Gun stores are worse than pawn shops or car dealers, their trade offers are a joke. Everyone advising you to sell privately is 100% correct.

What's the problem with the grip safety? Do you even notice it while shooting? I don't on my XD40 Sub Compact, or on my 1911 based pistols.

I have the XDS 9 3.3". I have a Kahr P40 DLC w/ night sights. I have shot the Sheild 40.

Given a pure choice, I would get the Kahr, I think, but it is close to the XDS. If I had the XDS 9, I would not trade to the Kahr. I would just learn it....too much trouble switching and I like the grip safety. It is integral to my technique.

Why don't you like the grip safety?

You might try a PRP or Gallowey kit to improve your XDS trigger, if that is an issue to you.

BTW, I consider both the Kahr and the XDS to be great guns with a slight edge to the Kahr, but the XDS's grip safety makes that close...

When I was looking for a new carry (to switch off with my revolver once in a while) - I looked at a XDS9 - what killed that one for me was the grip safety. I ended up going with the Shield 9mm and have NOT REGRETS! A great pistol that will eat anything I feed it. I'm not a big 40 fan and from what I'm seeing, quite a few get the Shield 40 and then end up getting the 9. But in the end - you have to be happy with what you end up with and YMMV. I reload so the 9 is not an issue as far as ammo for me.

I don't like the grip safety because it has to be squeezed in for the gun to function. As one poster said, it is passive and I realize that, I just don't like a safety feature that can render a gun useless if it ever breaks. Kind of like the mag safety disconnect on Ruger pistols, it damages the gun if you dry fire with the mag taken out.

"Kind of like the mag safety disconnect on Ruger pistols, it damages the gun if you dry fire with the mag taken out.". I was under the impression that you couldn't even dry fire it with no Mag at all. Doesn't it make the trigger "dead"?

Ruger pistols equipped with a mag safety disconnect can be dry fired after removing the mag. The disconnect locks the striker assembly preventing it from moving forward.

Not all Ruger pistols. For example, the LC9 and the Mk III can't be dry fired with the mag removed; on those guns the trigger won't go the rear with the magazine removed.

I would imagine that an all steel Colt 1911 would be better made than my XDS.

How are you measuring well made? The colt will look nicer, but on average, I would bet the XDS has an slight edge in reliability.

I say sell it on GB an get a Shield. Seriously, it's just an XD, not a finely tuned revolver or heirloom handgun. Worst case you decide you can't live without it and buy another, and lose a few bucks in the process. At least you'd have attempted to find something that will fit your needs rather than 'deal with it' and never practice or carry it (I assume this is your carry piece).

Not sure if you've already addressed, but if you are wanting to move up a caliber I would go with the Glock 27. I am not a Kahr fan: I have owned four and none of them was reliable enough to be a carry gun, even after hundreds of rounds. WAY too finicky.

I have a Shield 9mm, and it's excellent, and Smith provides the best service in the industry if there are problems (none with the Shield I note). I would just not be sure of the felt recoil in a Shield .40, not sure you would like it. Make certain of that before going in that direction.

I would put all three on par for quality, givem that try to shoot them all. Go for what you shoot best. As stated above the kahrs do tend to need a tad more break in but I trust my life with mine.

I would vote keep the XDS but not because I prefer it over the other two choices. It's just that in a trade you will be lucky to get $200 for the used piece and for that $200 I would just keep it and buy another. And then another.

I have plenty of firearms that were once my favorite but are no longer even in my top five or six. Still doesn't hurt my feelings to have them. I have only traded one firearm and sold one firearm. I don't plan to go down either of those roads again unless I absolutely have to. In the long run you will be glad you still have your XDS. As always, just my opinion.
