How much ammo do you keep?

I try to have at least 1,000 rounds for any working/using gun that I have. I have quite a few guns that don't see much use but I still keep a decent stockpile for them. I tend to use large GI ammo cans for most of it. I label them with masking tape and a marker for easy reference.

I don't keep much loaded centerfire ammo on-hand. But, I do keep a reasonable amount of reloading components.

At my normal rate of consumption, I have enough rifle and handgun components to last about 2-3 years. Shotgun components would last about 7-8 years.

.22 LR and .22 WMR are the only things I keep a fair amount of on-hand.
I'm somewhere around 1k rounds of .22 WMR and 9k rounds of .22 LR/.22 Short.

I can't afford to do a 2-for-1 replacement, when I shoot; but I do try to replace components or rimfire ammo with more than what I used. I may now be at a point where I can stop doing that, and just go to a one-for-one replacement.

a lot ... Johnksa said it pretty good except I moved to keeping about 2 years and then I make sure I rotate stock. This should guard against shortages and let's me be choosy on price. I also reload which gives an even bigger buffer when you count how much you can make from the reloading supplies.

I stocked up,,,

.25 ACP = 100 rounds (bench stock - I replace what I shoot asap)

.380 = 1,000 rounds (bench stock - I replace what I shoot asap)

9mm = 1,000 rounds (bench stock - I replace what I shoot asap)

.38 Special = 1,000 rounds (bench stock - I replace what I shoot asap)

.357 Mag = 500 rounds (bench stock - I replace what I shoot asap)

.44 Mag = 500 rounds (bench stock - I replace what I shoot asap)

.22 LR = 20,000 rounds (bench stock - I replace what I shoot asap)

It took quite a while to get to these levels,,,
But now that I have the bench stock I want to have on hand,,,
It's a very easy thing to replace what I shoot just from my Mad Money fund.

It's not uncommon for me to shoot a brick of .22 in one days of shooting,,,
I rarely shoot more than a half a box of centerfire at a time,,,
This ammo level is a bench stock I can maintain.

If I were you I'd have some put away that never gets touched . At least 500 rounds of every cal. you got and 1,000 plus of 22lr . Every few years rotate the ammo out for new stuff . If you keep it in a cool dry place ammo will last for many years . I had some ammo I forgot about in my basement for 17 years :eek:. I took it out a few months ago and It all worked fine with no duds it all fired . :)( 9mm & 38 spl ) . As for the way to store it . Ammo cans with good seals and thow in one of those anti moister packets . :cool:

Other than 22LR-I only keep maybe 200 to 300 rounds loaded and ready for the weekend range. I am what you would call a componet stocker:D.
I have around 5000 cases for 223 ,1500 45 ACP. 500-308. BUllets to load them all and powder and primers as well. Most of the time i run bear min through summer as i shoot to much,but build a good stock pile over winter.

For convenience and a feeling of comfort I keep about 500 rounds of each caliber I shoot, plus about 1,000 22lr, but I am thinking of stocking up on a lot more of all of it. Some think that gold is the hedge against the collapse of the dollar, but I tend to think that things like good ammo might be more valuable than gold when the SHTF. And don't forget that when the zombies start roaming the streets you will need a LOT of ammunition! As an aside, when I see a thread like this, or one of those "If you could only own x number of guns......" I think I have been participating for too long on these gun forums since the same subjects keep coming up over and over. And if I see one more "which is better, 45acp or 357mag?" type threads..........

I currently have 2000 rounds of 9mm ball, 700 rounds of .40 ball, 160 rounds of .223, and roughly 500 rounds of .22lr and a few hollowpoints of 9mm, .40 and.380 even though i dont own a .380 at this time. Good excuse to buy one!

.45 colt

Can someone chime in on this and tell me if I'm being too specific;
I was wondering why some people use the term .45 long colt, when no ammunition manufacturer uses it on the ammo boxes. I thought it was .45 colt, period! as opposed to .45 ACP. Is there a .45 short colt? How do these things get started, and shouldn't you use the term that is consistent with the manufacturers?

depends on the time of year.... I usually use my tax return to buy ammo for the upcoming season. So in Feb or march I might have several thousand rounds of each caliber. Come Sept that might only be a few hundred left.

This is changing as i start reloading more calibers.

Working toward keeping a reserve of 1000 rounds of every caliber I shoot. That covers .38SPL, 9MM, 5.56, and 12 GA.

So far I've only got it for 9MM and 5.56 but those two are what I shoot the most. 12 GA should be easy because its cheap and .38SPL, well I dont shoot it real often so I typically buy some with each range trip when I buy for others. The leftovers are kept and more is bought next time.

Every time we go to Wally's, my wife says for me to go get more ammo. It's nice to have the "bosses" blessing. I shoot a little and hoard a lot.

4000+ 22lr-various brands
1600+ 9mm-various fmj and hp
625+ 38 special-various fmj and hp
380+ .357mag-various fmj and hp
225 .223rem
150+ 20ga 7-8 birdshot
50+/- 20ga buckshot
I could get a bit more of the.38spl .223 and 20ga. but in good shape otherwise. I have enough around for target practice, plinking a few time a month as well as enough for self defense.
