Israelis but things could get very messy very soon with this Iran deal.

The issue seems to be that whenever Israel throws a punch, they then duck and the US, standing behind them, takes the return hit in the face.

Iran would have to be stupid to not try to develop nukes, they are the only thing that will guarantee their safety against us. Lets look at what's happened with Bush's "axis of evil":

Iraq: Invaded
North Korea: Built a nuke, tested it and the US suddenly forgot about them
Iran: Trying to build one so it doesn't get invaded, wants to be like NK

I just don't understand why they are making it so obvious, if I was the leader of Iran I wouldn't go boasting about my attempts to get nuclear "power", I would make a couple hydrogen bombs in secret, set one off and then tell the US to leave me alone.

Wow. It seems that I have underestimated TFL posters. I'm impressed that more than I would have ever believed aren't completely fooled by the U.S. media, Hollywood, and the fear of extortion of being called "anti-semitic", or in the case of Jewish people being called "self-hating" if they have any harsh words about Israel. But make no mistake about it: you are being very brave for admitting as much.

As for Israel bombing Iran or whoever, have you ever heard of the "Sampson Complex"? Very scary stuff.

One more thing...oldbillthundercheif, I beg to differ on one point you made. The facts of the USS Liberty are easily found if you want them. The problem is that very very few people even know about the incident at all, thanks in large part to the acts or lack thereof by a bought and fearful government and very cooperative, corporate-owned U.S. mainstream media. That incident is an absolute travesty, but is only one of many many travesties when it comes to the subject with which people here are flirting.

The world is an ugly place and you don't have to look far to find ugliness (covered up of course). What bothers me about the case of that sectarian country is that it is absolute taboo to even discuss the possibility of its ugliness...which is just ridiculous especially when they are among the biggest offenders (second only to the U.S.).

People here may now blast me for saying so, but I don't want to get into a p****** match. I don't have the time or energy anymore. All I have to say is read the web-sites of the various human rights organizations and start from there. Then read the press from other countries and read books and periodicals from the various free-presses here and abroad. You will find the world is quite different from how the mainstream press presents it here.

How many people here besides byself actually watched the Republican debate last night? Any of you who think they wouldn't...best review the video.

I rather doubt anyone has any desire to turn any of the oil fields in the Mid East radioactive.....

IMNSHO - this is the silliest Bush Bashing thread ever.

There's simply no logical reason for a nuke attack on Iran.(from the US that is)

It took all of about four seconds to google "China oil" to come up with the countries China depends on for 58% of it's supply of crude - yes - Iran is one of them.

Bush nukes Iran - Iran can't export oil to China - China gets pissed.

Get real......

The fact remains that Israel is the ONLY foreign nation to sink a U.S. vessel and get away with it. I find that really odd.

As for Iran, with China backing it there won't even be a conventional war there much less a nuclear confrontation. We, in our current disarmed state, could not handle a reprisal from China in CONUS. The DOD knows this.

I personally dont think you can compare North Korea and Iran one is still rising in terms of power and North Korea is and has been for a long time falling.

Besides all because you will not take the nuclear option off the table that does not mean you would use it, it just means you want your enemy to think you "might" use it.

If a Bad Guy invades your home and you get the drop on him, do you neccesarily have to shoot him, no but he has to think you might shoot him so he will be convinced to lay down on the floor with his hands above his head and wait till the boys in blue come and put him in cuffs.

Unfortunetly the bad guy in Iran just might be crazy and not care. (damn complicated issue)

Funny, all this time I was worrying more about Bush now getting Russia angr(ier) with us... I really can't believe the rampant ignorance at this point, and I *really* don't want to have to deal with Russia, diplomatically or otherwise, over an issue like the missile defense system. We shouldn't have anything but good relations with them, and now this. Ugh.

I think we need to distance ourselves from Israel for a while and work on fixing our own country, not others. How about a five or ten year period of infrastructure building? Anyone? Hmm?
