Hello, I am new to reloading ammo. Currently I only reload 12 gauge shells for personal use. In the future I want to also reload my 223/556 and 9mm ammo. But for now it seemed like the cheapest way to get into it was to start with the reloading shot gun shells. I’m not even sure if that is really considered reloading.
I started with the basics of course, birdshot, buckshot, and slugs. Then I got into the fun, specialty stuff. Bird, buck, and slug in one shell, Expanding slugs, long distance slugs, etc…
I recently started getting into the pyrotechnic type rounds. I purchased some Dragon’s Breath. Now before all the negative comments, I realize this is not a tactical load. It really is just for fun and you have to be careful. It also does do some damage to shotgun barrel. I get all that but it’s fun to shoot. And I shoot for fun. And if my barrel get too damaged I’ll buy another. Originally I wanted to make my own loads because they cost $6 a shell and up if you order them from the Internet.
I have tried to load some of my own Dragon’s Breath with little to no success. I have taken a Dragon’s Breath shell I purchased, opened it up to see what is in side, and have reloaded it into one of my hulls with my powder and it works fine. But for the life of me I cannot find out what they put in it. I have ready on many forums that they use Magnesium. The shell I opened had a darkish chips of some type of metal. But I have tried magnesium, magnesium powder, chips, and even shavings. All it does is make a quick bright flash at the end of the barrel. I have tried other stuff as well like Aluminum Powder and chips, Barium, etc.. I have spent about $100 different metals trying to make Dragon’s Breath. Let me tell you they either don’t use Magnesium, or they mix/coat it with something.
Does anyone have any idea how to make a Dragon’s Breath shell? What is used to make the sparks/flash? At this point I’m determined and want to just figure this out so I can move on to something else, like reloading some brass.
Thank you in advance for any help or ideas.
