How many rounds should you have stored away for a caliber?

I am amazed at the people in this thread who say they don't have the room or the money for 5K of one caliber.

I guess it is a matter of priorities.

I don't smoke.
I don't drink (much) and when I do it is at home because of the cost.
I don't screw around and have x-wives and child support.
I don't have a sports car.
I eat at home most of the time.
I don't have lots of fancy cloths.
I work hard to bring home the money.
I have been known to eat rommin noodles to save money.

When the SHTF, I plan on being ready.

You sound friendly, open-minded and easy to get along with RWblue.

My dad lives the exact same way you describe yourself as living RWblue, but he could never afford that much ammo. We all live different lives with different priorities. Let's try not to judge each other too harshly for it.

"That said, I don't need 20 cases of oil, or 50 oil filters."

You might if you had a large car collection or owned a fleet of work vehicles.

Save your money and space for shotgun and rimfire ammo. In a SHTF situation, these will be way more useful than handgun ammo. You'd be dead before you fired off 5,000 rounds from a handgun in anger.

In looking at what I have in my ammo locker I think I am SHTF OK. But that isn't why I have all of it. I just buy what I find cheap for what I shoot!
Non milsurp, not a lot except rimfire, probably 3000 rnds of 17HMR 22 Longrifle, and 22 Mag combined. 1 box 25ACP, 2 Boxes 32 ACP 100 rnds Misc. 380, 400 rnds 9X18, 1000 rnds 9X19. 700 rnds 38 spcl, 100 rnds 357 Mag 100 rnds 40 S&W 100 rds 10MM, 300 rnds 45 acp, a partial box of 44 Mag. And a few 7MM rem Mag for my deer rifle.
Surplus, and milsurp ammo. 1800 rnds of 7.62X25 cause it's cheap and I love shooting my toks and CZ52. A couple boxes of 7.62 Nagant and 32 Long for my 1895 Nagant. 3000 rnds 7.62X39. 5 SKSs and an AK to feed!. 3000rnds of 7.62X51. My L1A1 FAL could be handy in a SHTF situation. 1800 rnds of 7.62X54R. Ditto on my Dragonov plus a few Mosin-Nagants. 1000 rnds of surplus 303 British. Hey, they served the Brits well! 1500 rnds 0f 8X57. Several Mausers, and a Hakim that is hungry. Probably more I have forgotten.
All of this has been accumulated over the past few years as it became available at a good price just for fun at the range when I could get away and go shooting. I haven't been able to do a lot of shooting until a recently. I'll restock as prices permit.
No tinfoil hats, just like to shoot!!!

Muad'dib, If I sound judging, it is unintentional. I am just saying if you want it, set your priorities to get it. I am not here to tell you to "Don't buy your kids toys, because you need ammo" or "Don't go out and buy a new bass boat, because you need ammo". If you have things higher on your priority list, then that is life. I just don't want to hear people complain about the hoarders, or the lack of ammo at walmart or the ammo tax or the ....when they run out.

And I will repeat myself again. If you are buying 5K of premium ammo for yourself thinking you will shoot it in anger,--. I suggest buying 500 rounds. This way you have some rounds to rotate over the years and you will not have to retest the new ammo every 6 months or year or .... You just pull from your stash as needed. I probably have 400 round left from the premium stash of 500 rounds, I bought a couple years ago, and I did gel tests on the first 20 rounds, function test on maybe 50 rounds, then there is what I have in the mags..
