How much concrete to stop bullets?

Dangus: Hey, I AM a machinist! Put together all the silcon carbide, and the tungsun carbide, too, that passes through my shop and the main shop out front in the course of a year, and I doubt you could armor a broom closet. I'm not saying it isn't great stuff, but what sort of threat are we talking about? Burglars, or the Terminator carrying a mini-gun?

lol, well good point. I'm just saying if you pile up excess you have of that sort of thing you could at least save a little bit when you have to buy more....

The Bill of Rights is a document of brilliance, a document of wisdom, and it is the ultimate law, spoken or not, for the very concept of a society that holds liberty above the desire for ever greater power. -Me

Fud, are you full of poop? You're supposed to live in the SWAMP, for heaven's sake![/quote]That was my house up NORTH (where snow fell in the winter and we had changes in the seasons -- I sure miss it) before I moved about a year and a half ago. Don't have any photos of my current home (never bothered to take pictures) but if you go to Jordan's web page, you'll see a few phtotos of my house -- I would have posted them but I can't seem to find a working URL.

This started off innocently enough on my part. I thought that slabs of concrete with a diameter of 16"x24" tiled onto interior walls would actually look nice. I was then posessed by the spirit of "Tim the Toolman," and wondered how thick it would have to be to make it functional as well as nice looking. So, this is with no particular threat in mind, but a desire to kill two birds with one stone.

I have found a LOT of interesting information in this thread. The silicon carbide/clay idea is almost practical for me, if I can find some silicon carbide (what is the chemical nomeclature for that? SiCO4?)

I'd like some more information of the reinforced doors. That is something that I will definitely be doing ASAP. I'm toying with the idea of making my own, but I'd like to see what's available commerically first.

The Siberian Tigers are an inspired idea! However, I think the endangered snail in California would be easier to feed unless I get a LOT of unwanted guests. :)

Is everyone forgetting about reactive armor?

Just trowel on a layer of C4 and set up some proximity fuses. Guarranteed to defend against anything short of a nuke. Might even be hurricane resistant.

Oh. You wanted to survive the encounter.

Nevermind.

Try Ceco doors http://www.cecodoor.com/
Their ArmourShield door may not cost too much. Look in you local phone book for where to buy. I'm sure it is special ordered. MWT
