I Spell Perfection, R.E.M.I.N.G.T.O.N.

wow some good shooting posted on this thread. I will post a pic of my target.............55 gallon drum at 100 yards.....hit it every time.

Now just work on hitting the bung hole. :p

Well it happened... I blew out my cheap CenterPoint scope. For $67.00, it was bound to happen sooner rather than later. Sadly, I replaced it with the exact same make and model scope, but maybe this time it will last until I can afford a much nicer scope... I didn't have to pay for the replacement.

This is my best group from the new scope, and this was shot during the zeroing process. It turns out that it is my 2nd best group ever from the R7001P, so I can't complain too much. A 3-shot 0.160 MOA group is nothing to sneeze at... Especially from a $67.00 scope. :)

Still loving the R700 Police... This rifle ROCKS!

My best group yet!

This 100-yard, 3-shot group measures only 0.122 MOA, which was shot in preparation for a match next weekend.

Thanks for putting up with my posts. Sometimes, when you get so excited about a new toy, you just have to tell somebody... Over and over and over... :)

How's Perfection Spelled?
Here all these years I thought it was spelled

S-A-K-O/S-W-A-R-O-V-S-K-I

You only spell it that way when you are trying to buy all the game you can. I've golfed with a few guys who spell like that. :)

Well you guys shamed me into it... I just had to go get a "better" scope.

My stick now wears a Leupold VX-II 6-18x40 with a fine duplex reticle.

If my groups go to hell now, I'm blaming every last one of you scope snobs. ;)

I know it's no S-W-A-R-O-V-S-K-I, but then again, it's no CenterPoint either. Now let's see if my consistency improves.

Poor Man's Swarovski

I'd rather put the money into rifles than a single scope, I've been really happy with Elite 4200's, especially the 6-24x and 8-32x, online price of about $350 it doesn't break the bank. Another fine scope is the Pentax Whitetail hunter 4.4-14x, it's the same as the $500+ Burris Fullfield II at about $225. They are as good as the cheaper ($900) Zeiss Conquests. Swift Premier 6-24x and 8-32x scopes are very surprising at an online $ of about $225, no edge distortion or haziness at full magnification and the adjustments are very repeatable, better than any other budget high power scopes.

I used to be a Leupold man for varmint Sakos when I couldn't afford the S or Z brands, but they got so pricey that I started checking out other good but more cost effective scopes. I can't tolerate junk budget stuff that edge distorts, looks hazy, and adjustments won't allow repeatable walking around a target.

If my book series goes into a television series I'll start buying Swarovski and other top echelon glass, until then.....

Well, I decided to sell the Leupold and replace it with a Super Sniper SS20X42. I've been reading the rave reviews about how this scope is built far better than its prices suggests, and I have to now agree. This scope just plain rocks!

My buddy and I took our rifles to the range today to get the Super Sniper zeroed and to compare the optics to his Bushnell Elite 6500. We both agreed that the Super Sniper could discern more detail on the targets than the Leupold. The SS20X42 could clearly make out lettering that the Bushnell showed as illegible blurs.

After firing 5 bore sighting and zeroing shots, I went on to fire the only group of the day... We both had to get back to family events for the holidays. Below is the 100-yard 5 shot group that measured an awesome 0.256 MOA.

Nice shooting. I have the same rifle and get very impressive results with 168 gr or heavier bullets. My rifle either will not stabilize 155 gr, bullets or I have not stumbled onto the right load.

The Federal ammo you are shooting is some really good stuff.

Merry Christmas!!

You're very wise in wanting to know where the first shot from a cold clean barrel is going. In a real-world scenario, either police work or hunting, that's the shot that matters. One single well placed shot has ended many hunts, and (regrettably) many police incidents.

Yeah, it's fun to try to place a number of shots into one tiny hole in a far away target, but it's critical to know where that first shot will fall.

Good shooting, and wear that Remington well.

Oh, and Merry Christmas.

I tend to agree with the first shot theory. When I worked up loads for groundhog hunting, I looked for groups first.

Once I got decent groups, I got a very good zero.

After that, it was back to the range for a single cold bore shot and sight adjustment. The ideal situation was very little to no change from the cold bore shot.

That first shot either hit or missed the groundhog and unless the hog was really far away, you would not get another shot that day.

Truth be told, I kind of prefer shooting a slightly fouled bore. The engineer inside can't seem to grasp that fact. . .so I clean my guns knowing full well it will not shoot as well as it will when it is fouled.

I just hate to put a gun away with a dirty bore.

700 Police .338 Lapua

Hello all!

Love the dime shooting stuff...

I'm gonna have to give that a try at my local range!

I have an advanced case of rifle lust over a Rem 700 Police .338 Lapua.

I am a racing engineer and as such...a performance freak...if I'm gonna have a long range rifle...I'm gonna have a LOOOONNNNG range rifle...anybody here have any experience with the beastie?

BTW...I know ammo is expensive even though I'm a reloader... ;)

The weather finally broke here in Northern Indiana, so I took advantage of it after work today. I headed to the range to with the goal of finally testing the precision of my 700P, which just received a new bedding job, and of course the new SS20x42 scope. The results were nothing short of spectacular! I only had time for a single 5-shot group before heading home for dinner, but the result was a personal best (5-shot)! My previous best 5-shot group at 100 yards was a cluster that measured .230 MOA... This masterpiece was a minuscule 0.191" CTC or 0.182 MOA!!!

To say the least, I am very pleased with both my rifle and scope. For just a little more than a grand, I have a rig that shoots as well of better than many custom rigs that cost many time more. Now I just need to find a range that will let this rig stretch its legs.

Welcome to Spring folks!

It was such a nice day today that I decided to head to the range after work this evening. I wanted to really get the feel of my Remmy now that it has been skim-bedded and the new Weaver Tactical 3-15x50 FFP has been mounted. I can only say that I am even more pleased than I was last fall.

Instead of working on the ultimate groups, I decided that I would try something a little different. (OK. So there is one group) I made up some pretty unique "hostage" targets that give the shooter less than a dime's worth of area to hit. Below are the results at 100 yards:
