follow up shot?
Ha! most bear charges are initiated at such close range that there may not even be time for one shot. Imagine something moving 35 mph toward you from less than 50 yds away... That gives you less than three seconds to unsling your rifle, put one in the chamber, take the safety off, aim and fire at a target that is uncooperative to say the least. How much do we practice this? Me personally, not quite as much as I should, but I do practice it at least once per range session. Secondly, 7.62x39 does not have the bullet weight to penetrate very deeply, especially given its moderate velocity. I have never met a bear guide who carries one; I work with a former bear guide and posed this question to him and he just chuckled. If you are fighting a guerilla war, or just like to blast for the fun of it an AK-47 is a fine choice. If you are packin for bear go loaded for bear.
