Huntin Trucks

1985 Toyota 4WD pickup. 290K miles. I just had the running gear from a 120K-mile '85 put in; engine, trans, axles. New shocks and bushings. Grill, new windshield, paint job. I run 700x15 light truck mud/snow tires. Go most anywhere, these last 22 years. Lots of places the Long&Fat trucks can't go.

while not a hunting truck, I found out that I could do a lot better vehicle wise with a 2wd truck and a Nice 4x4 atv...

the 7K spent on the atv would more than offset the cost of adding 4wd & maintenance on the truck..easier to go in more places, & I don't have to worry about tearing the truck up..easier to get un stuck as well..

only took me 5 4x4 trucks to figure out..
past trucks were 73 chevy K2500, suzuki jeep, 78 K3000 dually, 79 F150, 88 ranger, 2wd were 86 ranger, 99 c 2500, 99 surburban..

not knocking another's choice, but having done it before, just prefer the atv route now..

your milage may vary..

My daily drive in the Rockies - 2001 Toyota 4-runner - 13" of ground clearance, solid axles... it can go in some scary terrain. Sure, it's got some "Colorado Pinstripes" down the side, but it's about function for me...
By the way, nice trucks, fellas.

2003 Ford Excursion 4X4 turbodiesel. Lifted with 315/70/R16 Geolandar tires. It goes everywhere my F-350 went. I hunt California, Nevada and Arizona. I beach camp and fish all up and down Baja with it. It holds 44 gallons of Diesel Fuel so I get lots of range out of it. I average 15 MPG...

Sako Finnwolf 243

Jseime, I saw in one of your old posts that you were looking for a Sako Finnwolf in 243. Well, if you haven't found one, I may have exactly what you are looking for. NIB, yep that's what I said - new in box - that I got in my father's collection when he passed away. While no man can truly have too many guns, I now have more than I need. I shoot a Sako Finbear Deluxe L61 in 270 and, it is a real tack driver. I had to buy one just like it for my son so he would stop drooling over mine. The Finnbear should go to someone like yourself who really appreciates the gun.

Very fortuitous and thoughtful of you; If Jseime doesn't want it, I sure might; if so, PM me please. :)

Edit: Oops, nevermind. I did some research, and no way I can afford of those beauties.

I just traded my 1991 Toyota 4Runner for a 2007 Toyota 4Runner. Very nice, comfortable. Haven't had it off-road yet, but this fall I'll be hunting pigs in California, so I'll see how it looks caked with mud and blood.:)

When I hear hunting truck I think of a 4x4 that your not afraid to rub against a tree.
I had a 79 bronco that was a nice trail rig (lockers,35's etc.) but now I got a quad and a gas friendly little truck.
They are more for trail riding and fun than hunting thow

This older '91 Ford E-150 van still runs great with 165,000 miles on motor but tranny was replaced last year. Limited slip rear end and Blizzack snow tires all around will take me anywhere I need to go. I've hauled many animals in a trailer pulled behind.

Rear seat tuns into a good bed, my own cabin on wheels!

The 5.0L V-8 delivers 15 mpg tank to tank which is not great but she's paid for and insuarnce is cheap because of the age.

Ford makes 'em right.

Currently my only truck is a 93 dodge dakota 2wd v8 extended cab. I take it in as far as I need to then use my trusty ol legs for the rough terrain. :)
I used to do a little 4 wheelin and wish I still had all or one of the following I have sold over the years......
77 jeep j20 4x4 4"lift 401 twister
77 chevy 1/2 ton short box 4x4 4" lift built small block (pretty silver truck)
91 toyota 4x4 4" rancho suspension 22re (took this one hunting quite a bit)
and my old favorite go anywhere power house 76 chevy 3/4 ton long bed 8" lift 40" ground hog mudders, push bumper, ho 350ci. That was a fun truck.
but now I have a house and a family so toys are all gone for now. :)

As much as I would love that rifle the combination of that truck in the first post of this thread and a student loan and various other bills I'm stuck shootin what I already have... for the forseeable future, thank goodness I have that new .270 RugerM77 that I bought last summer.

Not a half bad little plan, Jack. No need for a tent or other camper. But when I camp, I usually sleep in the bed of my pickup under the camper shell, or as Iowans call it, a "topper". I can throw deer in there too without messing up and carpet or upholstery.

Here is mine. 76 Bronco, 351W, Edlbrock 4bbl, NP435 trans, 3.73 gears, detroit locker rear, lockright front, full cage, 12,000lb winch with receiver mount and receivers front and rear.

I have two...

One is for the off road track. The south Texas ranch I hunt at requires traversing a 1000 acre ranch to get to. If it's raining, you need the 4x4...
68 Bronco.

For my Uncle's 84 acre ranchette in the hill country, it's the tahoe. I usually drive in the night before and set it up. Sleep in the back, then crawl up top in the morning. It works believe it or not. 3/4 thick plywood on top. I pull it up underneath a tree.

Here is mine. It's a 93 Toyota 4x4, 4cyl, 5 speed, manual lockouts, 31-10.50 Wild Country tires on 10" Cragars wheels. She has got 130K miles so it's just now getting out of the Toyota break in period.:D This old mule will go wherever you point the tires and with no worries considering it has full factory skid plates and recovery hooks.
