How many mags?

2 or 3 is a good number. If you plan on getting more, I would recommend only going wild on your favorite handgun and in case you part with it some day, try to make it one that has mags compatible with other handguns.

why do you have some you want to sell?

i have at least 3 for each pistol
i have 8 for my bullseye gun, saves reloading at the range
i have 5 for my wife' P226 one of thoose is a 30 rounder

after you have enough mag tubes i think a supply of mag springs is a better investment as they go bad after extended use. i am currently buying extra plus power springs for all my mags and followers as money allows. recoil springs and other breakable spare parts are a good buy also. you never know when guns and parts will dry up.

4 or 5 for the BHP.

3 for the AMT .45 Backup.

10 or 15 for the M-1 carbine.

100 for the FAL.

30 or so for the 1911's.

The only pistol I have is a Ruger MK512. It comes with two magazines and that is what I have.

For the revolvers, I have 14 clips (8x14 rounds) for the PC 627 V-Comp and 13 clips (7x13 rounds) for the 686+. I use the 627 for IPSC and ICORE competition and the 686+ is fun and backup.

IMO you should have double what you think you'll need. This is because you can rotate mags if you want, and to have spares in case a mag gets damaged. If they're hicaps I would get some ten rounders to use for practice/at the range once you know the hi-caps are reliable....

Well...when it was rumored that Colt might buy HK, I bought 15 NIB P7M8 magazines. I also have a bunch of extra strength Wolff magazine springs. This is overkill. The supply will probably outlast my grandchildren but I'd rather have them and not need them than vice versa. For my other pistols, I have three or four magazines each.

Minimum 3 per pistol but you can never have too many. I think I have over 30 mags for my various 1911 Government model pistol.

I tend to gravitate to 5 hi-caps for the guns that take them, plus 4 or 5 10-rounders. Lower-capacity guns, about 5 each, except for the really small ones. (Why do mags for pocket guns like the Beretta Tomcat and the Kahr MK9 cost so damn much?)

Some of the hi-caps I've put away while brand new, for possible sales/trades later. I have about 9 hi-caps for the Beretta 92, because I got a great deal on some aftermarket ones (5 for $50) that have never failed once.

The hi-caps I use, I use at the range all the time though. I'm not going to pay all that money and not have a little fun with them. I don't drop them on the ground, though.

One of the main reasons I have a lot of mags is because I too like to load them at home rather than at the range, especially if it's very hot or cold outside.

By the way, Brownells carries these great nylon pouches with velcro closures for storing mags and bringing them to the range. They come in 4-, 6-, and 8-mag sizes (assuming double stack mags; they hold twice as many single stacks), in 140mm and 170mm lengths, and in lots of different colors. Pretty cheap, too, with the trade discount. I bought a bunch of them in different colors, and now I can just throw the ones I need into my range bag. It's also easier to keep track of specific mags, like the malfunctioning ones.

I haven't really found a "limit" on the number of mags as yet. I get as many as I can for each pistol. It's tougher with the full-capacity mags (Glock mags...).

I think ten is a nice round number, but 3-5 is more realistic.

I agree with those who put the minimum at 3. That's one in it and two for backup. If you have less than that, I recommend that you fix it, soon.

I guess based on that mindset, 6 would be a good number. That would give you two complete "sets" for each gun.

Time to head to the gun shop!

I have five for my for my SA 1911. Three are 7rnd'rs from the factory and I now have 2 #47D's from Wilson combat. These are plenty good for tourneys, defense and CC. Like most have espoused, one 47D is sleeping while the other is in the gun and ready to defend. One standard is loaded and ready to back up the 47D while the other two stand by the sideline watching and waiting.

I plan on getting a few more 47D's when the money is there. They are great mags.

Of course, when that 22/45 shows up, I'll have to get a couple (read: 12) mags for it. And that nasty .22 conversion for my 1911 will undoubtedly require a bunch of mags. Guns sure can by trying, can't they?!

When Reason Fails.....

I usually have 4 per gun, and if, at a later time, I can find a good deal I would probably buy a few more... Typically, I only keep 2 loaded at any given time for a gun I plan on using...

There are many valid reasons to have at least one spare magazine for auto pistols and such. A speed loader or Bianchi Speedstrip is also a wise (though not as necessary) purchase for a revolver. More is always better, right? But there are fewer reasons to own more. I agree with many others that three correct factory magazines in perfect working order is a realistic minimum for most needs. I would prefer at least six, however, for a primary defensive pistol. In part because I like the idea of having two "identical" defense guns. Therefore, I would have two sets of three mags, one set for each weapon.

I like many others have a minimum of three per up to a dozen plus for 1911s.
Unfortunately mags don't seem to hold their value when the gun is sold or traded. I still rummage through every mag selection I see though looking for more. :)

Require minimum 12 for hi-cap pistols (but ended up with 6, 8, and 14), and AT LEAST 7 reliable mags for my 1911.

Have 14 .357 speedloaders, 3 in .41, and 10 for my 44.
