I just bought a Dan Wesson

Check your cylinders for and aft movement to see how much wiggle it has.

The cylinder locks up tight. I actually took a revolver apart, when I got it, cleaned inside and re-olied. The lock up seems to dead tight back and force and with a very little play side to side. But what is "aft" ? What part of a revolver is it?

The little nubbin sticking out of the bottom front of the side plate. Its function is to stop the cylinder from simply falling off the back of its axle pin when the gun is broken open!
AKA "the blunt end" of a boat.:D

Ok... sorry for being stupid, but if "it's a little nubbin sticking out of the bottom front of the side plate" how could there be any "aft movement"? It's a solid part of the frame, isn't it? Thanks.

P.S. Oh, I think I got it... it refers to the cylinder... the back and force movement of the cylinder on the shaft when it's open, right?! :D

Open, when it is between the front of the crane & the front face of the cylinder stop (correct part name for the nubbin), or between the crane & the ball detent lock in the frame if closed. Its posible, but unlikley, that the screw inside the frame has backed off a little & allowed more room between the ball & the detent in the rear center of the cylinder.

Meanwhile on the topic of fiber opotic sights a bit more info & a pic I found for you:

Williams Fire Sight # for the Ruger GP-100 sight is 70958 at Williams, the MidwayUSA # for the springs is 423309. Midway had the Williams #70958 set on sale for $41.49! It is interchangable with the DW rearsight, the front is the direct replacment EWK version.

Not my picture, someone else’s but you can see the new sight setup well in it.

Aid_Adim Yep , you got it, its the front to rear movement of the cylinder.

wogpotter Glad to know about there rear sight. That would look real nice on a few of mine.

My little group of dw's. A 44 , 2-357's and a .22lr

Congrat's on your first Dan Wesson!

Here is my little collection. .22, 357 SuperMag, 44 Mag and 445 Super Mag.
All Monson guns. The three Stainless guns I bought new in the 80's the 445 may have been very late 80's or 1990 I cant remember, any ways I shot IHMSA also, with the three stainless guns. Don't pick on Old Stoney, Dan Wesson had there share of troubles back then, I never had seen any parts break though but my .22 had the roughest refiling I have yet seen, the 357 SM had to go back for a new cylinder stop fitment, the cylinder would occasionally counter rotate on recoil and the 445 SM went back to have the barrel shroud squared with the receiver. Dan Wesson corrected all problems and then some and these three will probably be buried with me! I have never found a a more accurate double action revolver/s.
The Blue 44 Mag I snagged last year and have yet to shoot it, it's a beauty and as far as I can tell has never been shot, I really need to see how she shoots, soon!

Hey Old Smokey and saleen322, we may have shot the same line together at some point? This picture was taken at I believe the 87 International's in Idaho, I placed in three classes that year, here is Elgin giving me one of the trophy's.

Cool collection! ;)

I've had my first "accident" with my DW today. I put about 70 or 80 rounds of 38 Special through it and then started shooting Magnums. After about 15 rounds my cylinder got jammed. I had to force it open and left the gun alone switching to another gun. I am not sure what happened, but I have a feeling I made a gap to tiny when I put the barrel on. Still pretty interesting...

Im sure the gap is to small.

I think I have mine just over the recommended that way it doesn't bind or make DA any heavier.

aid You also did not say you cleaned the chambers after shooting the 38sp. The curd left behind from the shorter 38 brass can cause 357 to not seat in the chamber very well. And yes depending on ammo and cylinder gap it can tight'n up the gap even more with crud. Work at buying a basic reloaders kit and roll your own plinker loads using only 357 brass .

Salvo , we all know the Wesson years in palmer had more issues. Just like some big name brands today. And yes they fixed them. The only part that gets under my skin from any one that knocks a brand is they show up only to complain
Very nice to still find what looks to be a "new " DW like the one you picked up. Walked into a local gunshop last year and found a 375 and 445 supermag sitting for sale . Older shooter bought them for matchs , had a stroke and they sat for many years in his safe. Wife finally cleaned house after he passed and put them up for sale. $800 each with box's and all the goodies. I could not justify owning any more revolvers and posted on most forums about them. They are still around but harder to find.

Still got that hair today?? Mine is leaveing me. .

Theres definitely a technique for setting the gap.
Put the feeler gauge in between the partially screwed in barrel & close the cylinder on it. While wiggling the gauge slightly slowly turn the barrel in until you just feel it touch. (Any more is too much as you're unwittingly forcing the spring-loaded rear ball backwards reducing the gap excessively.)

To keep the gap either leave the feeler in position while you drop on the slide & tighten the nut, or remove the feeler, open the cylinder & push up on the forcing cone with a finger while dropping on the shroud & tightening the nut.

Either will help prevent the actual barrel from turning inside the shroud while tightening the nut. Do check the gap again after you've finished tightening. The feeler should slide with minimum resistance.:)

Thanks for the tip! I think this is what happened: first I made the gap too tight and then as kahrguy said - I did not clean chambers after 38 rounds. So, the two factors added to each other could cause an issue. Will be more careful next time.

kahrguy, I still have my hair, my forehead is a little taller though!
That 375 SM sure was a nice find! Wonder who got it.

Yea got the forhead bit. Ha . I still have mine it just a weee bit thinner in front, and back. Wife say more hair is growing ever where else.

wogpotter than a very nice sight picture you have there. Hard to miss those .
