Hunting bear with an Ak-47?

I would just like to know where your grenade would be, cuz that would handle the bear no problem, or a stick of tnt would work too, but the grenade would look better when on your vest next to your slung AK just my opinion :D

I know of several folks who carry Kel Tec .223 pistols with 30 round mags for bear protection while packing meat.

I know of several women who carry folding stock AKs for bear protection. The 7.62x39 round will penetrate deeper than any pistol round and has more muzzle energy, you have 30 rounds, and it is more compact than a shotgun thus easier for a small framed person to use.

A NFA Krink would be ideal as bear protection.

Actually, the 7.62x39mm does not have more muzzle energy nor will it outpenetrate any pistol...
7.62x39, 150 gr bullet, 2129fps=1600'#'s (this was the heaviest bullet at the highest velocity listed)
500 S&W mag., 440 gr bullet, 1654 fps=2673'#'s (my pet load)

(Hodgedon reloading data)

I also doubt that a huge magazine will be of benifit because you'll be lucky to get more than one shot anyway.

Cute post though

Thank you...anytime you want to do penetration tests let me know...

The average person would be better off with a AK than a 500 S&W for bear protection. Logic dictates no other answer.

Superdave,

This is all about choices. Now, in our neck of the woods, the AK will do the trick against the black bear with no problem. I know of a guy that killed one with a .22 rifle but he wasn't too happy when the fish and wildlife people got through with him.

If an AK was the only rifle I had then my family and I wouldn't be in a cabin in grizzly country. There is no question that the 7.62X39 will kill a grizzly. The question is whether the rounds will kill a grizzly in time to do any good for your family or you.

I like better answers myself. When my family or I venture into grizzly territory it will be with a rifle chambered in a round that will do the job with one round. Every time with correct bullet placement. You don't need a 30 round magazine. It's doubtful you could get through a 30 round magazine on full auto while simultaneously hitting the target.

Simple answer. When you venture into areas where there is dangerous game...don't go without tools that will do the jobs necessary.

I've killed big game with 7.62X39. One shot kills. Dead right there. It wasn't dangerous game, though. Whole different league.

Logic?

Wild AK, please explain the logic to me. Is there something I'm missing? You made an earlier statement based on energy and penetration... I'll gladly meet you at the snowshoe gun club in Kenai if you have some ballistics jelly stuff (or better yet, a real live bear;), Devils pass trailhead is about as close to Anchorage as I can bring myself to go.

The 7.62x39 as stated will kill a bear but think on this. I have seen a grizzly bear take a 7mm mag thru the heart a still make a hundred yards before dropping:eek:, but have seen them drop in their tracks with the same shot:)
The full metal jacket would do best if you hit him in the spine or central nervous system other wise you will be looking at a pencil sized hole and thats about it, which will realy make him mad and that you do not want. If that is all you have it would be better than a sharp stick just make sure your aim is true or you may not live to regret it. I have hunted bear with a 30-30 before but, as stated above make sure of where you hit him.

A follow up shot after bad hit with a .416 Rigby bolt action is gonna take time, a double rifle not so. But by the time someone with a bolt gun cycles the action of their heavy cumbersome elephant gun, any person with an AK could have fired off at least 8 decently aimed rounds from a 30-round magazine. Time is of the essence regarding a charging griz, they are fast.

follow up shot?

Ha! most bear charges are initiated at such close range that there may not even be time for one shot. Imagine something moving 35 mph toward you from less than 50 yds away... That gives you less than three seconds to unsling your rifle, put one in the chamber, take the safety off, aim and fire at a target that is uncooperative to say the least. How much do we practice this? Me personally, not quite as much as I should, but I do practice it at least once per range session. Secondly, 7.62x39 does not have the bullet weight to penetrate very deeply, especially given its moderate velocity. I have never met a bear guide who carries one; I work with a former bear guide and posed this question to him and he just chuckled. If you are fighting a guerilla war, or just like to blast for the fun of it an AK-47 is a fine choice. If you are packin for bear go loaded for bear.

Until Super-Dave tells us he's talking about great ol' big monster bears, bigger'n WildAlaska and Wyobohunter put together, doubled and re-doubled, verily like unto a hand of Bridge, let's stay with Florida-sized sorta-little bears, okay? And there ain't many Biggies in the Appalachicola National Forest...

If I was on a fishing trip camping in a one story cabin out in the northwest, and a starving grizzly bears attacks my cabin and begins to tear through the walls.

there's your answer

An AK with the right ammo is quite sufficient for eastern black bear. No need for 30 round magazines either.

As I mentioned earlier, a black bear was killed here in Waynesboro years ago by some doofus with a .22. He shot the bear nineteen times but I think that was either poor shot placement, an abundance of enthusiasm, or both.

Seeing as how this county has no open season on black bear, the shooter was quite upset about the reaction of the fish and wildlife people. Not to mention quite a bit poorer.

Where bear don't break 300 lbs, an AK with 150-grain SP should be just fine.

Big black bear, and all Griz, Brown, and Polar, would require a bit more margin for comfort. It still may be years before I make it to Alaska, but when I do, I plan on carrying one of my .35 Whelens or a Brenneke-loaded Mossberg 500. Hell, years ago I tried to convince Randy Garrett to load some of his .45/70 bullets in a shotgun shell for Joe Sixpack, but he wasn't interested. :( Fortunately, there are lots of recent slugs that would work fine.

Superdave ,
I just noticed you were hoping to trade a shotgun, pistols, a great dane, a pitbull, and a porno collection for an AK-47. I would assume this means you don't have an AK now.

If I were worried about being attacked in "grizzly bear country" as you have said. I would keep your shotguns, pistols great danes and pitbulls and sleep peacefully at night.

If all of that fails throw your porno collection at him!

Ok, since we are playing.... a real AK (military with select fire). 30 rnd mag loaded with fmj. Switch to auto and let her rip! Should be able to slow him down quite a bit.

By the way, be careful not to slip and fall on all the spent cases.
