I know I bought Cheap Ammo, but Come On?

So I was was looking for some 22LR, for my new Ruger MKIII, hard to find here in Florida. I was traveling on business to another city here in Florida, and I went into a Bass Pro, and found some Winchester Xpert Ammunition 22 Long Rifle High Velocity 36 Grain Lead Hollow Point Box of 500. So I purchased two boxes... at $20 bucks each.

Well I got home opened the box to look at it and found most of the bullets are loose, I'm sure I could pull them out by hand...

I called Bass Pro and they said they couldn't take them back. due to Federal Regs about returning ammunition... Which is understandable to me...

So now I have 1000 rounds, which appears to me to be crappy ammo, I will call Winchester on Monday, but any other suggestions first?

Thank you in advance!
:)

Bummer, if in doubt, take them to your local shop and ask them if it's safe to shoot. When possible, I buy the Federal bulk pack.

Okay, does this mean if you were to grab the lead in one hand and the casing in the other that you could separate them with an easy pull?

Ummm... So what was the problem? Fail to feed, fire, extract, or what?

W_houle, Uh not to be a wise guy, but since you asked, I'm not keen on putting ammo in my pistol, that might jam it up. I think if ammo was supposed to have loose bullets, all the manufacturers would be making it that way....

Thank you for your question...

remington golden bullet hp heads jiggle. it doesnt cause them to FTF FTE FTL. give your ammo a try. its how theyre supposed to be

*edit* my bullets dont jiggle, im just able to rotate the cap on mine

I have a box a those winchester experts and some of the ones i have are loose and they shoot just fine out of my mossberg model 341 .22

I know you said 22LR is hard to find in your area but, if you can find it, go with the Federal bulk packs. My MKIII Hunter loves the stuff and I've heard many, many other MKIII owners say the same. Win or Rem either one gives my gun some problems but the Federal is pretty much flawless.

One of the reasons I gave up on .22lr bulk packs of all brands a long time ago and just stick with Mini-Mags in the semi-autos and Wolf Target Match in the bolt action.

Hand-cycling rimfire ammunition in a semi-auto is probably not a particularly great idea unless you are working with a safe backstop.

I'd try shooting the ammunition. I can't think of a really good reason that it would do anything other than cause jams.

By the way, you might be surprised how hard it would be to pull one of those bullets. Just because they feel loose doesn't mean they are going to come out easily. Pull one out and you'll see what I mean.

Load 'em and shoot 'em. .22lr is a heeled bullet and I don't think they'll pull out of the crimped cases as easy as you are imagining. They certainly won't push in since the bullet OD is the same as the case OD. The fact that you can spin the bullet in the case means very little.

Hand cycling in your MKIII really doesn't tell you much.

Thanks guys, I agree hand cycling doesnt tell you much... I will go shoot some see what happens... Just neve had ammo before where the bullets moved in the case... lol

I'm not saying that they should be loose, that's clearly not the ideal. I just don't think it will make any practical difference when you shoot them.

I bought some of that stuff recently and it's, by far, the worst .22LR ammo I've ever seen. I was amazed since it's Winchester brand and that used to mean something. At any rate, good luck because the only firearms I have that will shoot it are bolt rifles and revolvers.

Agree with one other thing someone said - my MK III loves Federal.

Cheers,
Oly
