How do you pronounce "Walther?"

Here in the US....

It would be Wall ther

You hear someone from Germany calling it Valter (here in the US) you'd say, "excuse me, do you mean Walther?" :D
 
Just to get a bit more picayune about the Deutsches pronunciation, a German would say "Valtuh" (and that last syllable is actually an unaccented schwah,) since the final "r" is not a hard consonant.

Gee, I feel better.
 
Romance language speakers would say...

Ironically enough, if you take a course in Chaucer, you'll find that Middle English was very similar to German in both syntax and word construction.

Valter would be it, as many people have said.

"Valter" would be correct, though it would confuse most people.

Also, to judge from my daily experience with the general public, Sig Sauer is pronounced "Sig Sawyer" and Smith & Western makes a great revolver.

I'm German, which is also my "first" or "native" language.

In German, "Walther" is pronounced just like the name "Walter."
The "H" in "Walther" is a "silent" one. :D

I would have assumed the fully German pronunciation would be "Valter", not "Walter" (W pronounced like a V as someone else has mentioned), while the anglicized pronunciation would be "WaltHer". "Walter" sounds like a half-Anglo/half-German version. But then I only had a year of German. :D
 
Mein Gott! Ja, ich spreche auch Deutsch, but since it's a mostly English speaking forum (though now I'm not sure anymore...) I'll stick to English. I did 4 years in High School and two classes at the 300 level in college. I've been over a few times as well.
So, I hadn't been on the forum in a while and this thread reminds me of one of those alternate reality novels where the Germans won the war. Interesting.

Oh, and yeah, Valter or valtuh would be my pronunciation. But I usually say walter. Just like I say Sig Sour or just HK. If I do the full on accent, people won't know what the heck I'm talking about. Or I'll sound a bit pretentious.

I guess the real answer is "how did Carl Walther pronounce his name?" I know the (smart aleck) answer ...Karl. :D
