KaMaKaZe, thanks for your comments. I tend to agree with you that the security gate ... if you've read some of my other posts with regard to this community that I moved into (follow the links in the opening post), you'll see that I'm less than happy with everything that is going on and the security gate is just the latest in a long list.
We live in a sort of out of the way community and EVERYTHING closes up around 10/11PM. All of the local gas stations, supermarkets, etc. were closed and the nearest open one was in one the nearby towns. This meant that I would have had to drive along a dark, empty road to get there. If they were planning on jumping us, that would have been the perfect place to do it with nobody around for miles.
If I didn't have my wife & child in the car, I think that I would have done that in order to lead them away from my house but with the wife & baby in the car, it became a different ball game. I didn't like leading them to my house but I felt that if something was going to happen, I would rather have it be on my home turf where I could get my family into the house and maybe get to my more powerful firearms that I had inside.
Your comment about driving around the neighborhood longer was a good one but something that I didn't think of at the time. I don't think that they were following me personally as we haven't lived in this state long enough to make an enimies yet -- I think that they were more interested in the car as it is only a few months old. Regards, FUD.
