While I don't have 400 handguns, I'm past 10.

I indicated 9, but when I started writing it out it turned out to be 12.

.22 LR, .38 Special, .357 Magnum, .40 S&W, 10MM Auto, .44 Special, .44 Magnum, .44-40, .45 ACP, .45 Colt and ,454 Casull.

God, I love variety.:)

P.S. If we add percussion, I need to mention .31, .36 and .44 (which is really a .452).

And after all of that I forgot .41 Magnum.:)

Well, since .357, .38 and 9mm are the same caliber and .44 special and .44 mag are the same caliber, and .45 LC and 45 ACP are the same caliber...

I have:

.22 cal
.32 cal
.357 cal
.40 cal
.41 cal
.44 cal
.45 cal

Within those calibers there's 11 chamberings.

After reading through the previous posts I feel oh so common...

Four for me:

.38
.357
9mm
.45

I still would like a handgun in one of the various .32s, and .357SIG. I'm OK with 6 or 7 different calibers.

The issue raised by Amendtwo as to how to vote; I listed 9 calibers and 14 cartridges.

I need the OP to define "maintain" as well as how the OP defines "calibers" so I can vote in the poll..

.22 Long Rifle
.355 - .356 (.380acp, 9x19mm)
.357 (38 spl, .357 mag.)
.386 (41 long Colt)
.400 (40S&W, 10mm auto)
.410 (.41 mag)
.429 (44 spl, 44 mag.)
.452 (45ACP)
.454 (45 Colt, 454 Casull)

Don't have 400 handguns...yet

maybe never. But I'm nearly 10% of the way there!:D

Lost track after 12 calibers, and some multiple cartridges within calibers.

Currently 8 .. I think.

I've owned others in the past in other calibers though that I just don't have any of right now.

3 ~ .22lr, .38sp, and 9mm

I'd be just as satisfied with 2 ~ .22lr and 9mm. One light round, one intermediate round. When I want recoil, I have a 12-gauge and some slugs.

How Many Calibers

If you are not handloading then just concentrate on one.
Yes, .22LR is great for cheap trigger time. But for SD/HD stick to one pistol and caliber. Buy as much as you can find or afford.
These of course are just my opinions.

22 lr
22 mag
25 ACP

7.62X25

38 Super
38 Special
357 Mag

38-40
10MM
44 Special
44 Mag
45 ACP
45 Colt
according to my count thats 16 but I'm no where near 400 guns so no option in poll fits.

I voted for 4, but it's really 3. The 7.62x25 doesn't really count.

Hi Folks,

I need the OP to define "maintain" as well as how the OP defines "calibers" so I can vote in the poll..

I meant cartridges...

I guess the issue of "maintain" really is at the heart of this thread. I think that the definition will be different for different folks. For example, I like to keep at least 6 months worth of ammo for all the gun calibers I shoot. I personally, prefer a smaller amount of shooters to larger amount of "examples". To that, when I wrote this poll, I had just decided to remove the 9mm cartridge from my collection by getting rid of my only 9mm gun, which I don't shoot much.

BTW, you folks don't have to have 400 guns to vote for the >10 option. Like the calibers thingy, I meant "I have a lot of guns and have know idea how many different cartridges I would need to fire all of my handguns".
