Idiot open carries in my store

Today a remarkable thing happened. I work security in a retail establishment in Syracuse, NY. A man walks into the store and has a pistol on his waist. No armed security uniform. No shield on his belt. He's just open carrying in New York. I've never seen that. It struck me as odd, but for all I know he's a LEO that for whatever reason doesn't have his badge on. Just to be safe and do my job right, I call it in. Police arrive within moments and pull him over down the street from my store. The wagon comes after a few moments and an officer arrives to speak with me and get all my info. I ask him, "What was the deal with that guy?" Cop responds, "I don't know but he's a psycho!" They found an arsenal of loaded weapons in his car along with drugs. I kid you not my friends. Had he not of have been walking around with his gun out, he'd be somewhere right now planning some sort of horrible thing I'm sure. The stupidity of people never ceases to amaze me. I'm waiting to see if it makes the papers.

Let me see if I got this one...

Open carry is illegal in NY and this jamoke walks around with a gun and has dope in his car to boot?

That right WildmyoldfriendAlaska. Can you believe that? If I had noticed a concealed weapon holstered, I would have given him the benefit of the doubt that he has a concealed permit. Seriously though, he should have just worn a sign. I mean, are you kidding me? I actually felt bad for a moment thinking, maybe it's someone from an open carry state that just didn't realize and made a bad mistake. I didn't want to be responsible for that. The officer telling me the outcome of the stop consoled me.

Wow Eric, good shot!

Who knows what that guy was up to......

And GEEEEZZZZZ!!! What a moron!

If I was committing crimes (ie Possession of Drugs and/or Illegal weapons), I sure wouldn't be walking around OC in NY.

Wow. I mean, wow.

Congrats on keeping a nut off the street.

It's a fact of life -- there are dumb crooks and bad guys/gals out there as well as some smart ones.

Wow. Sounds like someone LOOKING for trouble. Maybe wanted to shoot someone or get shot. Glad it ended without shots as no one needs that but this is way, way out there.

I live in an open carry state but used to live back east... night and day as to how these things go.

Eric you made a good call in how you did things... I will freely admit I would have been tempted to say something rather than call LE and possibly waste time / energy. In this case that could have gotten me killed...

Doped up psychos with a car full of loaded guns, illegally carrying a weapon, could be more complicated and dangerous than the term "stupid crook" implies. Not saying he was smart, mind you.

What an idiot. I hope he gets some help. Glad you made the right call and everything worked out for the best. Drugs and guns together....isn't that a felony right there? Is open carry in a non open carry state a felony also?

C, he wasn't a problem in the store at all. This is why I felt bad at first. I was thinking maybe I shouldn't have called the police, he wasn't causing any problem and I don't want to ruin the life of some decent guy who made a mistake. I also thought though, is this guy some mall ninja or wannabe cop? I figured I call and if he is a LEO, it'll all be straightened out, no harm no foul. I'm glad I did call. My own sense of empathy almost let a criminal go free. I'm not against open carry, but here in NY it is the law of the land and above all else, we obey the law. If any of you who live in open carry states were to travel to NY, you'd have the good sense to know our laws, right? My initial thought was maybe this guy just didn't. Hindsight is 20/20.

Apparently the cops knew of him or had some kind of "run in" with him in the past. Since they knew he was a nut job or physco. You did the right thing though, and should feel good for it. Saved many innicent folks from some one like him in his state of mind.

Right on!!!

Bill

You did your job.

First, good job, that's what you get paid for. Guy was breaking the law; if he doesn't like the law, he should move. I wouldn't live in New York for that reason, the laws suck. Second, the criminal's disrespect for the law will get them hanged. If I remember, wasn't Timothy McVeigh caught because his getaway car had no license plate? The corollary is that drugs make you stupid.

Let me clarify, the New York laws that ban drugs or having guns and drugs aren't what I think suck. I was refering to NYC, sorry to paint the upstate people with the NYC brush.
