How many of you carry full size guns daily? And how do you do it?

FUNINSUN... "Why do you big guys carry, anyway?"

Back when I was young and crazy, I used to rodeo. (I'm not young, anymore.) There was a very valid saying then, that's just as valid today.

"There never was a horse that couldn't be rode, and there never was a cowboy that couldn't be throwed."

Same as with fighting the bad guys. No matter how big and tough you are, there's always someone down the rode who's bigger and tougher.

Or, as the Col. (Colt, that is) said , "Be not afraid of any man, no matter what his size; take me in your good right hand, and I will equalize."

Works for me. J.B.

Jay Baker,

Those are indeed wise words Sir. Once at a bar I saw a little guy, about 5.3 but sinewy like a piece of beef jerky, beat the pulp out of a huge muscular fellow that must've weighed about 230. Jerky Boy moved fast and hit all the right places.

So many pistols, so little money.

Sounds like there is a majority of BIG guys carrying big guns on this thread. Maybe they conceal easier on a larger frame.?.?.?...

One thing I'd like to know that maybe some can comment on is this.....Have any of you compared concealment/comfort of a shoulder holster over T, but under button up shirt to similar carry with a belly band? Or does the belly band tend to work its way down from the weight? I'm thinking of trying a belly band up high suspended w/short suspenders.....don't laugh........I know that It'll look like a.............a bra.....And NO, I'm not having gender issues......

However I AM glad that nobody but me and the critters will see it.

I have carried a Glock 21 in crotch carry before.

I'm 5'6". I weighed about 140 at the time, I think. I was also at a job where I stayed on my feet all day. Bending over was uncomfortable! :D

I don't use crotch carry anymore, because of draw speed, and I'm usually desk-bound, now. I only carry full-size platforms when I'm wearing jackets, now, or in the woods.

The Subcompacts from Glock can be difficult to fit in large hands, thus making them unconfortable to shoot. Move up to the Compacts like the 19, 23, or 30. The medium size frames are a happy compromise between the two.

If you really are set on carrying a full-size, then consider a well made IWB or Fanny Pack. Remember the total weight of the gun, 2 mags and ammo for daily carry. When you add it up on a daily basis it either gets old or you get hard.

Whatever you choose, it must be something you are comfortable and proficient with. Don't worry, if its not you will eventually work towards something that is. Evolution has a funny way of weeding things out.

When I carry my full size 1911, I do so in the small of the back. Works real well. I have carried in my vm2 and it works well, although not as well as my ultra elite or officer.

I carry my Beretta Brigadier in a Bianchi IWB open top holster. I am 6'1", 300 lbs. Never has been a problem, but would like suggestions of different holsters. Mine works, but I think I would like an IWB with a thumb break. Mike

Jay, so true. Speaking from personal experience, it was always the guys my size that gave me a run for my money, the bigger guys just fell alot harder (LOL). Course I was young and STUPID then and you didn't go to jail for a fist fight.

I carry a 1991A1 GM, 1 spare mag and a Surefire 6Z in a Rosen ARG/SOS/belt combo. Very comfy all day long. I'm 6', 185#, and wear a Concealed Carry Clothiers Tropical weight vest, or else wear a t-shirt with an unbuttoned shirt over it. I live in SC, so it can get plenty hot & humid here, too. No problems, except I have to remember to wipe my gun down at the end of a particularly hot day when I've sweat a lot.

I'm 6' 6" and weigh about 205 which is heavy for me. My racing (bicyle road) weight is around 190 (5% body fat). Everything prints on me, I have to be real careful. I've found that the FBI cant in a holster does help to prevent printing in a larger handgun. I really don't like the FBI cant, prefering a straight drop, but for concealed carry I need it.

has neone tried the thunderweat concealment holsters??? www.thunderwear.com i'm 5'8 and 160lbs. I have a HK USP 40 but planning to get a P229 since i thought i coudlnt carry my USP...dunno if thunderwear holster can help...

6-4, 195. Lightweight .45 Commander on a daily basis. Belt slide or Sparks Summer Special under suit, light sport jacket or vest. My problem is more with weight of the pistol dragging down my pants than of pistol size. I have very flat hips, and even with a good belt, it is hard to keep the belt/holster/single mag pouch assembly up where it belongs without wearing substantial suspenders.

Alternative carries, infrequent--
T-shirt with loose, unbuttoned shirt over it, or a guyabera. Pistol is usually just Mexican carry under these, in waistband without holster, butt to the front for a "cavalry draw."

I sometimes switch to a Lightweight Officers ACP, usually in a Kramer T-shirt rig with spare mag in off side holster.

No, I'm not a hobbyist with this variety of styles. I've carried a pistol daily for over 30 years, while in the USA. The main thing is to get comfortable with your mode of carry, and LEAVE IT ALONE. A lot more people get "burned" because of adjusting the holster or clothing than because someone sees the bulge.

Best regards,
Johnny

I carry my full size G22 in a Rosen Belt slide (strong side) with no problems of it showing wearing an untucked tshirt in the summer or a sweatshirt in the winter

and am 6'1" 235. One of my best freinds is 6'5 and goes about 297, he hides a full size Desert Eagle in 50 cal with no problems (why I have no clue but he does)

Tamaoduh,

Seeing as how I have spent the better part of my waking moments keeping things from pointing ....hmmm lets say south....I dont think I will ever be brave enuff to point a loaded gun straight "south" all day long....eventually murphys law will catch up with you.....I have however used a pagerpal and it works well provided you put the right gun in it.

just my 2 cents.....

Normal no-expected-threat carry has my full-size (1911, EAA Witness, GP100) in a shoulder bag.

'Bad-day' carry has one of the above on my strong side (1911 IWB, others on the belt) or a 5.5" Redhawk in a strong-side Sparks HSR.

'Always' gun pocket carry (need for speed!)

i started carry legal CCW with a S&W 4006. i packed it in a Kramer vertical belt scabbard with a double spare mag pouch on the same belt. i found that i had to wear a garment over the top of this rig which ment the HOT N.C. summers were tough. i bought a Sig 229 because of it's reduced weight and rep for accuracy and reliability. i packed it in a Kramer IWB holster and a single spare mag pouch on a Kramer horsehide belt. this was my carry rig for two years. i found summer carry still difficult and i felt like a girl in a mini dress, i was always tugging at my shirt tail to be sure my "goodies" were covered up. plus bending over at the waist was a no-no. at the advise of a friend i purchased an A-75 Astra (highly underated pistol) in .40 auto and high ride IWB holster from Don Hume. in competition i could shoot the A-75 every bit as well as the 229 Sig. the only issue was capacity and i have never thought the world revolved around that issue anyway. i also found it was extremely easy to conceal. it was thin and light and had a shorter grip than the brick-like 229 or 4006.
nowdays the outcome of that early research is a Kahr K40 that rides in a Wilson Covert Companion (high ride IWB). it conceals under a XXXL t-shirt or an untucked polo shirt and shoots just as well as any full size. it is accurate and never malfunctions. add that to the fact it is as small as any .380 was 10 years ago and i wonder why would i carry a full size in hot weather.
i must admit that when the weather turns cold i love to get out my Galco shoulder holster or my Bladetech IWB holsters and carry my 229 or 4006 for a while. works good to until i have to spend an hour or two in a hot store wipeing sweat because i can not take off my jacket. then i am back wearing my Kahr again.
oh yes i am 5'10" and tip the scales at 250+ pounds. size means very little to me because fat don't cover your pistol. LOL
