How many rounds should you have stored away for a caliber?

how much should i have stored? Idk, I keep my self defense rounds, and a box of 50 reloads at home. I make more when i plan to shoot at the range. Am I planning to get into a firefight? no. do I really need more than 50 rounds if i randomly get into a firefight at my own house? logistically speaking this is all irrational thought.
in my opinion, keep on hand what your gun will hold, an extra mag, and an extra box. i don't have enough room in my house for 5k rounds of anything. little extreme for me.
but when you reload you can always make more, so its not really a big deal for me

Use to think the same way till I was all ways running out of ammo, started buying bulk on line, can't beat the prices. So what it boils down to is how really is how much you like to shoot ? Once, twice a month or more you'll use up quiet a bit in a year, more than I first thought. Now I keep 7-10k on hand for six different guns. ;)

How much ammunition you stockpile depends on how much of a pessimist you are about the USA and the world, how much ammunition you can afford, and how much you shoot. I keep a lot of 22 rimfire around, but much less in centerfire calibers. I think the one year rule is a bit extreme unless there is a shortage. During the last shortage, for which we are just recoverying now, I must admit that I simply shot less per outing and took fewer trips to the range. My shooting proficiency certainly was affected.

I'm beginning to think less is more. Last week I found a coffee can full of .38 Spl 125gr JHPs in the back bottom shelf of my ammo cabinet. I always put a note in the can about the load, date, and # of rounds. I loaded these winter before last, stored them, and forgot adout them. I have thousands of .45ACPs, .30-06s, .223s, .357 mags, and over 13,000 rnds of .22lrs. Maybe it's time to take a break from reloading and do more shooting.

As a note:

I've never had 5,000 rounds of any single cartridge in centerfire, rifle or handgun.

I shot a lot of ammo up when I was younger, and still manage to shoot up my share. In all these years, I can't remember ever running out, or even getting very low on ammo.

I load some here, and pick up a box there. If I figure on shooting two boxes at the range, I'll buy/load three or four.

I use the same concept for other things I use. If I need to change the oil on a vehicle, I try to buy enough to do it twice. It doesn't hurt to have a few things around that you know you'll need. That said, I don't need 20 cases of oil, or 50 oil filters.

I could see 5k for a few, but not all, what would i do with 5k rounds for my 300 ultra and 38-55. And if the time came when the shooting got real bad and everyone had to bug out of their home, thier is no way I would be able to take it all anyways. I do shoot alot and have my fair shair of ammo, and componets, but in select calibers, not all of the calibers i support.

24,000 + on hand now and with roughly 5-7,000 rounds waiting for reload.
I would like to have enough ammo on hand that the concrete slab starts to sag.

One month of competition shooting will eat up 1,000 rounds if I shoot each Saturday and Sunday.

5000 rounds sounds about right to me..........just add 5000 rolls of toilet paper and 500 cans of spam and you ready for just about anything.

Yes, but if you have plenty of ammo, and cans of spam to shoot at, it might be a good idea to stock up on some food and water, also.

What, no duct tape?

Being ready for anything is the odd mix of products I saw on display at a gas station convenience store. Chap stick, leather gloves and condoms. Now you are ready for anything. ( Yikes, that's a rough crowd!! )

Most people can't afford to stash 5,000 round of pistol ammo. If the world does got weird, you probably are going to grab a rifle, carbine, or shotgun anyway.

What about the tactical wheelbarrow to haul it all in?
