HUGE Snubbies?

I just read a bit of advertising for the Ruger Alaskan 454 Casull factory snub. My thoughts began to run with a odd wonder. Does anybody collect these monster snubs? I guess Ruger, S&W and Taurus all make a large caliber snub. Are they concealable in reality? I guess Lew Horton may have started something. Large caliber, large size, is there a large market for these hand Howitzers?
 
Super snubbies have been around for over a century. The Royal Irish Constabulary .455 comes to mind. After WWI surplus Colt and S&W .45 ACP revolvers were cut down to short barrels, Chick Gaylord of NY comes to mind.

Who confesses he once owned a Charter Arms Bulldog .44 special, 3.5" with Pachmeyer grips it would erase your fingerprints. :cool:
 
There must be a pretty good market....I'm always lookin', but I don't find many in my area. So far, the only thing I have in this category is a .44 Special 696, but it's given me the itch for a few more. Big bores are COOL! :cool:

I saw one of the S&W 325PD's the other day....that titanium/scandium .45 ACP N-frame snubbie. It had me tinglin', but the $750 price tag scared me off. :eek:

The number after the "dash" in Smith revolver names is the like the version number on a piece of software.

First, there was the 27. When they changed the ejector rod from right-hand to left-hand threads, it became the 27-1. When they changed the cylinder stop and eliminated the triggerguard screw, it became the 27-2. And so on... :)
 
Huge snubbies kinda look like toys because of their size, I'm not saying they are because they're not. I think they're more for collecting than anything else. I would like to shoot some of these pocket cannons to see how they handle!

A 3"-barrelled N-frame is easier to carry OWB because it has less barrel dangling below the belt line than a gun with a 4" or longer tube. It doesn't get in the way as much, and is less likely to peek out from under a covering garment. Plus, there are very few handguns with as much, well, presence as a big-bore revolver. If compliance is an issue, a Glock or SIG may get mistaken for an airsoft, but a 3" 629 is most definitely A Gun. ;)
 
I have large hands and like N-frames since there's room to fit both hands around them.
I have two 629's in 3 inch and can shoot them pretty well, something I could never do with a J, K or Colt snubbie.
I carry mine in a pancake holster hunting and occassionally concealed carry.
No doubt I'll be picking up other large snubbies in the future.
 
I went and looked at the 45 ACP snubbie that Joe Hatley showed us. That is a cool Frankenstein revolver. I just couldn't accept the "look" of it. I kept hearing Johnny Cash singing about a Cadillac. LOL I am looking into a couple of M-19 357 Magnums to start with. A 2.5" and a 4". I will crawl before I walk tall. A M57 2.5" 41 Magnum is on my list!
 
In a magnum chambering, they define pointless (unless the point is to start forest fires with the muzzle blast). ;) In something like .45acp, .44 spec, or even .45 colt perhaps, they make a nice carry gun or snake gun. In any event, fun. :)

Not so. A 125gr .357 Magnum load hits the forcing cone going faster than a 125gr .38 Spl +P+ exits a 4" tube...
 
Tamara. you are correct. I SHOULD have said; two M57s, one 4.125" barrel and one 6" barrel. The snub I was thinking of was the 3" 44 Magnum. Sorry for the confusion.

Here you go: A heavily-customized Model 57 that started life as an innocent 6" square-butt gun. :)

Thanks! I like that. Quite a few E TN LEOs used to pack M57s back in the 60s. The THP was running 2-door Ford 429s and life was good. I still remember the early morning fog on 22. That picture brings back many memories.
 
325 PD pocket holster
