How Much is YOUR Life Worth?

Cost does equal quality. But, you only need so much quality for a gun to be 100% reliable. Any more quality than that and you have crossed over into the realm of "art".

Like others have said, cost generally equals more features or higher quality in general. Yes, I have seen exceptions.

Like the Helmet analogy, the $700 helmet looks like a racers, has all these slick vents and visor movements and it is way quieter than the $70 helmet. In a crash both are DOT Snell approved and both protect your head. But you wear the thing for years and hopefully that is never tested. But you do benefit from the vents, quietness and quality visor action every time you ride. But if you cannot afford or can justify $700 you buy the $150 helmet which is nice enough and call it day.

Same with most guns. Most real manufacturers have guns that work. But the $800 gun is lighter and smaller than the $90 gun. You get more accuracy, better ergos and maybe more accessories. But if all you can afford is the $90 used gun, it is better than a potato peeler... :p

I have seen some guys just drilling the X at 14 yards with junk guns and guys with high dollar guns spraying bullets all over the place. Just learn how to shoot your gun better and not worry if it is listed as awesome gun somewhere and you will be better served.

Sorry, Bud, but this,
Considering how few CZ's are actually sold vs how many end up in for repairs
, seemed to me to be X - Y = Z, where he had to know the values of X and Y to be able to pontificate the value of Z.

Alpha, you are right, have seen guys with guns most people wouldn't touch doing quite well at the range, and then again saw people with $1K+ guns who were almost dangerously inaccurate - but often.

Yeah, but he didn't ever "pontificated" a value. He inferred a relationship
Considering how few CZ's are actually sold vs how many end up in for repairs means a high percentage are causing problems.
and drew a conclusion based on the assumption his inference was correct. All without actual values.

He is guessing and you took the bait. I am just making a point about a how a discussion can heat up where it shouldn't.

Back on topic ...

I've had the "What is your life worth?" and "You get what you pay for." line thrown at me in gun shops and on gun forums. I tend to ignore those people right away.

Do some research on the particular firearm your interested in, educate yourself on the quality, read some legitimate reviews from owners and base your decision off your own knowledge. A local gunsmith may or may not be a hack with a Dremel tool in the back room.

My LGS "gunsmith" insisted he look at a Colt 1903 I had problems with after shooting at their range. He wanted to see it since he overheard me talking to the counter guys about it. I let him look it over for amuesment but I knew a simple spring change would fix it. He comes back out after awhile and tells me my firing pin was broken in 2 pieces (2 pieces is normal) and that he can make me a new one for $25.

I went home, changed the springs and it fixed the problem. CZ makes excellent firearms and I wouldn't take anything your local "smith" is saying to heart.

You don't need a wonder keyboard, just one that works.

I've been looking for a "wonder keyboard" for years now - would pay extra for one that has more positive feedback in the keys - can't find one.:( How is this gun related???? I'd use it to talk guns to all of you folks.:)

I'm not sure if I'm a gun snob or not. I own Rugers (3), a S & W, a Kimber, a Sig and now a recently purchased Springfield EMP. My point is I buy what I perceive to be as quality firearms. I look at fit, finish, how they fit my hand (wifes also), ease of operation, reliability, and style. I don't buy alot, maybe 1 a year. So I tend buy the best I can afford! They all are great guns, they all function flawlessly and all are fun to shoot. So I'm a happy man with my purchases. I don't think my buying habits will change soon.
Snob ? I don't know. I do know what I like though. I would never slam anybodys firearm as its all up to the indiviual. Just my thoughts on this matter. Hopefully I didn't ramble too much.

Just for the record I've owned a couple of Taurus's, a High Standard, a Bulldog 44 spl, a early model Ruger P85 and a Glock. With the exception of the Glock wasn't too impressed with the quality of the handgun. The Glock was my problem, couldn't get pass the look. In fact 3 years ago I finally tried another Ruger semi in a MK III (love this gun), to me Ruger stands for GREAT wheel gun.
So snob or what, I don't know. As stated before I just know what I like, no excuses! Its always an individual thing. Maybe there is no wrong answer or thoughts here! :)

"How much is your life worth?"

"I'm not really sure, but apparently feeling like you're better than everyone else is worth about $549."

People use that excuse all the time as a justification to buy expensive guns. The truth is, many cheap reliable guns are out there. There's no need to spend 1000 bucks on a pistol because you think the price tag is linearly related to life saving ability. Sure, it may have a softer trigger and better sights, but that doesn't mean lesser sights and triggers are rendered moot.

That's the beauty of this country, you buy what you like, and I buy what I like. Neither one of us has to justify or answer to anyone but our selves. I'm happy with my choice of firearms, quite happy in fact. They do just what I expect of them. I can't ask anymore than that.;)

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against nice guns. A Colt 1911 is on my short list, but I don't pretend that the extra money for the Colt is going to directly translate into lower odds of getting shot by some thug.

"The truth is, many cheap reliable guns are out there."

There are lots of cheap, reliable cars out there too, but I'm not buying any more of them either. As with guns, I've done my time and had my fill and some are still taking up space in the safe. But if I don't buy them then there are just more for everybody else.

Somebody has to buy expensive new guns if there's going to be a steady supply of nice used guns, right?

"I don't pretend that the extra money for the Colt is going to directly translate into lower odds of getting shot by some thug"

Who believes that, the people who think their Superman underwear is going to keep the bad guys away?
