I still may get one just to cover my butt while camping, etc. The laws here in GA can be pretty confusing about who is allowed to carry where in the great outdoors without a CWL.
Doctor, allow me to clear it up for you.
In Georgia, the license granted to permit firearm carry by non-enumerated individuals is called a
Georgia
Firearms
License; or GFL. You may have noticed that the word "concealed" does not appear in its title. That is because in Georgia, there is no requirement that a licensee carry his or her weapon concealed. Further, without a GFL, a person knowingly carrying a firearm on their person may be charged with one or two crimes: Carrying a pistol without a license, which is a misdemeanor the first time and a felony the second, or Carrying a concealed weapon in addition to carrying without a license, which also is a misdemeanor for the first offense and a felony for the second. If you carry a firearm in a state park or wildlife management area without a GFL then there are additional charges for those specific transgressions that may be levied.
Now as far as where you can carry as a GFL holder while recreating outdoors, you must avoid:
1) Any areas managed by the Army Corps of Engineers. This is true anywhere in the country but GA has a number of lakes that are considered ACoE property, such as Lake Lanier and Allatoona Lake. Here is a
map of Corps managed property for reference.
2) Any parks or monuments controlled by the National Park Service or Federal Wildlife Refuges, thanks to the recent ruling by the federal district court after BHO took office. Again, this is true for licensed gun toters in all states. The list of NPS areas can be found
here. Federal Wildlife Service areas are
over here.
And that's about it. It really is quite simple to determine where NOT to be in Georgia while packing legally: on Federal ACoE, NPS, or FWS property. USDA Forest Service (National Forests) properties permit firearm carry with a GFL.
If you'd like citations for any of the statutes that I've referred to, please don't hesitate to ask via PM. I also invite you to inquire about the process and any other questions you may have involving firearm carry in Georgia.
