How do *you* pronounce "Walther?"

If I am in Germany, I'll figure out a way to get a German to say it first. If I feel like I'm going to slaughter it, I'll say so ahead of time.

If I'm in Laramie, Cheyenne, or Grand Junction, it'll be Walther, just like its spelled, guaranteed.
 
Niklaus Wirth, the Swiss computer programming language designer (author of Pascal, Modula, Oberon, etc.), once remarked that Europeans pronounced his name "Nik-lows Virt", while Americans said something like "Nickle's worth".

He said European's called him by name, Americans by value.

(Which joke is going to pass over the head of anybody who is unfamilar with programming languages and compiler design, but WTH ;)

The correct german pronunciation of WALTHER is "Vahl-ter".

By the way, aquapong is absolutly right!

You can pronounce Walther just as you like, as long as you're buying a LOT of our P99's! :D :D :D

@ VVG: NOBODY in Germany, Austria and Switzerland Pronounces a SIG SAUER "TSIG TSAUER".
Not even the most simple-minded redneck yokel from SOUTHERN Bavaria. It's just "ZIG ZAUER"

And CZ (Ceska Zbrojovka) is pronounced (in Czech) Tzhaskah Zbroiofkah.

@ BigG: Hah-Kah is absolutly correct!

And before anybody asks THAT question: Vihtavuori is pronounced (in finnish): vij- (the "j" is pronounced like the spanish "j" in "cojones") tah-vuh-oh-rih.

I'm with Genesius. When in the company of those educated in firearms I say valter, otherwise walt-her. Same with Leupold, if you say Loopold around someone who knows enough about guns to be dangerous they think it's pronounced like Aldo's last name Leeyou-pold. When I was young I thought the people were uneducated rednecks who said Loopold. Turns out, they were saying it right, but it was accidental. They were, and still are uneducated rednecks who just happened to say it correctly because they spell and say most everything incorectly. I live in Mississipi and love the State dearly but that's the truth.

The correct pronunciation is "punch buggy (insert colour here)" haha


I am pretty sure that you can pronounce it however you like... just keep in mind the company you are in.

I know how to say Ruger, Remington, Mossberg and Browning... should be all I need for every rifle and shotgun I am looking at haha.
 
And there's the definitive answer to the OP's question, for all the pronunciation fanatics out there.

That said, this thread is so dead that it doesn't even smell any more... it's a sad, dessicated corpse, and there's no reason to exhume it.
